    - displaying current directory in Document Library custom page In the default page that WSS creates for displaying a document library, there is a yellow folder icon in the title bar, and beside it is displayed the folder name of the current folder in the doc library. As you navigate through the folders & subfolders, it updates this to reflect the name of the current folder. I would like to add this feature to a custom web parts page I've created.     - Create a Survey and pass parameter to prepopulate a field? We offer training classes and we want to offer surveys with Sharepoint web that we have. Though we don't want to have to have the user type in some of the info we need. We want to send them a link that has some of that info in it already. So it would be cool if I could use the same survey, buy pass it the class ID, Something like this. http://surveyit.ourdomain.com/Lists/class1/NewForm.aspx?classID=1234 Is there a way I can take that value passed in from the URL and prepopulate one of the items on the Survey?     - Bypass Login, Revisited WSS on Win2K3 Server. I just converted to WSS from a simple FrontPage Server Extensions 2 setup and am having a difficult time with my public web site. Users visiting the web site are prompted with the "Enter Network Password" with Username, Password and Domain boxes. I think it is down to an anonymous authentication issue. I have ensured that IIS has Anonymous authentication enabled and the IUSR_computername account is set up for read access, however, in the MS instructions for SP I also need to complete the steps below. The only problem is that I don't know the EXACT steps to complete steps 1 & 2 below.     - Categorizing events - need system to group by I am very pleased with what I can do with the standard WSS events list. I have added some additional fields and I can then create views that group by the data in these additional fields. Now what I want to be able to do is indicate a number of categories for a single event and find a way to group by them in a view. For example, an event listing for a city commission meeting might have agenda items that affect several neighborhoods. I'd like to be able to indicate which neighborhoods it affects and then create a view that lists event by neighborhoods with agenda items, which would be very useful to neighborhood residents. I can indicate a single neighborhood with a field and a drop down menu and then group by this field, but it doesn't give me what I need. If I add a field call neighborhood with checkboxes, allowing multiple items to be checked, then this field with multiple possible values is not listed in the column names that I can search by.     - permissions for sites saved as templates I have saved some sites as templates and added them to the site template gallery. The problem I'm finding is that other users don't see these templates when they go to create a new site.     - Error: Requested registry access is not allowed. We have a webpart page on our site that works fine ... but then out of the blue we get an error on the page. When I look in the event log it says, "Requested registry access is not allowed." we reset IIS and the problem went away. When trying to get to Explorer View in the document library I get this IE pop-up error: "Cannot find 'file://\\MyWssServer\MyDocLib'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct."     - User Control inside a Web Part Hi, I have created a webpart that loads an ascx control using the command: oEditControl = Page.LoadControl(@"AppMonitor.ascx"); The sharepoint site that I have is not the default web site on the server but I have created the web part library project under the root directory of this site. I have also added the ascx control to the web part library, however when I import the webpart into the Web Part gallery it does not use the copy from the project but rather the copy in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS_new\1033 If I add the web part to a web part page then I get the error: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: C:\<websitename>\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\Template\1033\TISSL\doctemp\smartpgs\AppMonitor.ascx How do I get sharepoint to load the ascx file from the right location?     - How to stop showing members when a office document is opened Whenever I open a document from a document library it always opens up the word document with the task menu to the right of the word document. Is there a way to stop the taskbar from loading all of the members names from the meeting workspace? We don't even have IM so it would be pointless to have this open for users to use. For example; "blood hounds" + "English breed" found in two different directories would not report an eigenSearch result: i.e. "Blood hounds" found in www.smartdogs/hounds and "English Breed" found in. www.smartdogs/hounds/Europe would not be found. EigenSearch therefore searches one tree (peer) level in a site and looks for multiple occurrences of multiple phrases across all documents within this peer level. Corporate products can be tailored to drill down infinite levels for eigenOperator (cross-pollinating operator) matching. eigenSearch single phrase results will