    - The search service is unavailable or access was denied. I have issue with Manage Profile Database page (XXXX Portal > Site Settings Manage Profile Database). The following error appears on this page. "The search service is unavailable or access was denied. Check that the search service is configured properly and running. " I have SharePoint Portal Server 2003 with 2 top level sites. The search seems to be working fine for top level sites, but not for the Portal and People. I know, I had some issues with resetting content password and if that is the case then I'm not sure what needs to be done to fix this issue. Also I could see following warning message in event viewer.     - Accessing a SQL Server View in an Data View I have STS 2003 with all the latest patches and service packs. I also have a SQL Server with all the latest patches and service packs. I have created a data view in the past which returned information from a specific SQL Server table. When I go to create a data view and I look at the list of Tables, views or stored procedures, I only see stored procedures and tables. All of the tables are listed as Type table or view. But I only see views there. I originally thought I had a permissions issue, so I tried it as sa and that didn't change anything either. Is there something on my SQL Server that I need to change?     - Editing some code Hey All, I have a wss page that has some webparts on it. What I have done is pulled off the webparts in frontpage and pasted each one to its own seperate webpage. When you navigate to a specific link you get a webpage with a single webpart on it. Now what i would like to do is to take away the hyperlinking contained inside the webpart itself. This is simply a standard list with an accompanying webpart view. When you click on the link it takes you to the actual list item. The real goal here is to prevent end users from seeing the WSS back end. By this i mean i really dont want people to even know (besides from the webpart) that the page was created using WSS. I figured, before i started this project, that i would be able to track down the hyperlink fairly easily but upon closer inspection it seems that the links are built dynamically.     - Installing Webpart using Wppackager fails I've updated our windows server 2003 last week with servicepack 1. But now i'm unable to install a our webparts. We've created installers with wppackager and all of our installers did work until the servicepack 1 upgrade. I've tried to install on a different windows server 2003 ( clean install + sp1 ) and they do work. So i'm guessing it's a configuration issue, modified by installing servicepack 1.     - About Web part pages Hello, Because I want my own design and I don't want to mess up with WSS sites, I have taken the habit to create separate Web part pages to display information. My questions: - When I modify such Web part pages in FrontPage - for example to remove the top Navbar - does it unghost the site? - When I modify the page in SharePoint (using "Design this page"), it does not create a new version of the .aspx file.     - Meeting Workspace Link Editing Simple request but probably impossible to solve. How do you edit the link between a meeting in a meeting workspace series and outlook calendar entry? More Detail: We have a meeting workspace that is a series of meetings going back over a year. It used basically as a minutes and decisions type of thing and works brilliantly. The MW was created in WSS but the series was created in Outlook and linked to the WSS. However in August we had to change the machine the WSS site was on (lease was up) and we migrated everything to the new server. It appeared to go very well and everything just carried on working. Unfortunately we changed the name of the server the site is on and this has lead to a big problem now. We needed to change some things with the series so the recurrence was changed slightly in outlook. Problem is the Link to the meeting workspace in outlook is burried somewhere and now none of the calendar entries link to their respective meetings in the series on WSS and any attempt to change anything is no longer reflected on the WSS as the changes are being sent to the old server name and location of the WSS and we are getting a bounce back saying it can't update the meeting workspace. So anyone know how I can fix this? I know someone is going to jump all over this and say it's an outlook issue but I checked the outlook groups on google first and they have woefully little on meeting workspaces and linking to them, other than how you do it.     - Error in workflow creation with pre-relase of Microsot windows sharepoint services 3.0 Could I do a question about the beta of WSS 3.0? :) I'm trying the product for my thesis work, installed on my default localhost website (called also "pcmobile"). Seems that all works fine (besides, no installation error) but when i'm trying to follow the instruction published in chapter 4 of "Presentig windows worklow foundation, Beta Edition" by Sams (ISBN: 0-672-32848-8) i receive the following error: Error The file '/_layouts/CstWrkflIp.aspx' does not exist. Infact this file doesn't exist in my virtual website. I'm trying to create a new workflow in sharepoint in this way: 1)Start from the hompage of my website (something similar to http://pcmobile/default.aspx) 2)open "shared document" and then open "document library setting" 3)Open "Workflow setting" 4)Type something in the name of the workflow, leaving the default setting for the other values. 