    - STSADM Help Hello All: A few days ago we imported a site using STSADM. When we did the import we defined the -url as http://localhost. Now all alerts are being sent using http://localhost instead of the true name for the site. Does anyone have a fix for this other than exporting and reimporting the site using the correct url?     - SQL Server 2000 Upgrade Query Hi I've got a web farm install with sharepoint 2007 and sql server sitting on the same box; this was always temporary while we waited for a new server for SQL. What I wanted to check is am I best upgrading to sql 2005 first on the current box and then migrating or migrate to the new box first and then upgrade sql server?     - The user does not exist or is not unique. Howdy, Here's my scenario: A admin user (not me I swear) deleted about 20 users from our WSS3 ADAC site. In adding the users back in they all have a number affixed to their user names. I'm guessing Sharepoint is doing that due to unique SIDs and whatever. Anyway, we don't want the numbered names so i created the new user directly in the SharePoint OU of AD and then used the stsad migrateuser command to migrate the user from the numberd account to the normal account. This new account without the number can login successfully! However, when they go to change their password, they get the following error: The user does not exist or is not unique. I'm guessing this is due to the fact that SharePoint now has two user names cached or stored wherever it stores it but each of the same names have different SIDs. Again, this is a huge guess. So, anyone know how I can get around this? Is there a SQL table I can just modify the numbered user account manually? I know that's a no-no but I need this to work.     - Hiding columns from a user group.. Good day, Within my WSS v3 Intranet site I have created a Staff Listing for such information as full name, address (we have 14 offices), phone number, etc. I have also created a couple of columns within the list that I'd like to hide or filter out somehow from non-administrative accounts. Basically the Views are set up so that there is a listing of the user, phone, fax, and office location. This keeps the view nice and clean. If the staff clicks on one of the staff members listed, they get the complete details, which is what I want as there is also a digital pic of all staff, as well as off hours contact information, personal fax numbers, etc. But my problem is that I'd like to have these couple of additional columns for each user, but only want Administrative accounts to be able to see them.     - problem getting to sites from internet I brought up a new server with the latest WSS installed. I cannot get the site to come up from the internet. Here's what I have tried so far: To be sure IIS was working and to test connectivity I set up http://test28.leeallen.org with a simple htm page. This site serves up to any computer including my PDA and cell phone. This proved that the network is connected and that IIS seems to be working ok. Next I configured the sharepoint site to accept all port 80 requests as well as the specific url of http://moss.leeallen.org, I also enabled anonymous access for the site in both IIS and Sharepoint. This site will serve up on the server machine so WSS is working, But from any internet machine you get an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." error message. I'm stumped. Is there some IIS or WSS security property that prevents the site from displaying from other machines. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I don't know where to look next.     - Delete large number of calendar event items Many of our schools that are using Sharepoint 2003 are using the calendar for many different topics and as a result the number of events from the last two or three years has grown to be quite large. I have been asked if there is a "easy-button" for deleting the outdated events. In short is there any scriptable methods to remove old entries? Maybe a SQL Query??     - Content Editor Web Part Passing Current User Hello, I am trying to deliver embedded content from an application I have written into SharePoint 2007 (MOSS). I am trying to use the Content Editor Web Part and configure it to use a URL to get the HTML from the other application (on the same server). However, I need the request to the custom app to either be in the context of the requesting user or to pass the current user name in the Querystring. I know I could just write a custom Web Part to handle this but I was hoping to make it easy on myself. Does anyone have any suggestions.     - overlay sharepoint list with refreshed excel file I've got a two-fold issue. I'd like to take an excel sheet within a spreadsheet that gets updated/overlayed on a daily basis with the latest data and update the sharepoint list without sharepoint thinking every item in the list is new. The ultimate problem I'm trying to solve is to have alerts on each item in the list, only when data values change, but sharepoint seems to think the item changed when it really hasn't and alerts the user. What I tried to do is keep the id field and just overlay the rest of the data in the spreadsheet. Sharepoint saw that as a change and sent the alert. I need to capture new list items from that spreadsheet and data changes to existing list items. If there's a way to do this without having to write code?     - Issue with people-picker showing as drop-down with all users I have several document libraries set-up - some of which have custom columns that reference Groups of people.. For instance - I may have a column called "Test Person" and it is set to allow selection of people from a Sharepoint Group called "Test Group" - let's say in Test Group there are three users: User 1 User 2 User 3 Now let's say that all users of the site includes those users plus two more named User 4 and User 5. For whatever reason in my Sharepoint site - when editing any of my documents or creating new ones when the document's Web File Properties page comes up - the people picker is replaced with a drop-down that contains ALL users - so in the above example it would contain Users 1 to 3 AND 4 to 5. Please help. I know this was working before and suddenly - it's not - how do I get the people-picker back? Note - the people piker works if I edit the properties of the document directly through Sharepoint - but not when saving from WORD to Sharepoint.     - owssvr.dll will only display some lists in XML ... I have an intranet site running on Sharepoint (2003). I use owssvr.dll to save backups/archive list contents in XML format, e.g. the file 2008-01-09.xml will hold the list contents as of that date. However, I cannot display all lists this way. One particular list gives the error "Can not complete this operation. Please try again".     - Problem trying to install Team Foundation Server 2008 on a SharePoint Hi, I'm not even sure this is the correct newsgroup to post this in, but I'll give it a shot. I'm trying to install TFS 2008 on my local system, where I have SharePoint installed. I'm getting the following error: "setup could not determine what languages are configured for the windows sharepoint services site" I've installed the Languages Service pack, along with all Sharepoint extensions installed, so I have no clue what else I need to do.     - Record center issues When I send a document to the record center, all the metadata does not get copied. The Title, Lookup and Person/Group fields do not get copied to record center.     - Document Lib Up Button Is there any way to add the Folder Up button to a 2007 document lib? I have users that are complaining when they have to use the IE back to get out of a folder when in 2003 there was an up button after you entered a folder.     - re-adding a sub-web to the quicklaunch of the parent on WSS 3.0: when a sub-web was created we did NOT choose the option to display a link in the quick-launch of the parent site. Now, we do want the link to appear in the quick launch of the parent - if we add the url manually, the link appears for all users even if they don't have access. How can I re-add the sub-web so that SharePoint still does it's security Trimming? I see a property "isInternal" on an SPLink object, but it is read-only - and I don't see how to programmatically create a link to the sub-web and specify that it is internal.     - "File Not Found" error when adding new web part gallery I am currently in the process of learning how to create and deploy webparts using visual studio 5 and WSS3. I have been following the instructions on the following link on how to set up and create a web part : - " http://www.developer.com/net/asp/article.php/10917_3620316_1 " The actual creation of the webpart I believe is fine. However, the problem I am having difficulty with is the actual deployment of the web part. I get to point 8 on the guide and my WSS3 site throughs up the following error " File Not Found. " it is not an IE error, it is an actual WSS3 error, namely I get a WSS3 error page with all the borders. I am completely stumped as to why this is happening or how to rectify this.     - WSS3 + Win2K3 x64 Installation Woes I've been working at this for several days but am not making any progress. I've got no experience with WSS, IIS or SQL Svr 2005. WSS3 on 2K3 x64 requires the full SQL Svr to be installed. I've installed SQL Svr 2005 Std x64 with default settings opting to install only the Server package - all remaining options were unchecked. I've applied no additional changes to the Surface Area Configuration. There were no errors during the install. I installed WSS3 using the walkthrough at the Sharepoint Forum. No errors were reported. On completion of the wizard the Central Administration site did not open - I received the HTTP Error 404 text. I pressed ahead and added the URL to the Trusted Sites on the server, checked the URL from a network PC using Firefox, and also manually added /default.aspx. No joy. I was asked for a Username and Password in Firefox however the next page was HTTP Error 404. IIS reports SharePoint Central Administration v3 as Running under the Web Sites node with the default port 10806. All site files and folders appear to be fine. The Web Service Extensions node has ASP.NET v2.0.50727 Allowed and Windows SharePoint Services V3 was added during installation and is Allowed. I understand SQL Svr installs several services disabled by default, could that be the issue? I see several errors in the Event Log which I'll review tomorrow (it's 2am!). Upon doing a speed test, if your first page takes a great time to load in the visitor's browser, it is in the best interest to do some redesigning to decrease load time and increase the number of visitors that will not click back on the browser. We must remember that not everyone is running on DSL or Cable modem. Many users still dial up using a 56K connection. As web designers and site maintainers, we want to ensure our site's load quickly, as to not lose potential visitors to your site. Images, Sounds & Animations are the major menaces to download time. While these add nicely to a site, they may take up a lot of time to load. If you may avoid large sized files, please do. Many images may be optimized to look the same, however taking up less space, and download more quickly. Many image editors such as Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro can perform these tasks. Sounds & Videos should be avoided on your main page, as they take up most time to load. Keep these for inner pages if possible. Videos and sound files can be from 100 KB to 1 MB in size or larger. If the user needs to load a 500 KB video file on a 56 K modem, it will take upwards to 89 seconds to complete. This definitely could turn the user away from your site. So keep these files to a fairly small size, or avoid if possible. Text can also play a significant role in the load time. If you have a large amount of HTML code and large amount of content on your main page, it will also increase the load time. Text however is not as significant, as the entire text you have on the site may not be even the same size as a couple of pictures combined. So limit the large sized graphics on your web sites.     - lost iis config had a rather unfortunate time with asp.net updates and iis metabase corrupting. Long story short, I have iis and asp.net working again but the web sites for sharepoint v3 are all gone. I don't seem to have a backup of the iis config so i am wondering if I can recreate them somehow with info from the database?     - bug with RSS feed from Wiki? i just started to use the RSS feed from a Wiki i have on WSS 3.0 and i just noticed that when i get the RSS annoucnment it comes in under the creation date, not the modify date. i had just updated a wiki and i got the update ok but its dated months ago. Im using Outlook 2007, so i guess it could possibly be a bug there, but im guessing that the date and time are pushed from WSS and its not just how OL is reading the feed.     - Change Default Web Site to https I just upgraded from SharePoint 2.0 to SharePoint 3.0. When I was running 2.0 the default webpage was https://servername. I would like to continue this in 3.0. However if I type https://servername I get redirected to http://servername/default.aspx , and a message saying â??The page must be viewed over a secure channel.â?? If I go back up to the address bar and put in https://servername/default.aspx then it will take me into SharePoint. How do I get my default web site to use ssl? Now I have to update the list (or view), maybe add a column. In order to get the changed list on my webpartspages I have to delete and add the list again. Very annoying.     - Sharepoint (wss v3) questions. Good day, I hope you can help I am looking at purchasing a hosted sharepoint solution from 1 of the many providers available. Before I do I just wanted to make sure that WSS v3 can do what I want it to. Most providers offer X amount of "sub sites" I was wondering what a Sub site is? I have used a WSS v3 before and I when I use it properly I want a separate section of the site to be for each department/project of my company. For example we will have the main site this will contain basic company news, holidays, meetings coming up. I then require each project we work on to have its own separate space on the site for example "project 1" will have its own members and files / forum. "project 2" will have the same as project 1 and so on. Then I would also have such spaces as "sales" "support" etc etc. Do all these count as sub sites? Or would it depend how I would make them. My second question is about permissions. After inviting a user to my site as say a normal reader and then I want them to be an admin of the site how do I edit the permissions of that user? Last of all, if I do have my site set up with "project 1" "project 2" etc how do I setup users so they only have access to certain projects for example if I want contractors working from home to only have access to 1 section of my site how do I do this?     - Linked Excel Files in MOSS 2007 Hi all, Joel Oleson had a blog post last year about what not to store in SharePoint. He said that one should not store linked excel files. Has anyone out there had experience with trying to do this? What I want to do is upload a bunch of spreadsheets that reference each other to a document library and allow my users to continue working as per normal. According to what Joel said, it seems that the references in the excel files won't work.     - New Items in a custom list Hi All, Using SharePoint Server 2007. I have a 'Custom List in Datasheet View' that contains a 'Person or Group' column whose value is chosen from a SharePoint Group. The SharePoint Group in use contains several distribution lists, as well as one direct member. When entering a new row in the default Datasheet view, the column gives me a dropdown box showing all the members of all the relevant distribution lists - superb. However, when entering a new row via 'New, New Item', the column doesn't allow selection of the distlist members, only the direct member. Known bug?     - Attaching a domain as members Hey, I have a WSS 3.0 site that I have installed on my development environment. When it was installed, this environment was not connected to the domain, and as such the authorised users list doesn't include any of the accounts on the domain (except my own which I added manually as a site administrator). Effectively, what I want is for everyone on the domain (including accounts created in the future) to be given access to the site, basically in exactly the same way as occurs if installing WSS3.0 after already being joined to a domain. Generally I'm a software developer (.NET) with ASP.NET experience, but without experience with any form of Sharepoint. I need to have fallowing modules/functionalities in intranet: - organization structure (based on data from AD), - sharing documents (for some group with possibility to edit/read depending on rights in