Does "Edit it with Microsoft xxxx" download file to local disk?
In SharePoint document Library, choose "Edit it with Microsoft Word" on a
.doc file, I now have the file open in Word for editing. Has the file been

Hi,

Recieving SQL Sever errors: ID 2001
When people try to add documents to any WSS document library from outside our
LAN using the external access address http://FQDN/document library, etc..,
the document is never added but I receive an error in the Application log on
the server. Source: SQLFTHNDLR, Event ID: 2001, Description: One or
more documents stored in image columns with extension '' did not get
full-text indexed because loading the filter failed with error '0x1'.
It doesn't matter what type of document they're trying to upload. I can
upload a document from within the LAN however. I've tried everything from
recreating the IIS virtual websites and re-extending them to installing
SharePoint on 2 clean boxes and restoring by either using the built in
backup/restore utility or simply restoring from the SharePoint admin pages.
There is one KB artilce on this that doesn't apply. It is this:

New User Notifications
I'm experiencing flaky activity from SharePoint when adding new users to a
portal.
1. If I add a user who is external to my company (i.e.,
bill@microsoft.com), SharePoint throws the error: "The user or users have
been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail
message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail."
2. If I add a user who is internal to my company, and fully specify an
email address (i.e., bill@mycompany.com), the user is notified via email.
3. If I add a user who is internal to my company, and SharePoint has picked
up their exchage ID (i.e., Jones, Bill), I do not have the same error as in
#1, above, but shortly thereafter, my email server sends me a message that
it attempted to deliver the message to Jones and Bill, but could not resolve
their addresses.
Has anyone encountered this before?

Backup & restore WSS to a different server
Hi,
Hopefully someone will be able to answer my question. Basically I'm in the
process of changing my WSS server. What would be the best way to transfer
all my data (sites, user security, etc) to a new server? I have currently
200 users and I'd like to minimize the overhead. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Personal Themes in WSS?
Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a way to create a personal (private) theme using
WSS?
Our custom theme that is across our deployment apperently is causing
problems for one person. We recently hired a temp that is red/green color
blind and has requested that the site she is a member of be changed to a
different color. We want to be sensitive to her needs, but we also do not
have the luxury of controlling the styles directly and are forced into
consistency.

recursive event handlers
Hi all,
I developed an event handler that updates some metadata for the items
that launched the events.
I suspect WSS to generate new events when I update the metadata from
my event handler, and so to instantiate recursively my event handler.
Is there anybody who could confirm it ? If so, do you have an idea on
how to prevent such behaviour ?

Attn: Fixed it. But can you tell me what caused problem?
My boss was able to use explorer view in WSS for a long time. I had to change
the identity for the application pools but it failed because the new login
did not have permissions on one of the databases. So I reverted back to the
original login for the application pools. After that my bosses explorer view
would not work. Nothing else had been changed. So I found a KB article saying
that if you have SP2 installed on the client and you are running basic
authentication on the server that you have to edit a reg key to fix the
explorer view problem. But we are not using basic authentication but we did
the reg key fix and now his explorer view works fine. What would cause it to
just stop working when all I did was try to change the identity that the

limitations of DLs
Hi,
Somewhere I read that Microsoft recommends not to have more than 1000
documents per folder in a document library. Is there a similar limitation for
folders e.g. not more than 1000 folders per DL?
Does anybody have experiences with huge DLs containing thousends of folders
up to a million documents?

Data View of external Tasks list removes hyperlinks to the items!
Problem:
In Frontpage, when creating a data view in [site A]of a task list of
[site B] by inserting the list from the data source of [site B], the
items in the data view are displayed as text, not as hyperlinks
connected to the items in the source list.
Failing attempt to correct this:
Deleting the text row and inserting the 'subject' row (which are
hyperlinks in the [siteB]) by rightclicking on the subject row or the
source list and instering 'as hyperlinks', results in faulty
hyperlinks, just being the names without the embedded url (page cannot
displayed).
Apparently, this is a design error, but what is the workaround?