5)Receive the error :) (The file '/_layouts/CstWrkflIp.aspx' does not exist.)     - Edit Text in Issue List Hi, We have an issues list with a text box we use to enter free form text describing the issue. When a user comes along later to edit the issue, the description text field is blank. They can enter a new description and save. The audit list of the issue will have the old description, it's just not there when you edit it. Is this by design? or is this a problem? We'd like to be able to edit text without reentering it.     - Limit Date value in Date Time Field ? I have a rather interesting problem. We have a Custom List in WSS used to record Timesheet data which uses several of the regular field types, including a "Date and Time" field to record the date of the Timesheet entry. We would like to restrict the user from entering a date that is greater that eight days ago (i.e. Today-8 Days). This is an attempt to prevent people from entering their weekly timesheet data more than a week after the day in question. Is there a way to do this in the default settings and if not is there a way to hack the code driving the list/form using VS ?     - Install WSS, System Error 1057 I've really got a mess here. This may not be a SharePoint install problem, rather it might be Windows domain and firewall issues. I have a 2003 domain controller which also hosts SQL Server 2000 SP4. In the same subnet is another 2003 server that hosts WSS (call it Server1). This was installed with remotesql=yes, I also setup accounts for application pools, granted access in SQL Server. Great, the whole installation works as it should. Now I have to setup another WSS server (call it Server2) in a different subnet. This subnet is our DMZ and the port restrictions have been pretty severe. Sysadmin has opened all the ports we think we need for Active Directory and other Windows domain participation. Server2 used to have WSS with WMSDE (SQL desktop edition). Rather than screw around with modifying config, I removed WSS and WMSDE, then reinstalled WSS with remotesql=yes. Selected "Server Farm" option. Problem #1: it takes literally 3 to 5 minutes for the WSS Admin page to come up. Every time I go to the page "localhost:22234", it takes minutes. I KNOW this is wrong. Then when I try to setup Configurable admin application pool I get Error 1057 if I use a local account with Administrators privileges (and also IIS_WPG and the other, or whatver those are). If instead I use a domain account "MY_DOMAIN\whoever", I get a "cannot authenticate" or somethiing like that - I'm not convinced that our domain participation is fully functional, but does it matter at this stage? Problem #2: On Server1 (the good installtion) I see that SPTimer runs as "MY_DOMAIN\someone". On Server2 it used something else. So I tried to change SPTimer to same domain account, but get the "cannot authenticate" message. So then I tried a local account and now get 1057. So what can I deduce from all this? 1. Domain participation of Server2 is suspect. 2. It takes minutes to load localhost SharePoint admin page, does this have anything to do with domain participation? I can't see how.     - Document Workspaces hi, We have the windows sharepoint version when purchased with microsoft small business server 2003. We have tried to use the document workspace functionalities so that a few users can work on a spreadsheet simultaneously. Howver, it seems that only one user can access a document at any one time, when any user tries to edit the file, it will say, the file is locked, can either read only or choose to notify the person who is currently using it.     - Persist user information using only out-of-the-box web parts I am looking for a simple way to persistent a couple of pieces of user information (LoginID, ProductID, max. 4-5 pieces of information) on a WSS site. The end result is to produce a series of hyperlinks to a old backend database like this: Show All My Problems - http://server/query.cfm?loginID=[loginID] Show All My Current Project Problems - http://server/query.cfm?loginID=[loginID]&productID=[ProductID]. Using the standard XML web part, I tried to use a simple XML file, like this <UserData> <LoginID>57</LoginID> <ProductID>104</ProductID> </UserData> Then use an XSL to render the dynamic links into HTML like this: Show All My Problems - http://server/query.cfm?loginID=57. Show All My Current Project Problems - http://server/query.cfm?loginID=57&productID=104. This works fine for a single person. I wanted to have each user only change the XML portion of the web part, customize the userinformation to him/her. Thus, he would do this once, and we would persist the user's data in the XML portion of the web part. My limitations that I am working with: Current web pages, html pages, aspx etc and standard out of the box Web parts only. (basically anything I can do with the current SP interface) Can't create a custom web part (real easy to retrieve the user information in the tool pane). Can't change server configuration to enable serverState (don't have access to the server) Links generated will be over 260 characters, so I can't use the links web part. User specific data is not sensitive data, others could see this information if they had to (thinking of a SP List) Does anyone know of an easy way to embed user information into a team site somewhere?     - Customizing home page layout I am the administrator of a Sharepoint team website, thus I have the administrator role assigned to myself. When I try to go into customizing the home page layout and move some columns around I get this error (which is very vague, but I believe it's got something to do with security). Error Unable to change homepage layout An error occurred while trying to save the changes to the homepage. Please try again. If this problem persists, please contact your administrator. Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint. If I go to the server itself and log in as Administrator I can successfully change the layout. What can I do to make it possible to be able to change the web page layout myself? I have subwebs for the different departments, and the department heads are all administrator to their own pages - they need to be able to do this as well.     - 'New Document' button not working for some users We use Office 2000 in our company. I can use the "New Document" button in the document library and it opens Word and is fine. A co-worker, however gets this error: "'New Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. To add a document to this library, click the 'Upload Document' button.". We are both using the same version of Word (v 2002) and IE 6. Are there any settings in IE that might cause this error?     - The page cannot be found page I've installed sharepoint services, been experiencing with it, been impressed with it. It has been working pretty good except for 2 errors I get and cannot find the cause. 1- When trying to upload a document, "the page cannot be found" page appears at the end. The document gets successfully uploaded. When I refresh the page i can see it has been added. 2- When trying to design a page, add web parts ... the same message appears.     - Authentication from different trusted domain I have a WSS server in an external AD domain. I want to enable my internal AD Domain users to access sharepoint sites on the WSS server. I've set up the trust relationship between the two forests, and all is well. I have been able to assign a user from my internal domain to the user list for a Sharepoint site, and the user is able to log in to the site, but have not been able to assign a security group from my internal domain to the Sharepoint site. I can assign the group, but users in that group can not log in to the site. Is this working as designed?     - File MetaData and Views Hello all, I want to organise our company's documents using metadata. My goals are: 1. Upload - Create documents into one or more Document Libraries (I don't mean multiple copies, just making clear that what follows will have to apply to more than one library). 2. Assign metadata to these documents, most of the time using lookup lists. Good examples are `Customer` metadata (i.e. a list of our customers and each document would be related to one - or more - customer) and document type (i.e. a document can be of type `Order`, while this could be a Word document, PDF etc). 3. Different libraries will have different `mandatory` metadata, while all libraries will share the same lookup lists (i.e. the `orders` library will require the `customer` metadata but `presentations` library will not require `customer` but `product` metadata and so on) 4. I want the users to be able to view those documents through (pre-designed) views, depending on the metadata, no matter the location (library) of the document. Now, I managed to get all 1,2 and 3 in a document library but I can't get to 4. There is now way I can see in one view documents from more than one library. Is this thing possible in STS? There is an obvious but un-acceptable solution: Put everything in one library. But there are several issues with this approach: a. Permissions. If I use one library, I have one permissions' set for all users and all documents. b. Efficiency. As I know, there is a limit on how many documents and folders (if I use folders, but I'd prefer not to) a library can hold. c. Mandatory fields. I will have to either require all metadata or leave all metadata optional. Any advice on how to accomplish 4 or how to address issues a,b,c will be most helpfull...     - Weird Web Folder behavior - Cannot Copy <filename>: The File Exists Hi I'm having a strange problem with WSS Web Folders. Some of my users have problems copying documents to and from Web Folders (WebFldr.aspx view) - "Explorer View" . Whenever they try to copy, either using Ctrl+c and Ctrl+V, or use the menu "Copy this file" they consistently get the error: Cannot copy <filename>: The file exists. We're using kerberos authentication. When I check the event log it doesn't display any problems, and all authentications are kerberos based. What I find strange is the fact that it works for some users and not for others. A hint: It seems that the users with problems have upgraded from Office XP to 2003 - but even that is not 100% consistent. I tried to repair Office - didn't help.     - Disaster Recovery (SQL Server May Not Be Running) This isn't so much a question as a point I wanted to make as it helped us greatly. It's mostly to say thanks to Dustin Miller as I know he reads these and one of his posts was a HUGE help in us remedying the problem. We recenetly ran into a little problem during a system restore which was giving an error saying "SQL Server may not be running". In case any of you have this problem I figured I'd quickly share our experience with it: What Triggers It: When creating a site that has a list, and a post to that list. For example if you tried to create a Team Site - this site has an announcements list and a post created in that list. This triggers the problem - the "posting part". The reason: The reason is due to the accounts trying to create it. The 'underlying reason' is due to the SID (Security ID) getting mixxed up and not matching up. The solution: Dustin Miller had a script posted that would go down through and get the proper SID's for you to match up again. It worked wonders and we we able to get to the bottom of the problem using this method. So again, this is more to say thanks to Dustin. Hello, I am a recent user of Sharepoint and had a question: I have taken interest in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 that was installed and running fine. When I go to the toplevel domain (say: http://mysite.com) >> Site Settings >> Manage users and add a domain user (say: mydomain\mynewuser) as an administrator (site administrator), the user is added as expected. After that, if the local machine's administrator created a site under toplevel (say: http://mysite.com/sites/colleges), site administrator (mydomain\mynewuser) is not able to access/administer this new site (college). Why? Is this by design? Should mynewuser be added as an administrator on (college) site exclusively? Will "college" site not inherit administrative rights of site user "mynewuser"? Toplevel (mynewuser is administrator; can create a new site) | | college (created by local computer administrator; mynewuser has no privileges here. why?) Thank you very much.     - Business Intelligence for SharePoint web hosting Howdy, I've been tasked with creating reports for a hosting environment of several thousand sites with Windows SharePoint Services on Windows Server 2003 and MS-SQL 2000. I don't think I'll need to get too far off the beaten path with this--looking for stuff like sites near or at storage quota, which files are taking the most space (by extension or file type (e.g. video)), are any sites or subsites dark (no traffic for X months), etc. The SQL Server Report Pack for SharePoint Portal Server (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA012305181033.aspx) seems to go a long way toward my end except for the Portal Server requirement. Can I set up a 'reporting server' with SPS 2003 and SQL 2000 Reporting Services and run reports off the data from the Data Extraction Program? Or would I have to have SPS on the servers hosting the WSS sites? If SPS is a requirement on the hosting servers, is there something analogous to the Report Pack for WSS environments? (I think we do have some SharePoint Portal Server installations around, but licensing costs make it desirous to keep the main hosting strictly Windows SharePoint Services.) Also my bosses have been mentioning Business Intelligence and specifically MS's Business Scorecard Manager (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX012225041033.aspx). Most of what I've read on BI concerns areas such as sales force automation and supply chain management. Are there any white papers or examples of applying BI or concepts such as the data warehouse matrix (http://www.intelligententerprise.com/db_area/archives/1999/990712/webhouse.jhtml) to web hosting? All our customers are internal, so we're not (currently) looking into areas such as sales and billing. We just want better reports on what's going on with the hosting environment. For example, I will have two fields in a sharepoint list, one called 'Commit Date', the other 'Original Commit Date'. The user names on my WSS sites often display twice in user-level reporting
statistics. The Active Directory for the users is called WSS, and when you
view my stats you will often see something like

john.lastname --stats--

and later on the page see

WSS\john.lastname --stats--

Is anyone familiar with this issue and how to resolve it?

I have found this on sites that have Clear Text authentication enabled.
Users can logon with UserID or domain\UserID.
