Export error: no row at position 0
We have a WSS 3.0 team site that has moved from one server to another.
The site shows some weird behavior now -- for example it doesn't
automatically recognize default.aspx.
I thought I would export it before making changes to see if I could
fix, but I'm getting this error on stsadm -o export:

could it have gotten corrupted?

Upgrade WSS2 to WSS3 problem.
Hi,
Currently running a wss2 standalone server (w2k3 sp2, sql2005). When i
try to do an inplace upgrade to wss3 (keeping the existing sql 2005
installation), the process seems to work fine, but i'm left with a new
content database, instead of my old content database. I just have a
new team site, instead of all my existing sites. Anyone have any
advice on how to get the upgrade to work properly? Tag: issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade Tag: 65748
Approve/Reject doesn't work with 25+ columns
I have a three different SharePoint servers, with the exact same error
message.
Server A configuration
Windows 2003 Server w/SP2
SQL Server Enterprise 2005 (inplace upgrade from v2000)
WSS v3.0 (inplace upgrade from v2.0)
Server B configuration
Windows 2003 Server w/SP2
SQL Server Enterprise 2005 (inplace upgrade from v2000)
WSS v3.0 SP1 (inplace upgrade from v2.0)
Server C configuration
Windows 2003 Server w/SP2
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (Fresh Install)
WSS v3.0 SP1 (Fresh Install)
Here's my problem on each server, I have a Task List with 25+ Columns when I
turn on Approve/Reject (under versioning) I receive the generic error
0x80040E14. I thought the KB article MS has would resolve the issue, but he
database registers the correct WSS Version history. Just for grins I went
through the process of forcing the upgrade on the DB, but only to now
resolve. Again, remember all three servers have the same issue even the
fresh install server. If I remove the columns to under 25 I can use the
Approve/Reject versioning feature without the error.
I have a call into MS. Tag: issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade Tag: 65747
WSS v3: Making a site list available to children site
Hello,
It looks that a site list has a limited scope to its site only but not to
its parents nor children site. Is there anyway I can make a site list

Combine Task Lists
Is there any way in WSS3 to have a view of any tasks that have been assigned
to you, regardless of what Site they are in?
I can't see it, and to be frank although we have Outlook 2007 and can link
all the seperate list in, only having them combine in the To Do Pane is a
little restrictive, to say the least!

Documents locked for editing after check-in
We have several customers using WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 that have
encountered a situation where files are locked for editing to the
modified by user after the user checks the document back in.
1) User checks out document and edits
2) User checks document back in and closes Office application
3) User attempts to check document out again to make another edit
(immediately or hours later)
4) User receives message that the file is locked by themselves
The workaround that many customers have found is to ask an associate
to check out the file and check it back in again. Amazingly, even
though the first user receives a locked message, any other user with
edit rights is able to check the file out and check it back in. Once
this occurs, the original user can edit the file again.
Does this sound familiar to anyone and is there a workaround or a
fix?

Project Server 2007 Backup
Hi -
We have a Project Server 2007 installation (Project Web Access + Project
Server) and need to get some good backups going. We've found the article
that explains the usage of the stsadm tool, but we're unclear as to exactly
what needs to be run to ensure a full fidelity backup.
Running this command:
stsadm -o backup -directory \\BACKUPLOCATION -backupmethod full
seems to run through everything and create a good backup, but is this all we
need? The article explains how to backup:
1) Server farm (the command above)
2) Web application
3) Database
4) Site collection
Is backing up the full server farm getting everything, or do I need to go
down and backup any Web Applications, Databases, or Site Collections in
addition to the Server Farm?
Thanks.