AD) - reservation's resources(conferences rooms, cars, video equipment etc.) - news (everybody can add news, but only admin can approve it) - events calendar (global and group based) with notification on mail. - training calendar (with possibility of joining to training, uploading training materials, etc.) - some kind of reporting services (but based on external databases - db2, informix, etc.) - faq - dashboard - photo gallery - some forms/survey to collect opinions from users - some kind of statistics for admins I suppose some of the functionalities described above are available in sharepoint (maybe require little modifications), another I need to write myself. Can you point me to some places describing how to start playing with this technology (wss) ? Is the web parts development for sharepoint similar some kind to asp.net web pars development ?     - WSS 3.0 Upgrade Issue - ASP.NET (32-bit) I installed WSS V2.0 from CD through Server Roles expecting the upgrade to V3.0 to be offered from Windows Update. I'm running 2k3 x64 so during installation both IIS and ASP.NET entered 32 bit emulation modes. I've now downloaded WSS 3.0 x64 which reports that ASP.NET must be Allowed in IIS Web Service Extensions. It is but in 32 bit emulation. How is emulation returned to x64 for IIS and ASP.NET or must I reinstall those services? I've checked http://www.wssfaq.com but I couldn't find any leads.     - Problem with MultiLine Text box displaying in an email Hello, I have a sharepoint form that has a workflow attached to it. Whenever the form is submitted it captures a couple of items from the form and send it out to a user. One of the fields it captures is a multi line text box, and when it is displayed in the email it has extra line spaces inserted into the email. Does anyone know how I can stop it from doing it?     - Unable to Edit User Information I have added WSS site to existing Sharepoint Portal server. We don't integrate with AD, and use local Windows User (of the server) instead. So, when we add the new user to the site, there's no email address for the created user account. When we try to edit the User Information, it only shows the account name, without other fields at all. I try to edit in SSP, but there's no Email Address field there. I already use administrator account. Without email address for the account, how does the Alert Me feature work? Or Workflow email, etc?     - Changing Ownership of a Document Hi -- This problem sounds soooo simple to overcome, but it seems to be one hard nut ... or maybe I'm just missing something. I have a fairly large number of "documents" in a set WSS 2.0 doc libraries. I need the ability to make a different person the owner (Author) of the document. I am looking for the quickest and easiest PROGRAMMATIC solution and hopefully this is something I can create a utility out of. Here is a synopsis of the solutions I've looked at: - Looked at using the SPList to extract the File into a MemoryStream, Delete the Document from the Library, then started looking into changing Security Context to Re-Add the File to SPList under this new Security Context ... This changing of Security Context looks very hairy ... - Looked at the WSSCONTENT Database and seeing if I just flip something around back here and spoof Sharepoint into the desired result. This of course is completely non-supported and disqualifies MS support down the road ... Since this didn't really prove itself to be "low hanging fruit" ... and is inherently dangerous from a support perspective ... I abandonded. Am I missing something, or is this just a nut-cracker special? Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated!     - help with alternate access mappings hello, I'm trying to get sharepoint to work from 2 offices via VPN. the VPN works fine (vpn is used for term server and printing). I need sharepoint to work from both offices - from the office with the servers sharepoint works fine but from the other office I get error saying permission denied. I've gone to the alternate access mappings and setup the IP address of the sharepoint server as an extranet. However it still doesn't work. When someone calls in with an issue, I want to create an electronic file folder for them, which I can attach documents to (including PDF's).     - Lookup to Image/Picture Library Hi All, In MOSS 2007, the HTML Rich Text Editor (in creating/editing Page) is able to lookup to Picture Library. Once the user click on the Image button, it will bring look up window which user able to select picture from existing Picture Library, if the picture is not available, user can click upload to insert new image to the Picture Library, which is very useful for simple content/page editor. But, I am not sure how to use this feature in WSS 3.0? In WSS 3.0 Custom Lists, is it possible to create column that link to Picture Library which user able to enter the column by lookup to the image? The current way is by creating Lookup column to Picture Library, which only shows dropdown to show title/id (even not able to select name). This way is very difficult for user to select the Image. The other way, is to enter URL address of image, which is very difficult for the user to enter as well. Currently, I plan to add custom lists for Product Listing to displays in the Commerce Portal. Hi,
I have a custom list which holds a whole lot of contacts.
One of the columns in for 'Company' which reads from another list in
sharepoint.

When we export the contacts the 'Company' field always has an ID
number instead of the title text for the company.
Is there any way of making this export/synchronise the text value
instead of the number??

Any info would be great.
