    - Recreating Central Adminitration without the Content DB So, a customer of ours decided to do a few things with their SharePoint site... They deleted the Central Admin content database AND removed the website from IIS. Now, they can't access Central Admin but also can't really run anything via stsadm because the content db is missing. They have no backups of the content db either. Any ideas how I can recreate the central admin site without risking the rest of the web app content dbs or sites?     - Draw text onto jpg Image Hey How can I draw some text onto to a jpg using System.Web.UI.WebControls.Image. I would like to make a membercard webpart with the name of a member logget in printed.     - Picture Library anonymous access In our WSS site we've created a picture library with anonymous access enabled for the entire site. Whenever an anonymous user clicks on the download button of the picture library, they get an authentication login box. The browser is trying to goto /_layouts/Dladvopt.aspx.     - WF Instance Reuse Hello all, I'm developing a workflow that will take data from a list item and send it to two different external sources (Active Directory and Exchange). I'm developing two custom activities, one for each data source. Right now, they simply get the list item from workflowProperties and process it. However, I've seen in multiple places that if an instance of the workflow is already running when a new instance is started, SharePoint will reuse the old workflow instance's objects. This is very confusing to me. If SharePoint reuses the Workflow object and all of its activities, doesn't that mean I can't use any instance variables? Do correlation tokens come into this at all?     - outgoing email settings Hi All Was just wondering if anyone can assist with setting up a sharepoint installation for email alerting. I'm no export but have had this dumped on me so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'll explain my scenario. I have a single windows 2008 server with sharepoint installed. I have been able to extend the site to have an external internet facing site and have found out how to set up forms based authentication for these users. There is a database which contains usernames, passwords and email addresses. We purchased a domain name and have had the DNS settings changed to point to our external IP address. We have a linux based Firewall and I have created a dmz area for the webserver to sit in with only one port open. The sharepoint ssl port number This all appears to be working great. I want to use our domain host's smtp address to send email. In the sharepoint central admin siteI have typed in this address and the sending from and reply to emailaddress in both outgoing email option and web app email option. i have also added these details in to IIS 7.0 smtp server settings. I have also opened port 25 through firewall. However the alerts are still not working and I am getting these errors in the log Event 6858 an error occurred while talking to the smtp host. Error reading from smtp host The email address =91xxxx=92 contains illegal characters Can anyone please explain to me what I need to do in getting this all working.     - Losing impersonation when postback on webparts Hi, I've got a Assembly that impersonates a user giving other credentials. Today I added a new list & changed the Quick Launch ( nothing more ) and all of a sudden the resolve.aspx doesn't work anymore. I've tried resetting this page to the site definition with no result.     - SharePoint List Time Column I am experieincing an issue where when I add a date & Time column to a list, such as the Shared Documents List it will use the current date AND time.     - Farm/Web/Site Administrator Unable to Edit Document Libraries, This is driving me nuts and any advice is truly, truly appreciated. I have a subsite with unique permissions that will not let those with "Full Control" edit properties of a list. I can add items to lists, I can add members, I can edit items. I can't do other things, which is the part driving me nuts. Can't create views, edit columns, edit title/description, etc. with a list item. When I go into Create all I can see is the "Web Pages" heading (Basic Page, Web Part Page, Sites and Workspaces). http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/6174/20080722093302qn8.jpg I can still get into Site Settings just fine.     - Sharepoint Site Displays and Behaves Incorrectly on Client Browsers. Hi. We recently deployed MOSS 2007 in our organiztion. After much customization and tweaking, we were finally ready to launch, but a test deploeyment showed that quite a number of users could not view the portal properly. That is, once they signed in, certain features were displayed incorrectly, or menus didn't work at all.The SITE ACTIONS button absolutely refused to work for such people. Including the document library buttons. Also on the MySite pages, the display was a bit broken; certain text was too large and things like the 'Create Blog' buttons were misplaced on the page. Also, on these user's systems, the site acquired a 'Skip to main content link' at the top right. that doesn't appear on mine, Normal links work fine, but it's totally useless to such people because they can't access many features. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this. It seems very random, it happens with people with IE6, IE7, Winxp SP1, SP2.... Ironically it works fine on other browsers like Firefox, so I'm thinking it's the browser. I don't know what to do. Any ideas??!? Tag: announcement alerts to all staff Tag: 67407

