alerts not working on 1 sub site
Hi,
I am finding the user alerts are not working on one site in my sharepoint
site. They work great on the parent site and other sites that I create, and
used to work on this sub site but have suddenly stopped working. When setting
up the alert you get the message to say it is set up but no actual alerts
come through.
Any one have any ideas? Tag: sharing outlook 2003 calendar and wss 3 Tag: 60528

Alerts for surveys
Hi,
We have WSS 3.0 configured with a survey that people are logging in and
using.
Upon completing the survey we would like an email sent out to the person who
completed the form, however we seem to be having some issues with this.
Firstly, we have set the permissions to allow people to only see their own
survey results, and now we can not set up any alerts.
Secondly, after changing the permissions to allow people to see all
responses (temporarily whilst we test the email functionality), the options
for the alert appears to notify you whenever anyone submits a survey.
Does anyone have anything similar set up or any ideas how we can achieve
this without having to allow people to view everyone elses survey results
and notify them when other people have submitted a survey response.
Thanks

IIS Web servers / SSL / Single Sign-On
Hi,
we have three servers (one with an dedicated Active Directory, one with
Windows Sharepoint Services + SQL 2005 and the last with Reporting
Services). The Windows Sharepoint Services is published on the Internet with
the URL https://portal.customer.org (the certifiate used comes from a root
authority installed on the dedicated domain controller). The homepage on the
Windows Sharepoint Services is composed of several webpart and especially
the reporting services webpart. As this webpart is displayed through an
IFRAME, we had to publish the reporting services web server on the internet
too (so we have https://bi.customer.org). The result is not very good as
when a customer is accessing the Windows Sharepoint Services, he has to
authentificate two times (one time for the https://portal.customer.org and
another time for getting access to https://bi.customer.org). We added both
sites on the trusted sites zone but he has no effect. Of course, we didn't
had this problem when reporting services was installed with Windows
Sharepoint Services on the same server (as /Reports and /ReportServer was
accessed by https://portal.customer.org). However, we had to split the
services on two separate servers because we had some performances during the
cubes processing.
Is there a solution to bypass the second authentication request ? As we are
authenticated on the first server (https://portal.customer.org, why the
information is not returned to the second server (https://bi.customer.org)
as both servers are using the same Active Directory ? Is this because we are
using SSL (this could be a security feature to block the "automatic login
with current username and password" option in Internet Explorer when
browsing SSL web sites).
Very thanks for your answers.

need help restoring search databases
I moved my server and restored to a new one, all works but the
search. I am using WSS 3.0.
Someone on the board told me all I had to do was delete my search
databases, drop them from SQL, delete them, and restart the search
service to recreate them.
Problem is I dont know how to do all that SQL stuff so I can delete
them. They are in use and even if I stop services they are still in
use?
Second, will the search recreate the database after I delete them or
do I have to manually create a search database and re-add it to SQL?
And how if so?
Help please, thanks Tag: sharing outlook 2003 calendar and wss 3 Tag: 60508
ApplicationTemplateCore install
Hello,
In SharePoint Services 3.0 (which is working fine), I attempted to install
the ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp following the ReadMe file. When I got to
the point - stsadm -o deploysolution -name
ApplicationTemplateCore.wsp -alllowdeployment -immediate - I received the
following response;
The timer job for this operation has been created, but it will fail because
the administrative service for this server is not enabled. If the timer job
is scheduled to run at a later time, you can run the jobs all at once using
stsadm.exe -o execadmsvcjobs. To aoid this problem in the future, enable
the Windows SharePoint Services administrative service, or run your
operation throught the STSADM.exe command line utility.
My question is where do I go to start the Windows SharePoint Services
administrative service? I can not find it in the services console.

Moving site to new server
Hello,
we moved a site using Microsoft Sharepoint Services to an new server
(backup&restore) a few months ago. This worked very well and the
systems runs fine without any problems but one.
The notification-emails still point to the old server, so they contain
dead links only. I did not find any setting to change this, so I post
here.
Where/how do I change the baselink for the notificationemails from

Best Practices for Site Governence
Does anyone have any recommendations on best practices for site
governance? I am looking for things like:
- how many site collection owners should there be? at least two? No
more than ????
- What is the recommended number of sites one individual should be
the owner of
- How should I keep track of permissions on my site if I allow custom
permissions on everything - sites, subsites, webparts, documents, etc.
- Should everyone be able to create groups?
- Should the # of groups allowed to be created be limited for a site
collection?
- Should groups be used all the time? If not when is it better to
give users the permission individually
- etc.
I am rolling WSS 3.0 out on an enterprise level and am trying to
gather some information on what has worked for others. I have my
thoughts on these issues and others but was hoping to hear what rules
and guidelines others have used when giving access to lots of users.

