Windows XP and Office XP Pro are causing "edit document requires a windows
sharepoint services-compatible"

We have applied suggested fixes to two of the systems on the LAN to evaluate

Specifically -
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Office XP,
and then click Change.
4. Click Add or Remove Features - Change which features are installed or
remove specific features, and then click Next.
5. In the Features to install box, expand Office Tools, click the down arrow
next to Microsoft SharePoint Support, and then click Run from My Computer.
6. Click Update.

and

Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10
regsvr32 -u owssupp.dll

Both "fixes" function OK but the outcome is the same :-(

Anybody else have suggestion/fixes?

The first is the usual recommended method. I wouldn't call it a fix, it's
just that this function isn't set by default.

If both *work* I don't see the problem.

I have a user with similar problem. However, when we go to Currently
Installed Programs, Office XP is not listed. Each office program is, i.e,
Excel 2003, Word 2003, etc. Should I change this setting for each one or
should I be seeing an Office XP listing?

Well ignoring the fact that Excel 2003; Word 2003 are part of Office 2003
and not part of Office XP so you shouldn't be seeing Office XP listed,
Office 2003 ought to have this parameter set as it is the default setting.
If it is not set then you should run Setup in one of those Office 2003
products and re-set it.

BUT, it's odd that you do not have Office 2003 listed as only one item in
Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs. That's what I've seen on every
production and test machine I've used.

I see two possibilities.

1. You have only the Viewers of these two programs. They would then be
listed separately.
2. You have installed the programs from separate single application CDs (So
a Word 2003 product CD; and Excel 2003 product CD).

For 1. I don't know if the proposed action works. For 2. it should - I would
guess - but I have no experience of it.