HOW TO open jpg files in its associated application not the browser
Hi all,
I have a client that wants to open jpg and gif files in the
application that has been associated to the file extension through
windows.
for example in this instance this particular client uses a special
viewer for zooming in to the images and performing other tasks. It is
webdav compliant, that is, it can open files from a http location.
However, when the users click the jpg, gif and other extensions from
the portal, they seem to be going to a preview mode within internet
explorer.
Is this possible out of the box?. Is there something that i would need
to configure in windows or in sharepoint. I know there is a file in
sharepoint that allows you to specify an application for a file type,
but that is at the server level so that means that every user will get
that by default. I need a solution where each user can decide what
application the file is opened with.
I would appreciate any help.

Issue:
I have users uploading documents from a shared drive using the Documents
option from Quick Launch. When they upload the documnet actually gets copied
over to SHAREPOINT server.
Is there the ability when create a documnets option to specify the path of
where they should reside. This works when creating links and pointing to a
network drive.

Web farm/Load balancing problem
I am having problems getting WSS working properly with load balancing. I
have 2 servers running IIS 6.0 and Windows Server 2003 with network load
balancing and a back-end SQL server machine. I already have 2 static
virtual sites on both servers and that works without problems.
I installed WSS SP1 on server1 with the web farm configuration. Created a
configuration database on the SQL server. Created a new virtual server and
extended it with a new content database. This all works fine.
On server2, I installed WSS SP1 with the web farm configuration. I pointed
it to the configuration database I created earlier. I created a new virtual
server on server2 and extended it with the command
stsadm -o
extendvinwebfarm -url -vsname -apidname -apidtype -apidLogin -apidpwd
where all the values matched the virtual server created on server1.
It seems to have worked and when I go into the Manage Content Databases page
on server 2 it shows the already existing content database and it has the
correct number of sites.
However when I try to connect to the top level site it asks me to
authenticate and then I get a 'Directory listing denied, The virtual
directory does not allow contents to be listed'.
Has anyone else gotten a configuration like this working? Any ideas on what
I have done wrong?

Cross-site links list data view
When I convert a links list to data view and export it, then import it
to another (sub) site, i get error message "list does not exist".
If I try to create a dataview links list in the subsite that gets its
links from the top level site (by adding and connecting the data
source of the subsite, in frontpage), The links are shown in URL
format, the name of the link has gone.
Has anyone an idea how to fix both problems?

I am checking the site collection usage summary on my
site collections and the size it shows in there for the
amount of storage it is using is drasitcally lower than
what is actually being used.
Is this a bug, if so is there a hot fix for this? If this

Good day,
I it possible to link a user's Outlook schedule to WSS? The president of
the company I work for emails his daily schedule to all employees, and I was
thinking that if he just used his Oulook schedule and "post" it to WSS it

page viewer web part - folder view
Hi,
When I choose the folder option of the page viewer web part, I get the
all the files and the sub-folder of the path I choose. How ever when
the users start to browse with -in the page viewr they don't have the
option to go back and they don't see the folder structure.
Is there way to show in the page viewer web part a folder view that is
similar to windows explorer view?

I was able to get the site backed up from the original server but I
have not been able to restore it. I get the below error. I am an
administrator everywhere that I can think to set myself as such.
I have tried the various KB articles about changing your IE settings
but that has not helped. I have also searched around this group for any
new ideas as to why this might be happening but I have not found
anything.

Automatic/programmatic import of Excel Data into list
I have a folder into which a new Excel Sheet is periodically copied.
Once every day I want to import the sheet data into a Sharepoint list.
I know how to do this by hand, convert the data into list form and
publish or merge to a sharepoint list.
But what I need to do is do all this programatically.
I have a sharepoint list and want to merge new data from a normal
Excel List into it. I want to be able to schedule this task to run as
soon as a new sheet is available in the target folder.
Can this be done using the Exel Object model through .Net/C#?
How would I do this?

