Can someone give me a simple description on the best way to setup wss to
receive mail from an exchange server? I would like to know the proper
method.... how does it get from the exchange server to the sharepoint
server.. i have smtp running on the wss server and was directing incoming
mail directly to it, but now with exchange i'm not sure what to do...

John, the document that Jeff is referring to you is not necessarily what you
need. It is about MOSS 2007 and specifically about setting up DIRECTORY
MANAGEMENT SERVICES with incoming email (normal incoming email in no way
requires an OU in Active Directory). The paper is not about Windows
SharePoint Services, and not for just enabling and setting up incoming
email.

If you are using WSS (which I am assuming you are, else you would be posting
in a different newsgroup), and you only want to enable incoming email, read
the suggested document carefully, a lot of it does not pertain to you.

What you need to do (depending on the version of Exchange you are using, you
didn't specify), is simply direct it to forward or relay email that refers
to the WSS server's address, to the WSS server. And be sure that the SMTP
service running on the WSS server will accept email from the exchange
server.

I haven't done it yet but need to. From what i have read the advice I think
I will follow is this:

"What you need to do (depending on the version of Exchange you are using,
you
didn't specify), is simply direct it to forward or relay email that refers
to the WSS server's address, to the WSS server. And be sure that the SMTP
service running on the WSS server will accept email from the exchange

from callahan

Unless you recomend different.... I'm not totally sure of how to do this at
this point but I think I have an idea. This sounds very similar to how I
have it setup on my old server.

Hello John,

Yes, Callaha is correct that if you don't want to use the directory
management service to create distribution lists and contacts from
SharePoint sites. You can enable a basic incoming e-mail scenario by
installing the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service on the server
running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and enabling incoming e-mail by
using the automatic settings mode with all default settings. In this
scenario, e-mail is delivered directly to your SMTP server and Windows
SharePoint Services 3.0 periodically checks for e-mail in the default
e-mail drop folder that is automatically configured by the SMTP service.

Here are some articles for your further reference:

Plan incoming e-mail (Windows SharePoint Services)

Configure incoming e-mail settings (Windows SharePoint Services)

If you encounter any problem when setting up Incoming Email, please feel

I have reversed course and am trying the instructions you had sent but I am
not seeing objects appear in the OU as the instructions say... I think it
may be related to this: "you need to provide the SharePoint Central
Administration application pool account with write access to the container
you specify in the Active Directory". What is the "SharePoint Central
Administration application pool account "? maybe i have something else not
setup correctly?

Hello John,

From your feedback, I understand that you have started to setup the
Incoming Email feature. As we discussed, please open new threads when you
encounter the specific problems/issues during the setup process, as the
TechNet Managed Newsgroup is an issue based service, meaning we usually
respond to one question/issue per post. In this thread, we would like to
provide the information on how to setup Incoming Email. So for the
specific issues you encountered, please feel free to open new threads. We
are glad to be of assistance.

For your information, you can find the SharePoint Central Administration
application pool account from IIS - Server Name - Application Pools - right
click on SharePoint Central Administration v3 - select Identity tab, where
you can find the User Name and Password text boxes under Configurable
section. This account should also be same as the one running Windows
SharePoint Services Timer service where you can find from services.msc
console from Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services.

I hope the information above is helpful for you. If you need further
assistance on the query, please feel free to open a new thread. It is
always our pleasure to be of assistance.

Thank you for your understanding.
