I am wondering if there's any way to accomplish what I would like to do in
SharePoint:.

Our office wants to share folders with 6 remote ompanies.
Each company should only have permission to see their own folders and files.
So I know that we can create 6 document libraries, one for each company's
files and give them the appropriate permissions.

Here's what I think is the difficult part:
Let's say that COMPANY A has DOCUMENT LIBRARY A. EMPLOYEE 1 OF COMPANY A
needs to be given permission to see all FOLDERS A through Z of DOCUMENT
LIBRARY A, but EMPLOYEE 2 OF COMPANY A should only be allowed permission to
see FOLDERS C through F of DOCUMENT LIBRARY A. So, the question is: Is it
possible to restrict folder access within a documen library by user? If not
is there another way to accomplish the same task?

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,

I suspect you already know the answer to this question thus the reason for
creating 6 different libraries instead of just 6 folders.
WSS does not allow security on library or item level as is the case with the
normal Windows file system.
If you have to divide permissions for each company, it might be prudent to
create a WSS site for each and multiple document libraries with the needed
permissions for the users in each company.

On the bright side though, I am told that v3 will have resolved the
permissions granularity issues of v2.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks
C

Thanks Cornelius.

1. Do you know if there is a product that resolves this permission issue? I
know Authentix can work on this level without using NT Authentication. I'm
just wondering if there's something similar to SharePoint.

2. Any idea of when SharePoint 3.0 will be released?

No, v3 is tied to the Office release cycle. The last public statement I saw
about Office was this it was not tied to Longhorn but I might be wrong...

I think we can safely say that at this stage all "when xxxx will be
released" comments are purely speculative and in my opinion it's far too
early to be asking questions like the one that sparked these two replies.

I prefer to wait for a public beta to come out so we can all use that and
get a feel for the product and make our own judgements based on what we see
on how near production it is.

and, no, in case anyone asks I have *no idea* as to in which century a
public beta will come out. (but I'm going for the 21st).

Ian is correct.

Being part of the Office product suite, I would expect SharePoint Portal
Server to be tied to the Office release cycle.
WSS, being part of the operating system, should be, in my mind, tied to the
Windows release cycle.
Given that both those cycles are pretty close together with Windows Server
2003 and Office 2003 in their last release, I would expect there not to be
too much difference in our expected time frames.

Of course my statement releated to the Longhorn timeframe was intended to
indicate that no one really knows when it would be... sort of like Chicago I
guess. :)

Thanks
C