find all documents and show the results as independent findings. This way the user can find results across many documents and the combined highly constrained results are reserved for a single level cross pollination. Extremely high (cross-pollinating) eigenValues will correspond to finely granular and refined search explorations. Beta users receive the following features: Login and password Save search constructs for later use in your own personal construct tables EigenOperator (cross Pollinating Operator) advanced features as described above (eigenvector to follow) Database (Table) upload and eigenvector computations EigenSearch seeks 300,000 beta testers for its advanced eigenOperator based cognitive engine. This engine will allow for a multiplicity of search parameters for users to select so as to mathematically narrow results. The system will employ eigenVectors, eigenValues and eigenMatrices to determine relevance to user searches; thereby rendering high fidelity confirmed search results. Naturally the computational power for doing such math is why beta testers are required. Each tester is welcome to comment on user friendliness, speed, change and ergonomic elegance. It is an eigenSearch goal to continue advancing the user interface so as to remain intuitively simple to use while at the same time providing hi-fidelity explorations. All beta testers will receive a login and password, which provides entry into features for saving search constructs and parameters according to their own classification approach.     - outlook doesn't update after restore In the process of testing out the backup and restore of the Sharepoint Services I noticed that whenever I restore a backup, any changes that were made to things such as calendar or contacts do not change in Outlooks 2003's items that were linked to the sharepoint. I tried to refresh the calendar and the contacts in the Outlook, but that didn't help. The only way to see the current changes that were restored after the backup restore in the Outlook was to delete the contacts/calendar items in Outlook and relink them again in the Sharepoint page.     - cannot complete this action I'm getting the infamous "cannot complete this action" error in a console application. It only happens on my production server, which is a web farm setup. I cannot get the simplest example to work. Everything is working fine Sharepoint wise, as are my custom web services. So I don't think it is a server setup issue. The blog referenced below talks about the same error, but this seemed to be in the context of a web app. I actually have the same code working fine in a web app, it's the console application that will not work. http://weblogs.asp.net/dburke/archive/2004/06/09/151660.aspx When use the code below using the string URL to the site, I actually get the error "could not find global configuration data..." I switched this code to use the site's guid from the database and I get the "cannot complete this action..." error.     - beginners question re: documents offline Have SBS2003 and using sharepoint on there all of which works great. Have gotten users set up so that documents all held safely but they can synchronise or go offline which also works great.     - Merging WSS Data Sources I need a list that displays its own data plus data from a Project Server, and it should look like a single WSS list. It would look something like this: Project Name | Phase | Owner | Comments ------------------------------------------ Proj 1 | Test | Fred | Some text Proj 2 | Code | Ted | Text ... The "Project Name" and "Phase" data will come from Project Server, while the "Owner" and "Comments" data will come from a WSS list. Has anyone done anything like this? Any suggestions? My thought is to create a web service that will query Project Server and WSS, and return the merged data as XML. Then I'd have a Data View consume the web service.     - Justifying the more complex use of WSS to store shared documents I originally posted this in .sharepoint.teamservices group, it really belongs here: I find myself in the position of justifying the use of WSS and storing documents through our WSS intranet rather than simply as files on shared directories. Now, I love WSS and the whole integration with .net and SQL server thing, but I am hard pressed to explain how this is the better solution, especially when a simple intranet can be developed with notepad and files in shared folders w/NTFS permissions for *much* less cost. I'm not trolling here, I really need to generate some info for a report to justify the expense and time to upgrade our intranet. Other than being "really cool" for us technoids, what are the solid, substantial benefits? I am likely to post counter-arguments matching those I will have to entertain as I justify the project.     - Link Discussion with List We have setup a list with multiple fileds mostly dates fileds to track our orders through our production flow. So as our work goes through each stage the person performing the work updates his date field or column. 2 things we would like to do are be able to alerts based on changes in a specific column, and als, setup maybe a linked discussion board, the would function in a way that as each person does their part they can add a little note or comment. This is so that anybody can go back and see the whole process evolve, and comments at each stage.     - Is SharePoint Applicable? I am not an expert in SharePoint. I am a real-time, embedded, C programmer. My client has a problem that, in my experience, fits well into a familiar framework (client/server) using list views and dialog boxes. However, there is some external pressure to use SharePoint to solve my client's problem. My client will gather experts to perform a requirements analysis. The steps include: 1. Identify requirements - collaborative effort performed by individuals. 2. Prioritize requirements - private voting with the results recorded by individual. 3. Refine and reprioritize requirements - collaborative effort performed during a group meeting. 4. Identify solutions to the requirements - collaborative effort performed by individuals. 5. Validate solutions - private effort on the part of individual experts. 6. Prioritize solutions - private voting with the results recorded by individual. 7. Refine and reprioritize solutions - collaborative effort performed during a group meeting. Although there appear to be some questions regarding versioning and check out, I can see steps 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 as being within a possible SharePoint solution. However, steps 2 and 6 are not collaborative in nature; they are strictly private and not shared between participants. The results of the voting are recorded by individual and averaged with the resulting average driving the following step. It is this sense of privacy and individuality that raises the issue of SharePoint applicability. Prior to being advised of SharePoint, I was planning to collect individuals' votes from pointer arrays. How to perform the same type of action in SharePoint is beyond my experience. So, to the SharePoint experts who so graciously share their experience in this newsgroup, is SharePoint a reasonable solution to my customer's problem? I have created a new index in the Portal that searchs into the Meeting Site content. When I search in the Portal with the meeting site scope it finds the documents, but if I go to the meeting site and search the same word, its find nothing=A1=A1=A1.     - Cascading filter from querystring Hi, I will try to explain bellow what I am trying to do: I have a web page (project.aspx) with several webparts, that basically are lists (facts, contacts, documents, etc). I would like to provide the id of the project (perhaps in the url itself: http://server/team/projects/project.aspx?project_id=11) and then filter each webpart according to that id, so that I will show only the facts for that project, the contacts for that project and so forth.     - ANOTHER Doc Lib Problem Hi All Have searched all groups, and cannot find the exact match to my problem. I have a client with WSS, and a doc lib with MANY properties.. ie 30, for each document. Problem is around uploading a revised document. They do not have Office 2003, so want to Checkout, download, edit, Checkin. They want to have an option to upload revised doc, keeping all properties formerly entered for the doc, ( or have option for change )..They do not want to create properties with the docs, ie Word Custom, and not all docs are Word.. some Corel, some CAD drawings etc. So, looking for a customised upload.aspx, but linked to existing doc to grab properties already set...make sense ? This is a really show stopper for them. Im thinking I may need to create a custom page, and was hoping that someone had some experience in doing this.     - Need to add additional views to a list template, how? I created a list template with a few views. I then created another list, and realized that I needed several different more view types. I will need these views in all additional lists that I create. I created the additional views in one of the lists, how do I apply this to all the other lists that contain data? Some of these users are reporting problems editing Lists (in Datasheet mode), being unable to open dropdown boxes tat appear when you right-click the item.     - WSS - List Permission Problem Hi I'm using WSS. I've created a form for our staff to fill out using a 'custom list'. I want them to be able to edit their own form but not the forms others complete. I've set Item-level Permissions as; Edit access: only their own. As Contributors i've set their permissions to View List Items Add List Items Edit List Items The problem is - it appears are able to edit the forms of others. How can I prevent this so that they can only edit their own? In the view i've ticked the Edit (link to edit item) - could this be the problem? I have a Sharepoint Team Services site I need to upgrade to WSS. The
Sharepoint Team site is using a MS SQL database server on backend. I know
that I need to use smigrate to backup the STS site and import it to the new
WSS site. Do I point the new WSS server at the existing STS database or do I
create a new database for the WSS site? If I create a new database, do I need
to copy the data from the STS database or is that what smigrate is doing for
me?

smigrate will automatically create the new database for you.
