When my readers view my SharePoint portal site the see the "Add new ..."
links (announcements, events, etc). They think they can add new items but
when they try to submit the changes they get an error.

Is there a way to remove these links for the Reader Site Group?

Short answer, No.

Everyone of whatever Site Group sees everything provided they can access the
site / sub-site / doc lib.

Only after they click something they aren't allowed to do are they asked for
a name / password and then because that name/passsword doesn't have
sufficient rights, rejected.

That's the way WSS works unfortuantely. (Just like it's predecessor STS)
