Hello,

Mike Walsh suggested, in an older reply, that you should open a doc or xls
file using the drop-down list and not just by clicking on the title showing
in a shared document library (WSS). That's fine and how I've been doing it
all along. But someone here wants an explanation as to why just a click on
the link, which opens the doc xls in IE, can't then be edited and saved back
to WSS.

Anyone have a bit more input on this?

Thanks,
Rich

(I suspect I said a bit more - like using this to download to your hard disk
and edit there.)

When you just click on the document it's opened in read-only mode hence you
not being able to save back to where it came from (the site). You could use
Save As to save it to your hard disk (just as you can use Save As to save
any Read-only file) but not Save. [Using Save As takes longer than just
downloading to the harddisk from the web site as you need to wait for Word
to open]

Provided you have Office XP or Office 2003 installed on the client you can
use the "Edit in Word" function instead. This opens in a normal
non-read-only mode and the document can therefore be saved back to where it
was opened from i.e. to the site.

Mike,

I certainly didn't mean to imply that your original response was
insufficient. You have provided me (and others) with many fixes,
work-arounds and just general knowledge as I've read your replies to a
myriad of questions and concerns. Thank you for what you do here!

I appreciate the clarification on the "opening" of doc or xls files from
WSS. I guess I had naturally been using what appeared to be the best method
of editing "on-line" documents and just never gave much thought to the title
link and how it opened a document.

Thank you for the info.

Rich

I wasn't upset if that's what you thought. I was just trying to avoid
someone else coming in and wasting their time correcting "me".

All my (new) text is an assumption but until someone comes in and says it's
rubbish then I'll assume that it's as logical as I think it is :)
