I installed Adobe's IFilter for indexing PDF files and I'm now able to
index accordingly. I've also added/linked the PDF gif in order to
easily distinguish it from other file types. However, when I search
for PDF files, the icon that appears in the results is that of IE. Is
there a way for it to show the proper icon? All others (Excel, Word,
etc...) shows the icon properly but not PDF.

I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks!

Can you run through how you added/linked the pdf gif?

I adapted the steps in the MS Support article 555209

Steps 1-4 are already covered by installing Ifilter60 and adding the
filetype to search as per this Blog entry
http://geekswithblogs.net/sspotts/archive/2006/11/03/96045.aspx.

5. Copied file from http://www.ceinet.org/back_office/images/icons/pdf16.gif
to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions
\12\TEMPLATE\IMAGES
and made a second copy called ICPDF.GIF (as needed by DOCICON.XML
file)

6. Edited C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML\DOCICON.XML
Added a line for pdf referring to icpdf.gif

7. Restarted every Sharepoint service.

Still the PDF doc appears with a default icon and opens in a text
view.
Hope someone can help clarify whether this should work.
Thanks!

Go here

http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/MS%20Articles/DispForm.aspx?ID=2

for a pdf icon

add it and specify it by following this

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;837849

(Guessing - you don't say which version of WSS you have ....)

Thanks Mike

Yes this MS article is much clearer. It turns out that I was unlucky
enough to have loaded a corrupt PDF as my trial file which is why it
opened as text.

Cheers
