Deleted WSS Site
I screwed up!!!
While performing maintenance on another virtual server, I
inadvertently deleted a WSS web site in IIS. I still have the
application pool and SQL DB but I need to recover the web portion.
This server was not being backed up since it wasn't "supposed" to be
in production yet but some engineers decided to open it up to external
vendors and put a lot of data on it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Quick Launch Bar and Template question
Ok, as I mentioned in an earlier post, this is my first
day trying to figure out SharePoint, so bear with me if
these are simple questions.
I went through a couple of tutorials that were
recommended to me and I never saw anywhere that mentions
how to edit the launch bar. Yes, I figured out how to
add things, and then delete the things I've added, but
how do you delete the "original" headings like Documents,
Pictures, Lists, Discussions and Surveys? This is going
to be for simple, non-technical users and to many choices
are going to confuse them.
Also, I went to the http://www.wssdemo.com/ and
downloaded some of their templates, in a vain effort to
reverse engineer their sites, and ran into a problem when
I loaded them up. I can see them just fine, but I can't
modify the home page at all. It says that there are
either no web parts on the page or I don't have
permission.
Any help and suggestions is appreciated.

checkin/checkout-Edit Process for non office applications
Hi
how can i edit a non office application in sharepoint 2003.
for eg: i have a crystal report stored in sharepoint. I checked in the file,
then i open the file, it opens in read only mode. (but for office
applications i can go for the "edit in ....." write mode and do the changes
and checkin. that will the save the document.).
how can i handle this in non office applications.
i know there is a work around by choosing the explorer view and edit it and
save.
but is there any other way, the user can see the "edit in crystal report"
(or any non office apps) and to open in write mode in that editor and do the
changes and checkin in browser.
any ideas appreciated.

Problems with linked files, Bug?
I'm continuing to have problems with local versions of .doc files linked to
workspace copies. The link to the workspace sometimes breaks -- not sure
why, but it's no big problem, I can recreate it by opening the workspace
copy, then saving it locally again and choosing the link option after save.
*But* this technique stops working once there are 10 or more files in the
workspace.
For some reason, workspaces with lots of files don't support linked
documents. Has anyone else seen this? Suggestions?

Updates are currently disallowed on GET requests
Hi,
i need some assitance with the following problem. In a webapp, which does
some list manipulation eg. delete i get the following error when calling the
delete or update method of a list, but only when the current user is not an
administrator.
Error : Updates are currently disallowed on GET requests. To allow updates
on a GET, set the 'AllowUnsafeUpdates' property on SPWeb.
As you can see from the below code, I have set the AllowUnsafeUpdates
Property. I don't really belive that this has anything to do with get or
post, but more with access rights..
thanks and regards
karsten
Code:
public bool Delete()
{
this.myWeb.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true;
try
{
foreach (SPListItem item in _srSignatures.Values)
{ // exception is thrown on the first item here..
item.ParentList.Items.DeleteItemById(item.ID);
}
File.Item.ParentList.Items.DeleteItemById(File.Item.ID);
_signRequests.Items.DeleteItemById(_liSignRequest.ID);
}
finally
{
this.myWeb.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
}
return true;
}
The Url to webapp could be the following:
http://mucc23/sites/ECRv2/_layouts/signRequests/DeleteSignRequest.aspx?sr_id=59&returnUrl=http://mucc23/sites/ECRv2/Views/AllSignRequests.aspx

Add web part into web part page dynamically
Hi,
I have a set of web parts (runat server) and I want only one web part
to sit on my web part page at one time according to user's selection.
I have made a master web part whose UI is like this: a dropdown list
which contains items such as Web part 1, Web part 2, .... When the
selected index changes, the previous web part will be deleted from the
page and the selected web part will be added into the page.
I have tried to use the WebPartPagesWebService to add the selected web
part into my page. Below is a code snippet I have for this:
====================================================================
Sub AddSelectedWebParts(ByVal selectedWebPartXMLFileName As String)
'get the current
Dim curWeb As SPWeb = SPControl.GetContextWeb(context)
Dim curPageUrl As String = curWeb.Url
Dim webpartXML As String =
LoadFile(selectedWebPartXMLFileName)
Dim svc As New mySharepointServer.WebPartPagesWebService
Dim credentail As New
NetworkCredential(Me._sImpersonateLoginName, Me._sImpersonateLoginPWD)
svc.Credentials = New
NetworkCredential(_sImpersonateLoginName, _sImpersonateLoginPWD, "AD")
Dim newPartID As Guid = svc.AddWebPart(curPageUrl, webpartXML,
mySharepointServer.Storage.Shared)
End Sub
here, the body of selectedWebPartXMLFileName is the file I export from
the corresponding web part.
But each time svc.AddWebPart is executed, I get exception. The message
is:

List Temoplate without Title
We are attempting to fill a Scheduling requirement
(First off - I know this might better be done in Outlook, but that is
another tack all together)
We wan a list wher e a user can add an item by selecting theirself from a
lookup of from another list of staff
there would be one date column and a choice column where they could specify
if they are on vacation , phone duty or an out of office assignment
ideally we could connect the out of office assignment entry to a list of
assignments
My problem is that every list template has a primary column of Title.
I want this to be a lookup but Title is a single line of text
Can I create a list or template with a lookup as the primary item,
I would want this to be the value which shows up in a Calendar view
And I dont want the slingle line of text Title at all. Tag: Site Collection User Information Question Tag: 19831

