Hi

I have various files uploaded in General Documents folder. If a file is an
Office file (doc, xls, etc.), Office lauches the app and tries to open the
document. When this happens, a prompt pops up asking for user name and
password.
-How can I get these documents to open without being prompt for password
?

My workaround right now is to advise users to right-click on the documents
and click on Save Target As.

Please help.
Thanks
Steve

You can instruct your users to add your intranet to their trusted sites
list. Is it external facing with HTTPS?

It's external site but not HTTPS. It's just a site with anonymous access;
that is, anyone can access it (just as a public site). When I upload a file
to General Documents folder, then security screen asking for
username/password (which is fine); that's the way it should be, only our
staff can upload files. But, for public users to open a file and having to
deal with security screen, I think this is unnecessary and may be changed to
present a more user-friendly access.

even public users can add a site to their list of Trusted sites, so the
solution given earlier needs only to be amended by the removal of the word
"intranet" and its replacement with "your site".

Thanks for your message.

Ok, first of all, the site that we have is not an intranet. As far as I
know, it is just like any public sites out there. The only thing is ... it
is created using Sharepoint.

Now, regarding the solution given, I tried and there is no difference. When
user clicks on a file, the password screen pops up, and I click on Cancel 2
times for it to go away. Then the file takes about 5-10 seconds to open up
in Word (assuming it was a doc file). When the file opens in Word, the
Password prompt appears again, and I have to click Cancel 5 more times for
the prompt to go away. That's not the end of it. When Word is closed, the
Password prompt pops up again, and I click only one time for it to go away
and closes Word.

So, yes, people can get to a document, but there is a series of this
password popups - which is not user-friendly at all.

Thanks for the tip; however, I don't think this article applies to our
problem.

I followed the instructions and found that the Basic Authentication checkbox
has already been cleared as well as the Integrated Windows Authentication
checkbox has already been checked. I supposed these settings are default
when that web was created.

Please let me know if I should check something else.

Thanks again

I think your problem my be solved by following the resolution
instructions in the following link....

"When You Click a Link to an Office Document on a Windows SharePoint
Services Web Site, You Are Prompted for Authentication Many Times"

Thank you very much for the tip. I was very excited about this article that
you gave me as the symtom described in the article is exactly the symtom
that our site has.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for us. I couldn't be more disappointed (not
your fault, of course). I thought I had the solution after looking for it
for so long...it's such a puzzle.

Let me know if you have another idea.
Thank you
Steve

Guess what ? It works now. I came back after throwing in the towel
overnight; the problem solved. I supposed the server needed sometime to
refresh the changes. What I did after making the changes was to stop and
start the website in IIS. Since nothing worked, I gave up. Had I rebooted
the server, it would have worked right then and there.

In any case, it's all good now. Thanks a million.

Me again...this has been a strange roller coaster.

Our General Documents folder has both Word and Excel documents. When I
clicked on the different Word documents, they open straight away as expected
after the fix. That got me all excited.

Now, when I clicked a the Excel files, the password prompt came out. What
the ?

Well, I think I have enough of this for now. At least, we got somewhere.

Enjoy your day folks
