We want to make it simple for some users that are dragging their heels on adding content to our site so I was
wondering if it's possible to create some sort of a template area that has "predefined" subareas and webparts
added to them, so all the people have to do is go to it and add their content. But I need like 12 of them, so
I was wondering if they can be copied and recreated?

Thanks!

Please do not post questions on Areas / sub-areas to the WSS newsgroup as
these are only present in SPS 2003. The SPS newsgroups should be enough for
this posting (and probably only one of them would have been enough too)

Pardon me if my postings have ruined your day, I didn't realize you were the newsgroup police.
It should be obvious by my postings that I don't know a heck of a lot about SharePoint, which is why I am
asking questions on several groups because I am not sure which is the best - as well, these Sharepoint
newsgroups don't get a lot of responses so I do raise my chances of getting an answer to my question by
crossposting to several, which I might add is what another newsgroup police person such as yourself asked me
to do when I had "multi-posted" once.

Yes, Mike is out of control. He's even taken it upon himself to disparage

Easy, all... let's be friendly here. We're all reading this little soap
opera. And congrats to SizzleMaster for making it to Mike's blog. Who knew
fame and fortune would be so easy???

Posting to more than one newsgroup is a waste of all our time, actually...
so try to pick one newsgroup to post and don't sweat if it's the wrong group.
Generally, the SPS folks try to read most of them periodically-- and we all
have day jobs that prevent this from happening from time to time.

Now, on to Meg's question:

Careful with Areas. Areas can be quite buggy... I'd recommend avoiding the
API (including the object model AND web services) around area creation if at
all possible. And if you don't, don't say you weren't warned.

You CAN however edit, and create your own, area templates to do exactly what
you mentioned. An Area is just a specialized version of a STS team site (WSS
site).

Go to the site layouts directory and make a copy of the SPSTOC folder and
rename it to your own name:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\SPSTOC
Rename this to something like:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server
extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\SPSSUPERFREAKYAREA

Then reference the name in WEBTEMPSPS.XML. Now, edit that sucker until your
own evil plans have come to fruition. Don't forget to IISRESET or you won't
see the template in the site settings. You can pick your new evil template
from the page http://localhost/_layouts/1033/SPEditCategory.aspx. Click on
the Page tab.

There are a few gotchas to working with Areas. You can't use the EXECUTEURL
tag in ONET.XML, as it will be ignored.

Good luck! And be friendly to each other for pete's sake.... or else you'll
get on MY blog too!!! http://www.portalbuilder.org/sites/daniellarson/blog

That was quite a while ago - I'm (believe it or not) more forgiving nowadays
:)

I should start charging for people plugs ? (:) !)

(Posted only to the thread in the WSS newsgroup so that Daniel sees it but
none of the SPS people are bothered with this response. Apologies to WSS
people but this *is* an old thread by now.)

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the earlier bickering, however I don't have access to the actual

You're quite welcome. I'm glad to add a little sarcasm and friendliness to
ease the bickering...

You can only do this type of thing with access to the server. (Without
access to the server, you may end up bickering. Or on Mike's blog... take
your pick.)