Windows 2000 Professional Cannot Access SharePoint via UNC
Good day,
We have installed WSS 2003 SP1 on Windows Server 2003.
We created a host header 'websitename' so that users do not have to access
the site via the 'servername.' The servername and the websitename are not the
same. An 'A' record has been created in DNS pointing both servername and
websitename to the same IP address.
We can access a document library via the UNC path, i.e.
\\website\libraryname. All Windows XP machines can access the share. However,
all Windows 2000 Professional machines cannot access the share, returning an
"invalid network path" error.
The same user can login to a Windows XP machine and see the share; yet,
the same user cannot see the share from a Windows 2000 Professional machine.
All users and machines can see the document library via
http://website/libraryname.
All of the client machines have Office 2003 installed.
Is this a known issue, isolated to Windows 2000 Professional? Is there a
fix or a work-around available?

App Root Authentication on Paths Below Virtual Server
I have an App Root below the Sharepoint Virtual Server. I have added the
App Root's path to the Excluded Paths list in the Managed Paths setup. I
have also changed the trust level to "Full" in the App Root's web.config as
well as added the .aspx httpHandlers entry required to get the pages to
work. General ASP.Net pages seem to work, but the one thing that does not
appear to work is the Forms Authentication defined in the App Root's
web.config. Basically it doesn't get enforced redirecting the user to the
login page. My guess is that the sharepoint domain authentication is
somehow causing the App Root to believe its already authenticated but that
is just a guess.
I understand that I can install sharepoint somewhere else on the same
server, but I would rather keep this structure. Is this possible or is the
SharePoint domain authentication going to override the app root regardless
of configuration?

Hi,
I have built a web part page with an XSLT DataView, I have put in an linkt

doese'nt work because the source parameter dose'nt work if the special

How to turn off authentication in an unmanaged folder?
I've got a WSS site with a couple unmanaged folders containing ASP.NET
applications. In one of those folders I want to allow anonymous users to
open an XML file from Excel, but when they try they get prompted for a
username/password.
The file is at:
http://www.usingsharepoint.com/excel/excelobjects.xml
I assume the problem is occurring because Excel requests read/write access
when it opens the file and somehow WSS is intercepting that request even
though the /excel folder is excluded from WSS management.
I tried changing web.config in /excel, but no luck. I also tried changing
the authentication settings in IIS for the /excel app.
This used to work back when the root site was plain ASP.NET. I thought
excluding the path would make requests act that way again. Is this a bug?

FP2003 and Windows XP?
Hi.... maybe a silly question, but I can't find the answer on the web or in
the WSS FAQ.
I have a dev server running Windows Server 2003 and FrontPage 2003. I can
open and modify WSS sites without any problem.
On my laptop, I am running Windows XP and FrontPage 2003. I can open a WSS
site in FrontPage, but I cannot do things like convert data views to XSLT
views, and other functionality seems to be limited. Is there any way to
configure XP/FP2003 to allow full-functionality editing of WSS sites?
Thanks in advance,

signup page in extranet
Hello
I have Sharepoint Services setup in Active Directory Creation Mode. I now
want users from the Internet to be able to set themselves up into sharepoint,
similar to sharepointsite.com.
Are there any tools / pages that exsist to do something like this? I have an
asp page that can create users in the AD, but I would like something more
specific like sharepointsite, where you have to register and then sharepoint
works out the username and password and e-mails all the details. There must
be something available surely?!
Thanks :) Tag: Site Collection User Information Question Tag: 19740
Inconsistent returns from spcontrol when requesting view
I have coded up a web part to access a list based on a view within the users
context.
variable
_reportList = list name
SourceView = view name
Sample code:
Dim myWeb As SPWeb = SPControl.GetContextWeb(Context)
Dim srcList As SPList = myWeb.Lists(_reportList)
Dim srcViewGuid As Guid = srcList.Views(SourceView).ID
Dim srcView As SPView = srcList.GetView(srcViewGuid)
When this code is executed against a new list it returns the views query and
the correct columns.
When this code is executed against a list that was created by the same user
over 2 months ago it keeps returning a set of columns that do not match any
defined view and a query that does not seem to be defined in any view
anywhere.
Any ideas why I can't seem to get the correct view on older views using the
above code?
Any help would be appreciated.

Warning: massively high French price on web part book
I've just updated the information on the WSS FAQ sites for the book "The
Rational Guide to Building SharePoint Web Parts" by Darrin Bishop.
If you are in France and thinking about buying this book, do not buy it from
Amazon France who are selling it for ? 64.95 (almost 80 US dollars) but from
Amazon UK who have it at £ 7.52. (The US price is slightly more expensive at
$ 14.99)
[all figures from today - 1st November 2004]
The UK site is:

Reader rights and Explorer view on doclibs
We've just discovered that if you have a document library and someone with
Reader rights tries to access that doclib, they can only retrieve the
document if they access it through the web view. If they switch to Explorer
view, they are denied access.
Further testing seems to show that they must have Contributor rights. My
initial thoughts were that this was because Word wants to create a temporary
file where the document has come from but this problem also occurs if you
try to COPY the file from the Explorer view to, say, your Desktop.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a solution other than
granting Contributor rights?
This is with Service Pack 1 for WSS installed.

When a user hits a WSS site for the first time, and it creates the user
information entry, where does it get the data from?
