We have several identical departments.
Is it possible to create a site for them using content filtering (not
several identical sites connected to one page).

Several departments - One site - One content - Filtering (depending on
chosen department)

We've tried to use connected web parts but so far in vain.
Is it possible ???
Thanks in advance.

Use web part pages instead.

You can have one web part page per department containing web parts with
views of the same general data but with the view for that departments
information only.

Problem: there's no security. Once the web part of a document library is
accessible by department B, even if it by default is only showing department
B's information from the doc lib, they could still open the doc lib and see
everyone else's information in that same doc lib.

I.e. you still have to split up your information between document libraries
with security (lowest level of security for WSS).

I second Mike's idea of using web part pages, one for each department.

I had a similar need for downtown neighborhoods website that I set up. I
created a main site and put notices, events, and other categegories of
lists, with flags set to show what neighborhoods should see the items (or an
"all" flag for all to see).

Then I could just move the corresponding web parts to the individual
neighborhood web part pages and use FrontPage to set the filtering so that
each neighborhood only sees the items that it should see.

You can also create things like a general links list with a field called
department and then filter the view of the list on the deparment page. On
the main site, you can then create a view that groups by department.

This all works quite nicely.

One more thing that I forgot to mention in my previous message...

I put the neighborhood web part pages in a document library, with a short
description of each neighborhood. If you use FrontPage to change the
default title of each web part page from "Web Part Page" or whatever to the
name of the neighborhood (or department in your case), then you can use the
lookup function via title in other lists to refer to the neighborhood (or
department). It first brings up the neighborhood name and description and
if you click on the title field, it takes you to the neighborhood web part
page. This gives me another field that I can group on when displaying
lists.