Problem with lookup fields in DataSheet view
In one of out lists(Lets call it list A) we have a lookup field to
another list(List B) that is version controlled, this is causing
trouble when we're trying to edit List A in the DataSheet view. The
lookup field is populated with every single item of list B even the
ones who are not marked as current. Since there has been quite
extensive editing of list B, the lookup field is now virtually useless
as there are a lot of duplicates in the lookup field. The lookup field
behaves correctly when you edit an item, so I am suspecting this might
be a bug with the DataSheet view. Exporting and linking to excel also
has the same problem.
Is there a workaround for this problem?

Hi, I have been having some problems using conditional formatting to
highlight list entries where an expiry date is at least a month past
in a data view web part.
I have an Expire Date column, which is just a standard Date field in a
sharepoint list, and have used a calculated field to add 30 days to the
Expire Date field, which is used for the condition. I then added a
Conditional Formatting Entry to change the row's background colour
whenever the calculated field is less than or equal to the current
date.
In Frontpage, the proper rows are highlighted and everything looks
fine. However, when I open the page in IE, none of the rows are
highlighted. It seems to only be a problem with the calculated field,
if I modify the Conditional Formatting to use the Expire Date field,
everything works fine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be
causing the issue? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Antivirus info
I got access denied trying to pull up the FAQ on the WSSFAQ site, so I'll
try posting it here:
Am I protected by "local" AV software such as McAfee VirusShield 8.0 that I
have installed on my WSS Server, in terms of files that are up- and
downloaded? I have turned on the Virus Protection checkboxes in WSS Central
Admin, but that is the usual mumbo-jumbo in terms of clear direction from
Microsoft. A link to the "partner" sites is from the online help is likewise

Security error 0xC0000064
For some reason in the last few months every few days a random user will be
prompted for a username / password while trying to access a site or a
document in a WSS site within our SPS portal.
No matter what they put in for a username / password, it won't let them in.
When I check the security event logs of the SPS server, the only failed
event is 0xC0000064.
Has anybody see this before or have any clues?
The network is a stable Win2k3 network with several DC's and GC's so I don't
think this is a network related issue.

Document Lib - Date filtering using "Modified" column in Calc
I am attempting to do this date filtering for a Doc Library.
I can't access the original "Modified" column for calculated formulas.
Sharepoint only allows me to insert columns I have created. The only
workaround I see is to create a new column such as "Date Modified",
whose value is [Today]. Then I could use this column in my calculated
aging column.
Any comments?

Date Filtering - Calculated Column using "Modified" Date
I am attempting to set up a calculated column according to directions
in one of the other postings on this group. (BeginOneWeekAgo =
Modified-7)
The problem is, I can't access the "Modified" column for a calculation,
the only columns I can access are the ones i created. When I use the
name Modified in the formula - Sharepoint gives me an error.
Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

connecting dataview web parts
I have 2 data view web parts that I want to connect. The first web part
displays customer names. Based on the customer name chosen, I want to
populate data in the 2nd web part. This works if the first web part is a
basic table layout. But, I want to do this with a drop-down for the first
web part. There does not seem to be an event fired when a value is chosen
in the drop-down. Is this possible? What has to happen to force the 2nd
web part to refresh?
The data passed between the web parts is a hidden field (not the customer
name, but a customer id). Perhaps this is the problem, it has to be based
on the actual value in the drop-down list? If so, anyone know how to make

SMIGRATE Performance Issues
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I should be monitoring for
WSS performance problems. I backed up a site using SMIGRATE and it took
about 2 minutes. I restored this site to out production server and it took
2.5 hours. However, the same restore took 5 minutes on another machine.
Does anyone know or where I should starting trying to narrow down why this
one machine tasks so long?

rename WSS server instructions
I have a WSS server with MS SQL Server 2000 installed locally. I have to
rename my WSS server due to company reoganization. Current server name is
XYZdept. Need to change to ABCdept. Current URL is http://XYZdept need to
change to http://ABCdept. It appears from other posts that if I change
server name under system properties, I will experience connection problems to
database on WSS. Can someone please advise the best course of action. I
really do not want to break my current site.