smigrate restore error 6553678
have read a couple of posts about this to no avail as yet.
**Problem**:
Setting up new server, migrating windows sharepoint services 2.0 site
from old server to new server. did smigrate backup on old server,
moved backup file to new server.
set up new blank web site in inetmgr (IIS Manager), set host header
value to [servername]
expanded the virtual server using stsadm -o extendvs with ownerlogin
as [domain]\Administrator and owneremail as sysadmin(me) email address
then did smigrate.exe -r -w http://[servername]/ -f "C:\Path\To\Backup
\File.wfp"
get error 6553678 The Web server at "http://[serverame]/" does not
appear to have Windows SharePoint Services installed.
server in question is SBS2003 premium with all up-to-date service
packs. Logged in as [domain]\Administrator
**History**:
Had previous success when I used existing "Default Website" (had to
remove frontpage extensions first before expanding), without realising
this was used for server manager backup/monitoring screens - oops!
Re-installed "Company Intranet" and "Monitoring" from sbs2k3
installer, followed above methodology. worked fine (aside from bug
with calling new web site "sharepoint" resulting in error regarding
existing FP extensions when expanding the virtual server, even with
blank virtual server!).
Had to rename server (used gui method), DNS etc. seemed to update
fine, but restored sharepoint would not work (alas, can't remember
error), so removed site in inetmgr and started afresh as per above.
All entries in DNS and STSConfig database point to new server name

of a day on it and am tearing my hair out! Tag: issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade Tag: 65731
Sharepoint Services SSEE data folder contents
Hello,
Does anyone have a good resource or can tell me what the different
database files in the SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data folder
represent? I installed WSS 3.0 with default settings and am trying to
determine what is the standard environment vs how much is my content.
When I run catastrophic backups the backup size is only about 100
MB,while the WSS_content databases are much larger, so I'm looking for
some clarity. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks.

Helpdesk template - experts list
Can anyone tell me, what the experts list made for? The first idea is
to describe skills of IT employees and route SRs using predefined
keywords. This would be great but that it has a very strange feature -
inability to choose an expert from WSS users. What's the use of such
design? Can I extend the list item definition so that it contain WSS

issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade
My scenario is to upgrade Wss2.0 with WMSDE to Wss3.0 with SQL 2005 Express
(install upgrade).
If you ask the question why? I'm doing a NOTES migration and the only MS
tool that works well is "Microsoft Application Transporter 2006 For Lotus
Domino" and this is designed for Wss2. The later Transporter version tool
does not bring across the desired results..eg metadata.
I've tested these scenario of moving SP Designer and it works well on a
Wss3.0 platforms and hence the best option is to migration from NOTES to
Wss2.0 (SP2) and then to Wss3.0. Then using MS SharePoint Designer to move
to a MOSS Farm.
With the prescan, I have no issue in the logs, all looks well.
The install of Wss3.0 (upgrade) runs smoothly.
However when connecting to the previous sites that were on Wss2.0, I get
"unable to get global configuration data".
The Wss2.o install was a standard install, no customisation, etc. A vanilla
install.
I suspect that the issue is not being able to access the Database on SQL
Express. But from what angle. Installing Wss2.0 gives no options for the
WMSDE db.
How would you recommend to fix this. Any suggestions please.

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date
of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change
(so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than
important as important text changes ought to result in a major version
change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future
not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version
change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major
version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB
articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

SP1 upgrade Failed login
Upgraded to SP1 and seemed to go fine. When running Config wizard, fails

looking at the upgrade log we find error: cannot open database requested in

I have someone who deleted a task list in Sharepoint. I restored the

Presence Awareness with Lotus Sametime
Does anyone have information on using Lotus Sametime to provide
presence information to a Windows SharePoint Services (V3 or V2
Environment?)
I have Lotus Sametime Connect client (V3) running on my desktop, with
a Sametime Server on the network. Sametime connect is providing
Presence awareness status to Lotus Notes (as well as IM functionality)
Is there a plug-in or configuration steps to have Sametime provide
this status to SharePoint?

SQL Server Reporting Services
Hello Everybody,
I am presently working on a project which handles much larger amount
of data. The application demands extensive reporting from the
SharePoint data. I'd like to know how I can generate reports from the
SharePoint lists using Reporting Services.
The SharePoint 2007 is installed in Integrated Mode with SQL Server

Export Sharepoint list data to SQL Server 2005 database
Hello Everybody,
I am presently working on a project which handles much larger amount
of data. The architecture of the application demands extracting
records from the SharePoint (WSS 3.0) and insert into a SQL Server
2005 database. I need to run this job as daily basis. I am thinking of
using SSIS (SQL Server Integration Service) for this purpose. But I am
new to this technology and I'd like to know how effective this idea to
do the job.
I'd also like to know more about SharePoint's ability to handle huge
amount of data when it comes to Reporting.
Thank you,

Office SharePoint Server Search "service" stuck on server
I cannot stop nor start the service on the server. It is set to manual, and
it either says "starting" or "stopping" and I cannot change it. I am not
sure what is causing this, but it is making all kinds of issues on Sharepoint
sites. I cannot do a backup, I cannot create an indexer in order to create a
new SSP (which is what microsoft recommended I do, to fix the backup issue).
I am just stuck in limbo, and I do not know what to do.
Can anyone assist?