    - problem with sharepoint search I have a problem with my sharepoint configuration and can't figure it out. Because of another internal site running, I changed it to use port 81. The problem I think is that there are still some items somewhere showing port 80 which is causing a problem. I'm getting event 2436 every 5 minutes about the 'search index file on the search server' saying 'object not found 0x80041201' I've been looking around under application management and i see the web application there and it shows both 'sharepoint - 80' and the administration. problem is, i deleted 'sharepoint - 80' and created 'sharepoint - 81' and the search doesn't show port 81 which is why it's failing because it isn't running on 80. the sharepoint site itself is running fine on 81. still learning sharepoint so not sure where to go from here..     - SPD Dataview puzzler Here is a little puzzle for you WSS/SPD veterans to figure out. The scenario is that I have a small WSS 3.0 site going. There are now 10 subsites, each with the usual libraries and lists. In the libraries, the uploader of a document must enter values in at least two added metadata columns that define the document's scope (5 possible values including 'General') and classification (9 possible values). Each library typically has a only folders at the 'root', and each folder can have sub-folders, etc. The 10th site is a wiki where users can discuss the various classifications. Management wanted a listing of the relevent documents from the other sites filtered by scope and classification shown on the wiki pages. No problem, sez I! I had done this sort of thing in a 2.0 site. And with the increased versitality of ver 3.0, should be no problem. So I fired up SP Designer, added the libraries, and created the dataview. Then in Dataview Properties, selected "Item and folder scope" value as "Recursive" instead of "Default" so the folders would be eliminated, and... "The server returned a non-specific error when trying to set data from the data source...." Of course, at this point I was no longer able to set parameters, filters, sorts, etc. Very frustrating! However, at some point in the head-banging process, I discovered that if I save the page _with_ the error, the dataview renders perfectly in IE!! But no matter how I generated the dataview, the same error would pop up in SPD after selecting anything but "default". Eventually, I developed a work-around, which was to set all the filters, sorts and other parameters, including formating, hyperlinks, etc EXCEPT the "Item and Folder scope" value. To do this, I had to upload a dummy file to the 'root' of the Library, as I could not set all the Data Source parameters if there were only folders there. Then, as the final step, selected "recursive". Immediately, the error is generated. But when I save the page, the new DataView renders perfectly in IE! I am NOT a programmer, XSL and I are merely nodding aquaintances, so I must do 90% of any sharepoint customization in a design tool such as SPD. And to answer in advance some of your suggestions... The decision to use folders in the Libraries is concrete. Some of the Libraries are expected to grow into the hundreds of files, so practical managment of these files by typical corporate users dictates a familiar orgaization of the files, Additionally, we will be switching most users to to use their Sharepoint sites as their Default locations for MS Office. However, the dataviews were requested in a no-folder format. Go figure. So- my questions after all this are... Has anyone else come across this SPD bug? Is there a easier work-around than the one I described? Is there a fix for this- a setting change, etc? I would like an better method of generating these dataviews, as there is no way to edit them, unless you really know XSL, once the error has occured. I Googled this problem and came up with some people who posted similar problems, but none of the inquiries generated a reply. And I did not find this exact problem addressed at Microsoft.     - Migrating User accounts and SQL server to a new Domain Hi This is a 2 part question. Scenario. We have SharePoint Services SP2 on Windows 2003 SP2 set up on our Web server in our DMZ Domain. Domain = "DMZ". We have an internal corporate domain. Domain "LAN" We were recently aquired by another company and we will be migrating all our current user accounts to a new child domain in the new company. Domain = "Child" We will be using the Active Directory Migration tool to move our our accounts from Domain LAN to Domain Child. Will I need to reset all the access permisions for our users once they have been migrated to the Child Domain or is there a tool that can be ran on the Web Server (Or else where) that can I dentify which users had a LAN\Useraccount and create them a Child\useraccount logon to SharePoint services with the same permisions. Question 2) Can I change the domain that the SQL server holding the back end database is in from LAN to Child without breaking anything? The Web server sitting in the DMZ Domain will remain in the DMZ domain. There is no plan to rename this domain. Thank you for any help or advice that you can offer. Server --- Windows Server Standard Edition 2003 SP2 Yesterday I applied the MS Updates on my servers and rebooted them. Every morning i check each of the servers Application and Services event log just to make sure everything is running smoothly. This morning on one of my servers in the application event log there is are 100's of error messages (basically every 30 seconds from the time the server was rebooted after the ms updates): error message: Windows Sharepoint Services 2.0 Event # 1000 Category None description: #50070: unable to connect to the database STS_Config on servername\sharepoint. check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running. for more information see help and support center at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events/asp. However, at some point in the head-banging process, I discovered that if I save the page _with_ the error, the dataview renders perfectly in IE!! But no matter how I generated the dataview, the same error would pop up in SPD after selecting anything