I have issue with Manage Profile Database page (XXXX Portal > Site Settings
Manage Profile Database). The following error appears on this page.

"The search service is unavailable or access was denied. Check that the
search service is configured properly and running. "

I have SharePoint Portal Server 2003 with 2 top level sites. The search
seems to be working fine for top level sites, but not for the Portal and
People. I know, I had some issues with resetting content password and if that
is the case then I'm not sure what needs to be done to fix this issue. Also I
could see following warning message in event viewer.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Microsoft SharePointPS Search Service
Event Category: Gatherer
Event ID: 3036
Date: 12/12/2005
Time: 9:30:00 AM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description:
The content source <sps://xxxxportal.com/site$$$people> cannot be accessed.

Context: http://ncmcportal.com/ Application, Portal_Content Catalog

Details:
The specified address was excluded from the index. The site path rules may
have to be modified to include this address. (0x80040d07)

Hi.

The SPS Search routine doesn't work with standalone WSS sites.

The people who will know about it will be in the SPS newsgroup at
microsoft.puböic.sharepoint.portalserver

The WSS search routine - if used in SPS - covers only single sites in the
WSS part of SPS and thus NOT "Portal and People".

Another reason to ask in the SPS newsgroup.