SharePoint address list and winmail.dat
Hello,
I have a somewhat (in my experience) obscure problem.
Let me first give all software versions:
Outlook 2003sp2
Exchange 2003 (sp unknown)
SharePoint Server 2007/SharePoint Services 3.0 (?)
My expertise is with Office applications: Word, Excel, Powerpoint,
Visio, Project and of course Outlook.
I have superficial knowledge of Exchange, other people administer it.
I have even less knowledge of SharePoint.
Our problem:
We have an address list in SharePoint.
This address list is added in Outlook.
When people send mails with attachment to receipients on this
SharePoint address list, they arrive as winmail.dat for non-Outlook
receipients. This is the dreaded RTF/TNEF problem. For normal
addresses, it is easy to fix: just configure the address to receive
mail in plain text format, not in Outlook RTF format.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=138053 and
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/decode.htm#ms-tnef (yes I
did my homework)
But the addresses in the SharePoint address list are read-only in
Outlook. It' snot possible to change them.
Since I only know Outlook, I'm a bit at a dead end. The person
administering SharePoint is willing to make changes, if I can tell
exactly what to do. Which I don't know. So that's why I am here.
Any suggestions?

Remote Client error
Hello,
after already investing some time into trying to solve this I am still
stuck:
Windows SharePoint services 3.0 (with installed Application Template Core
from the Microsoft site) hosted on Windows Server 2003 x64, database on a
separate SQL 2005 server. All machines in AD.
Users from local and remote sites are accessing the server with integrated
AD credentials mainly for basic functionality like team calendars.
Until last Friday all went well - and nothing did change at least on clients
and server as far as I know.
On Monday local users still did perform well - but remote users get an error
on loading the site stating errors on page like "_spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames
is undefined".
This leads to the fact, that they can perform one other action on that
loaded screen and then WSS does not perform any actions for them any more.
(Each other action click may lead to a crash or object expected message,
dependend from client configuration - IE6 or IE7).
Same user account works in the local site (in different subnets), but not
from locations connected via WAN any more.
No visible errors in the event logs.
In the meantime I installed Service Pack 1 and the post SP hotfix package -
no change of the behaviour.
If I copy the definition for spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames from the file OWS.JS
to CORE.JS, the error for this function appears no longer on the remote
machine. The same happens for ContextInfo, but this definition I found in
the Internet only. And now I stuck again with g_ViewIdToViewCounterMap.
I would tend to assume a broken SPS, but why in this case it works for the
same user as long as the computer is located in my LAN?
Would be great, if somebody has a hint.
Best greetings from Germany

User Information via XML
Greetings,
Does anyone know if there is a source to pull in information about a
user? I want to default some fields on a form and was planning to use
AJAX to lookup the information about the user, e.g. lwho their manager
is.
Something comparable to when you use "/_vti_bin/owssvr.dll?
Cmd=Display&List={xxxx-xxx-xxx}&XMLDATA=TRUE"
But to pull information about the user currently logged in, or even a
specified user.
Is this possible?
Thanks,

Hierachry, Templates, etc.
We have decided to use SharePoint 2007 for IT Network projects and I would
like to get an idea of the Hierarchy of the site, or sites. Get an idea of
how we can use this to our advantage. Also, just some general questions...
I want to list one of our projects and then be able to list the several
tasks it took to complete this. So, my question is this...
1. Is there a map that Microsoft publishes of the typical hierarchy of
SharePoint2007?
2. Will we need to create a seperate "site" for each project and go about it
that way?
3. How do I import templates into the 'Template Selection' of SharePoint?
4. Where can I get more templates?
Admittedly I need more practice designing the pages. However I hope someone
out there can lend a hand or a site with better How to's.
Thanks,

noob question about restore to new server
Hi,
ok this might sound dumb, but here goes.
i have created a test WSS3 site contaning a large amount of shared
docs on a virtual server on default database, and want to move/migrate/
backup and restore it to another server as live with sql 2005.
i have 2 sub sites on the team site, an IT and HR site with the HR
having a large shared document library with permissions levels set.
i used stsadm but couldnt restore it to the new server, but a restore
onto itself went fine. i also tried the inbuilt backup from the
central admin console, but that failed to restore as couldnt connect
to the database.
i tried to upgrade the the exist instance with SQL 2005, but refused
to allow it to install to the existing instance.
cheers