but "default". Eventually, I developed a work-around, which was to set all the filters, sorts and other parameters, including formating, hyperlinks, etc EXCEPT the "Item and Folder scope" value. To do this, I had to upload a dummy file to the 'root' of the Library, as I could not set all the Data Source parameters if there were only folders there. Then, as the final step, selected "recursive". Immediately, the error is generated. But when I save the page, the new DataView renders perfectly in IE! I am NOT a programmer, XSL and I are merely nodding aquaintances, so I must do 90% of any sharepoint customization in a design tool such as SPD. And to answer in advance some of your suggestions... The decision to use folders in the Libraries is concrete. Some of the Libraries are expected to grow into the hundreds of files, so practical managment of these files by typical corporate users dictates a familiar orgaization of the files, Additionally, we will be switching most users to to use their Sharepoint sites as their Default locations for MS Office. However, the dataviews were requested in a no-folder format. Go figure. So- my questions after all this are... Has anyone else come across this SPD bug? Is there a easier work-around than the one I described? Is there a fix for this- a setting change, etc? I would like an better method of generating these dataviews, as there is no way to edit them, unless you really know XSL, once the error has occured. I Googled this problem and came up with some people who posted similar problems, but none of the inquiries generated a reply. And I did not find this exact problem addressed at Microsoft.     - Unable to assign a new task item to a SharePoint group via Workflow Using SharePoint Designer I've created a simple Workflow associated with a Document Library. The Workflow can be manually started from any document, and it creates a new item in a Tasks list. The Workflow completes succesfully if the new task is assigned to a specific user. The Workflow fails if the new task is assigned to a SharePoint group. The Status is "Error Occurred" and the Workflow History lists the following: 7/17/2008 12:27 PM Error System Account Error updating a list item Unknown error 7/17/2008 12:27 PM Error System Account An error has occured in Workflow 1. A new task assigned to a SharePoint group can be created manually via the web interface, so I'm not sure why it will not work via a Workflow. Any help is appreciated, thanks!     - Combine Lists Hello, I am fairly new to SharePoint and am wondering if someone could point me in the general direction. I have two lists, with some columns. This is working fine so far...     - Content types based on 2007 word template that uses Building Blocks Hello - I'm trying to deploy a content type in WSS that's based on a 2007 Word document template. The .dotx file has standard content in it and I created a bunch of Building Blocks that I hoped would save directly to the template. I uploaded the template to sharepoint and linked it to the content type. I enabled that Content type in a document library and had some users create a new document with that content type. Users report the custom Building Blocks aren't available in the docs they create. Does anyone know how to get the Building Blocks to transfer with the dotx. template?     - MachineName\UserName transfer on restore? I am restoring a client's database from the test environment to the production environment. The server names are completely different. However, all the usernames include the servername of the test server. I restored the WSS3.0 site successfully, but all my SharePoint users still have the old machine name in front of their username.     - Dataview Problems with WSS Library I have a WSS 3.0 site that has 9 subsites, each with its own document libraries. I have been asked to set up a 10th site that contains, among other things, a dataview listing of the files in a library on site2. The problem is that this library uses folders, with each top folder having two or more subfolders. In the dataview that Sharepoint Designer gives me, I can only list the top folders. The user would like to see a sorted files-only list (the folders should not be shown), much like one of the views he has set up in the library itself. Is this possible? I have tried making the files-only view in the library the default view, but that does not seem to change how sharepoint creates the dataview. I tried setting the Properties of the Data Source to "Files Only", but that does not change anything. I am not a programmer, and the only tool at my disposal is Sharepoint Designer. Does anyone know of a custom webpart or other product that would provide administrators more granular control over permission levels in WSS 3.0? Each specific permission option often contains multiple functions, for example the List Permission for: "Manage Lists - Create and delete lists, add or remove columns in a list, and add or remove public views of a list." I'd like to able to break this down and permit a user to add or remove public views of a list but NOT create/delete lists or add/remove columns. I'm thinking smart cards, certificates and things like that. In the Site Settings, the Site usage report says "A usage report is not available for this site and bla-bla". Hi I'm running WSS 3.0 users authenticate via AD 2k3, I'm trying to
setup a group in AD where i can add all the users as well as new hires,
and have the announcements alert this group. I did a DL at first but
that didn't work so i created a security group with email and added all
staff but when i created a new announcement noone got the alert. any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you have to add the e-mail enabled security group to a permission group in
the site collection, site, or list, et
Or add your users per head to the users list for which e-mail alert should
work.