WSS 3.0/MOSS with SSRS 2005 Installation Issue
Hello,
In the past, I had installed SSRS 2005 prior to Service Pack 2 by setting up
SQL Server, not configuring SSRS, installing SharePoint, adding two excluded
managed paths for /reports and /reportserver, and then configuring SSRS.
With the introduction of SSRS SharePoint integration mode, I don't know if
this is still the preferred method.
However, in my most recent installation, this managed path exclusion was not
done and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 was installed, which seemed
to work correctly until rebooted and now all IIS sites only report "Service
Unavailable."
Can you please provide me some pointers of how to recover this situation and
the best practices to follow for this scenario in the future (ex. use SSRS
SharePoint integration mode or not)?
Thanks for your assistance with this issue.

Design Question - Linking to Documents in Libraries Across Sites
I have a site with subsites - all in one site collection. I have a couple
document libraris in the master site from which I would like to link
documents in the subsites. I'd rather not use a standard URL link. Something
like the Content Query Web Editor web part might work - except it's limited
in its ability to select groups of files without tapping into metadata of
those files.

MOSS 2007 + Forefront=Broken E-mail Enabled Libraries?
As soon as I install Microsoft Frontend Security for Sharepoint on my Sharepoint
2007 config (which works fine) mail enabled libaries stop working with the
error:
"OWSTIMER.EXE (0x0950)
Windows SharePoint Services
E-Mail
6874
Warning An error occurred while attempting to create an attachment for an
item sent via e-mail. "
I have looked all over the web and nobody seems to be able to get this working,
there are a few workaround but they then cause more problems. I can find
no patch to fix the issue.
In my opinion this means that this product is broken, e-mail enabled libaries
are a key feature of MOSS 2007 for Forefront to break them as soon as it
is installed is annoying. As soon as I remove Forefront Security for Sharepoint
everything works again.
As I'm stuck with Forefront (already bought) and the Forefront CAL's is there
any way to make it work with e-mail enabled libaries?

replace title field in Gantt view
Hi,
I am using a custom made (lookup) field throughout my site. I would like to

Need help with site re-organizaton
I have a WSS 3.0 site with about 10 main sites that match to
departments in the company, Development, Federal Sales, Commerical
Sales, Backoffce, IT, etc, etc. Many of the sites have sub-sites
like Backoffice has accounting, hr, benefits, etc. All have unique
permissions and not inherited from parent so we can control exactly
who can see what.
We just re-org and now I am being asked if I can put some of those
site under a new highlevel site called Operations. So I need to move
backoffice, it, pmo, under Operations.
Any easy way to do this?
Manually I could recreate and move the shared documents easy. I have
no idea if I can move things like tasks, lists, links, discussions,
etc.

MI5 Persecution: Stasi 21/4/96 (16179)
Subject: Chief Constable Alderson Condemns "Stasi" MI5
Newsgroups:uk.misc,uk.politics,uk.media,uk.legal,soc.culture.british
Organization: Toronto Free-Net
Summary:
Keywords:
John Alderson, former Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall, had the
following to say about the expansion of the Security Service's powers, in
a recent magazine article;
"It is fatal to let the secret service into the area of ordinary crime.
MI5 is not under the same restraints as the police. They infiltrate
organisations, people's jobs and lives. They operate almost like a cancer."
"At the moment the acorn of a Stasi [the former East German communists'
secret service] has been planted. It is there for future governments to
build on."
The message is clear. Criminal subversion and criminal harassment by an
unpoliced minority not subject to the law, "infiltration of people's jobs
and lives" is with us today.

This in itself dos not suggest that the police have it in for you.
The old bill operates on extremely tight spending limits forced on
them by that pillock Michael Howard, and without evidence, they
often have higher priorities than chasing something that cannot go
to court.
I doubt that the police are actually being leant on, but they probably
realise that if they looked into this, they would be leant on hard.
The met always stays away from anything that looks like it has Defence,
Security or secret service interest already, because they realise that
they are below these government agencies in the general pecking order.
This attitude was made clear in a TV show where a left wing comedian
heckled some aristocratic Tory candidate in a local election. The
police officer gave the comic a ticking off, even though you could see
that this young copper sympathised with the comedian, and regarded
the Tory as an upper-crust wanker. He said, and I quote "I'm giving you
the ticking off and not him because he's a Lord and I'm a Police Constable."
If I walked into my local nick and complained that MI5 were snooping on me,
they would show me the door without even looking at my evidence, because
that bored desk seargant with only five years to go before he retires
doesn't want to start fucking about with somebody who has incurred the
wrath of Stella Rimington. He would rather deal with the lost dogs and
driving licence producers, eat his cheese and pickle sandwiches and piss
off home at the end of his shift than have some high ranking spook having
a go at his boss and getting him a bollocking.
In short, you have earned much sympathy but little surprise. Just remember
that saying about the enemy of your enemies.
Have a nice day.

I think the police know well what's going on. It is up to them to do
something about it. They know I've made a complaint at a police station.
I could probably do more to try to help myself (I think someone suggested
making a written complaint to the chief constable) but even then I nthink
they would not take action.

So we have a situation where the security service breaks the law,
everyone knows MI5 breaks the law, and the police won't investigate
crimes that would otherwise earn a jail sentence.
Oh good, I'm really glad the UK is a democracy. (<sarcasm>, for those of
you who didn't catch that)

In this case I think it is 'high-ranking' police officers who are aware
of the persecution, they know a complaint has been made, and they're
doing nothing. What is more, I don't think there is anything I can do
that would make them take action, both because they may be being 'leant
on' and through the wider view that it could be deleterious to the state
to have a persecution by state organs exposed.
They're wrong in taking that point of view, because sooner or later this
will all out anyway, and they it will be n years of police inaction
(n>=6) that will be questioned.

I think there are two reasons nobody has taken physical action as opposed
to verbal;
a) A lot of people "know". Perhaps you the reader might not know, but
lots of people in the media etc do. Remember, I was born in the UK and
lived there until a couple of years ago. I don't think these people would
condone state-sponsored murder of someone who might be seen on a good day
as one of their own.
b) Rather than doind anything directly, they're going for spying, verbal
harassment, media harassment, every form of persecution short of the
physical. Because as soon as anything turns physical, the police become
involved; and unless it turns physical, the police can shrug and say 'not
our problem'.
So they persecute you and try to get you to react, either by hitting one
of them (in which case I clearly find myself in the wrong as far as the
police are concerned), or by trying to harm myself (in which case they
can pretend they weren't responsible).
It's a pretty unproductive form of harassment actually, because if you
don't react then they're wasting they're time. Or perhaps they're just
cheap bullies and trying to wreck someone's life, without any ulterior
motive?

This weekend. The result, Mike Corley will be gratified to hear,
was that all users of the college system were prevented from
using email.
I suspect that there is no stopping Mike Corley. If mail is
automatically returned to him, he will return it back to you
tenfold. If he is thrown off his account, as he surely will be,
he will find another one.
I do not care whether Mike Corley has an email account or not. It
is a matter of supreme indifference to me whether his fanciful
account of persecution is aired or not. If he thinks that he has
been persecuted by M15 and Chris Tarrant, then that is a matter
for him. But there is a world of difference between repeatedly
spamming usenet - which is unacceptable - and setting up a Web
Site containing his post, which is entirely acceptable. Then it
will be possible to choose whether or not to partake of his
fantasy.
However although I would not like to see the censorship of posts
because they demonstrate evidence of mental illness, I suspect
that Mike Corley will inevitably be censored by his ISP following
a number of complaints of usenet abuse and mailbombing.

But I can't, you see then I wouldn't know how things would turn out
("we're only doing this because we don't know how it's all going to end"
- logic error in line 100)
>There is no-one in the known Universe who hasn't read this at least 5 times.
It doesn't seem to have done a whole lot of good since the good old
persecution stuff is still going on. Over Christmas I was flying BA and
got hassled by a couple of people on the flight (sounds like something
you've heard before, doesn't it?). All the usual stuff about the town I'd
been staying, "he doesn't know who we are", self-justification that we're
doing it because he's a "nutter" etc. Real friendly like. Also a fairly
obvious wind-up and attempt to get some reaction. I think they're trying
quite hard to get a reaction.
If I hit someone on a flight over the Atlantic, am I actually breaking
any laws, and if so whose? Is a BA aircraft British territory subject to
British laws while it's in mid-flight? It is really tempting to "reply"
and that's obviously what they want, so who am I to refuse a blow to the
head for people who ask for it so consistently?