Can't open a list with Windows Explorer - WSS3.0
Firstly apologies if this has been dealt with - I couldn't see anything
posted.
I have just put two new laptops running Windows Vista Business Edition on to
my network and can no longer open a list with Windows Explorer - I get the
error 'Your client does not support opening this list with Windows
Explorer.'
A search points me to KB Article 923906 which states this can happen with
IE6 and a path > 100 characters; neither of which are the case here;
My site is WSS 3.0 with SP1
The laptops have Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition
Both systems are fully up to date with all critical and optional updates
from Windows Update
An older Windows XP machine with the same software works just fine
Any suggestions gratefully received

Admin authority but can't Send to Another Location or save a shared
Hello, I'm guessing this is a setup issue or a rights issue, but I've
been working on it way too long. I am listed as the System Account on
the WSS3.0 server, and I have site collection owner authority on all
the collections. Howerver, I clicked on a file in a shared documents
library (.xsn file) chose Send To Other Location. I typed in the
library path where I wanted to send it to, and it came up with a login
box. I entered my credentials, but it didn't seem to like them. So,
I tried the admin credentials to the server itself, and it comes up
with Unable to Connect to Server error.
I'm working on a similar issue with someone who wants to share a
OneNote file with others. He's in OneNote, follows the steps to
create a new shared workbook, enters the workspace name on the
SharePoint site, and he continues to get the same error. Unable to
connect.
I've looked at things like the blocked extensions, and user policies,
but I'm not sure what would prevent any of these actions. Does anyone
have ideas for me to try? Tag: issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade Tag: 65644
Help converting lists to features and retaining existing content
We have a Sharepoint 2007 installation that was upgraded a few months
back from 2003. We have a custom site definition (onet.xml, and
several schema.xml) that is used for about 900 sites. The site def has
several custom document library lists, a contacts list, and an image
gallery. The lists are currently as they were in 2003, i.e. existing
not as features, but as defined in the schema.xml in the folders
\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\[companysite]\LISTS\[listname]. Going
through all the documentation that I have found, it doesn't look too
tricky to convert these lists to features. However, building the
Onet.xml and the webtemp.xml correctly is looking daunting, and I am
not entirely sure of the process. I am especially concerned about how
to get the existing content over to the new feature-based site
defintions. How is this done? Do I need to use the Contnent Migration
API or something? Obviously I don't have a clear picture of the
process!
Thanks for any help in clarifying this process for me.

Newbie question - dev box
Newbie question ... just ordered ms-SD 2007 and awaiting it's arrival....
Do I create new webs on my PC (where ?) and do I need to install/start any

Can't Upload in IE on WSS 3.0
We have an external WSS 3.0 site where users are supposed to be
uploading various documents. In testing, users seem to be having
problems in uploading when using IE. I tested myself from an external
connection. When I try uploading a 15mb rtf file with IE 7, it waits
for a while then tells me I'm no longer connected. When I try using
Firefox, it works just fine. I've followed the kb article on how to
allow large file uploads by adjusting the timeout in IIS, update the
_layouts/web.config and the web.config of the web application but it
makes no difference.
Has anyone run into such a problem or have suggestions on what else to
look at? It almost seems like an issue with IE since it works fine in
Firefox, but I can't find any settings in IE that make any
difference.
Any help would be appreciated. Tag: issue relating to Wss2 to Wss3 upgrade Tag: 65627
Write error on file "_themes/Obsidian"
I have currently done an upgrade on my sharepoint farm from 2003 to

functionality. After the upgrade, myself and my users are not able to

I've validated it myself by trying this, and i made sure I picked a
theme that is out of the box, as to not complicate it anymore.
However, once i try to apply the theme I recieve a Write error on file

Has anyone seen this? I've checked all over microsofts forums to no

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are now not amending the date
of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change
(so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than
important as important text changes ought to result in a major version
change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future
not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version
change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major
version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB
