Is it possible to share a Custom List or one of the default lists (i.e.
Announcements, Events, etc.) with child Sites of a WSS Site?

Thanks much,
JD

It depends what you mean by sharing. You can get it on another site (or
sub-site) by using FP 2003 Data View to access the list (or the database if
on another server) but then the resulting web part is display only.

I see that you have also posted this message to the subnewsgroup for WSS
Programming.

Please do not post identical messages to both newsgroup but decide which of
the two newsgroups is most suitable for your question and post it to that
one only.

By posting it to two newsgroups you possibly have two groups of people
answering it leading to a situation where your question has already been
answered in one newsgroup while people in the other newsgroup are spending
time answering it again.

Please help us all by keeping up the clear split between the two newsgroups.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

What I am trying to do is store additional informaton about WSS-site users
in a Custom List... "User Profiles" if you will. I am aware that SPS
supports User Profiles -- but that functionality is not available to me on
this project -- we must use WSS. With all the User Profile information
centrally stored on the top-level WSS site, I'd like to allow Users to edit
their own information from their own Personal Site (which I also create
manually -- again to simulate features SPS provides that WSS does not
provide).

I have been able to achieve some success with the DataView Web Part in
FrontPage 2003: I can supply a read-only, filterable, sortable table based on
the Custom List in another site in the Site Collection. This is read-only,
though so it doesn't satisfy my requirements.

Let me know if this makes sense. Any suggestions would be appreciated --
including 3rd party products.

BTW, I posted to both lists because I was not certain which list was more
appropriate. It appears since we are not yet dealing with coding this
newsgroup is more appropriate. While I understand your concern about keeping
the newsgroups clean, please remember that many of us use newgroups to solve
business critical problems for which we have no other resource. On more than
one occaison, I've posted to a single list (what I thought was the "correct
list") and received an abrupt reply that I was in the wrong list -- without
an answer to my question or even a suggestion as to which list I was supposed
to post. That sort of reponse can cause you to lose a day or more working on
a problem -- many of us cannot afford that! I've learned to hedge my bet by
posting to multiple newsgroups. Now that I know I'm in the right newsgroup
for this problem, I will not post to any other newsgroups.

Thanks,
JD

Yes, this is what I meant by display only in my message.

I don't have any specific web parts etc. that I *know* for sure will offer
the ability to edit etc. in a different site, but you might have a look at
the web parts from Coras Works as they seem to have worked hard to provide
things I've not seen elsewhere.

(I have no links with CorasWorks - I once long ago had an on-line demo of
some web parts they had then and they seem to have added functionality since
then.)

(Final para noted and as I have questions myself I *want* answers for NOW
understood. Thanks for your understanding.)
