The old Team Services clearly stated that a Sharepoint
CAL was not required for its use. I have been unable to
find the same clear statement for Windows Sharepoint
Services. Can someone confirm that Sharepoint CALs are
not required for the use of WSS? Thanks.

Hi,
WSS doesn't have CAL's but you may need Windows Server
CAL's.
See Supplemental Licensing Information for Windows
SharePoint Services
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licens
ing/sharepoint.mspx. An option it doesn't mention is for
ISP's who can use The Microsoft Services Provider License
Agreement (SPLA)

To add to Ian's reply.

You will need standard licensing for any of the other parts of your WSS
system.

i.e. you will need to license the Windows 2003 Server you use. You will also
need to license SQL Server 2K if you do not use the built-in WMSDE. However
the WSS part is totally free.

As for CALs it depends on the form of you licensing of the above two
products whether you need CALs (or have enterprise-wide pricing).

But the basic principle is to investigate the licensing requirements for
normal Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server systems - these will apply here
too.

And as always only Microsoft can tell you exactly what their licensing terms
are - we here can only point you in the general direction.

Finally if you try to save money by using the Web Edition of Win 2003 Server
for WSS, you won't because then you *will* need SQL Server 2K and this will
be running on an additional (probably Win 2K) server that you will also need
to license.
