We've got several links on our sharepoint and it seems like the latest link
added ends up on the top. There doesn't seem to be a way to control the sort
on these links.

I've looked into this several times because it seems like that is something
that should be easily managed. Now I have to ask, how can I make it where
the links are alphabetically sorted by the description?

1. Are you asking about WSS 2.0 or WSS 3.0 ?

2. Are you talking about the order in Quick Launch or in a view in the Links
List ?

My guess this is WSS 3.0 and Quick Launch. There the default order is
alphabetic (in v2 it was per ID which was worse).

You can change it in Site Settings / Quick Launch to whatever order you want
(but you can't change that default).

While I was writing this question I was trying to figure out how to determine
what version of WSS I'm using. Were do I go to find this info. It's not the
usual "Help/About"

The Links list

There doesn't appear to be many options to change anything.

Very quickly and without bothering about version numbers which are the real
way, if you can see a recycle bin on the web page of a sub-site you have WSS
3.0 (a sub-site because you don't see it on the top-level site of a site
converted from WSS 2.0).

Otherwise check the version number in Site Settings - 6.x is WSS 2.0

5.x is the 2001 product SharePoint Team Services. I can't remember which SP
you have installed if you have .2614.

I *think* (it's a long time ago) you can also change it's sort order (for
Quick Launch) in FrontPage but in that case it would be using Front Page
2002 (although FP 2003 would probably work too). (Open the site in FP;
Select the Quick Launch section of the page; right-click; selection ca.
halfway down).
