    - Create 'new document' in Visual Studio in document library Hi, I customized a document library to list UserControls that developers add to the site. I'd like to take advantage of the 'New Document' functionality to open up a template in Visual Studio. I didn't find enough document online; the only thing I could find says create a dll that will load the correct control. I really need some insight in this regards on how to do this task. My 2nd question: is there a way to restrict the types of files that can be uploaded? In the above example, I'd like to restrict my library to .ascx files. And the last question: how can I customize the menu that displays when you click on the down arrow for an upload file?     - How to disable caching for SharePoint Hi, I've been trying to create list definitions and adding them to the onet.xml for the corresponding site. It takes forever for the customization to appear. I disabled caching in the Web.config but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. Is there somewhere where I can disable that (at least temporarily)?     - Document Upload Problem I'm running SBS 2003. Its comes with a canned intranet site, http://companyweb, that I believe is a Sharepoint service. I created a slide show in Powerpoint and saved it as a .htm file. I uploaded the .htm file to http://companyweb where it appears on a document list. However when you try to open the file you get the IE page not found error, http404. Not all of my users have Powerpoint, otherwise I would just upload the native Powerpoint file - that works fine. It was suggested that I just give my users a link to download the Powerpoint viewer, but I encourage my users not to download and install software and not all of them have admin rights anyway, so that solution is problematic. What am I doing wrong? The sample presentation that comes with the companyweb site suggests saving the Powerpoint file as a .htm so that everyone can open it.     - Extening WSS site fails... says already extended I successfully extended a WSS site (foo.domain.com). However we had some issues and had to remove it completely so we did so through the Central Admin. I then, to be safe, deleted the virutal server and made sure the database was gone from the SQL server. Then we recreated the virtual server in IIS and went to extend the new site (same domain) but got the following error: The configuration database shows that the virtual server has been extended already. To extend this virtual server, click "Extend and map to another virtual server" in the Provisioning Options section of the Extend Virtual Server page. So I went in and checked and sure enough, in the Virtual Servers table and Sites table in the config database I see entries of our site. Looks like SharePoint didn't clean everything up.     - Is it possible to link a filtered contact list of WSS to outlook Hi newsgroup, I made some filtered views of my contact list. This should be a trick to get several lists filtered by company status or business branche. Now I like to link these filtered lists to my Outlook with the special javaskript link offered at the top of these lists in WSS. (It´s called link contacts to Outlook) If I click the link, always ".../Allitems.aspx" is used for linking, so no one of my views with my filters is recognized.     - Adding Web Part Zone to default.aspx in Site Definition Having difficulty adding a new web part zone to default.aspx in a custom site definition. We're trying to put the image web part in place of the home logo that is above the Quick Launch nav. The <form> and </form> tags have both been moved next to the opening and closing <body> tags in the page, and appear to be balanced. However, when the a site is generated from the template, the follwoing error appears: ************************* An unexpected error has occurred.     - Error message when copying files to Sharepoint Services During my transfer process from a windows directory to Sharepoint Services I came upon an issue on the two client XP workstations that I was using to perform the transfers. If you receive the error "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service" while trying to copy a file from a network location to Sharepoint perform the following: 1) Unhide system folders and files 2) Delete the temporary files from: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 - This is probably gigs of information. 3) Reboot the computer and go into safe mode with the command prompt. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and delete index.dat. 4) Reboot computer Obviously there is a flaw in XP that this temporary location is not emptied nor is the dat file cleaned after a copy process to Sharepoint (or SQL).     - Form field losing data I have a user that has created a form on his subweb. When he enters data into a specific field in the form (Detailed Requirement) the system loses it. ie. he saves and goes back in and that specific text box is now empty.     - Edit an save TIF and PDF files Hello I am trying to open tif oder pdf document from a DL and save (not "save as") it to the DL. This doesn't seem to work in all applications except standard office apps (Word 2003, Excel 2003 etc). It even doesnt work in Office Document Imaging. I find some posting about editing docicon.xml and adding an appropriate OpenControl. But I couldn't find the right Control for Office Document Imaging or Acrobat. <Mapping Key="tif" Value="ictif.gif" EditText="Office Document Imaging" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments" /> SharePoint.OpenDocuments doesn't work with these applications.     - Convert characters Hi. I've tried to make this somehow but I can't seem to make all work. Here's the story. I want to convert all c, s, z to c, s, z. I've managed to make this with formula REPLACE([Column_name], SEARCH("c",[Column_name]),1,"c") But this works only for ONE character. Probably I can repeat it for others s, z. But what if there are more same characters in one word? For example cc would be converted only to cc. But i'd need it translated to cc. Can anybody help me?     - filename contains characters that are not permitted When importing files, I've noticed several of the following error messages... "An error occurred copying some or all of the selected files." When I tracked down one of these, it then says the filename "contains characters that aren ot permitted. Please use different name," even tho' it doesn't appear to have anything strange. I end up renaming the file to my desktop then uploading it successfully. Anyone have this problem and know what's going on? It seems to be on older files but I haven't completely verified this.     - Programmatically READ List Permissions I want to be able to programmatically read a permission mask and determine if certain permissions are contained within the permission mask. I am looking for a sample script that can be used within a VB.NET/C# application for uploading documents to a specific folder within a document library. Specifically, I have several reports that are generated daily.     - Adding users to a site under Windows sharepoint services Hi All, This is the situation that I'm seeing and wondered if anyone else has experienced similar behaviour. I create a new sharepoint site by doing the following: create --> Sites and workspaces. I add a site title and description and a web site address. I then set the permissions to be unique. and click create. (the site is created correctly using a blank template) I then want to add new users, so I do the following: Site Settings --> Manage users --> Add Users. for most users, the "Confirm Users" section provides me with three sets of information. namely: an e-mail address (non editable) User Name (editable) Display Name (editable) This is fine. Now comes the problem! I have a particular user in active directory which I add to the site and when I type her details, I end up with the above fields as follows: an e-mail address (non editable) User Name (non editable) Display Name (non editable) note that the user Name and Display name become non-editable. Can anyone explain to me why this is happening? I confirm the details and the user is added with her "Married" name (this is based on her e-mail address) I suspect that the problem might be due to the setup of the user in active directory, but I can't sure. My colleague on the other hand follows the same procedure on his machine. the fields in question are all editable, but the user is added with her "Maiden" name. Strange behaviour!     - Password Changes failing for non-admins Users on my WSS install can change their own password if they are an admin in the subweb they are logged into. However, if they are not an admin, the password change fails. Basically, any time the user is prompted to enter their original password, then the new password, the change doesn't take ("Error changing password").     - Dynamic Menus in Lists I would like to create a list that has a menu with choices, I would then like to have fields on the lower part of the newform.aspx display based on what choice you've selected. I've looked into inserting data web components and have created multiple lists that I would like to tie in to this but I want each list to display on the form based on what is chosen in the selection menu. The whole scenario is we're working on a Help system to handle desktop support, facilities, phone, network, and other issues/departments. I want to gather the person's name, location, desciption, and problem area. Then from problem area I want additional fields to display based on what is chosen. For instance if you select phone from the menu additional fields will display with inputs for old jack#, new jack#, d.i.d, ect... I wouldn't mind creating this lists seperately and then applying a rule/conditional format that states to only display each list when a certain selection is made. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I don't mind digging into a little code but I hope it's not necessary considering the abundance of Sharepoint.     - Connection Timeout problem Iâ??m new to WSS and need some help. I have a Small Business Server with a WSS site shared through the IAS firewall to the internet. From the internet I can access picture libraries fairly consistently on the published site. (Some very large pictures time out.)     - 9 things I hate about SharePoint Services Don't get me wrong, I really like Windows SharePoint Services, but like any version 1 product, there's plenty of room for improvement. (I hope the Microsoft guys are listening, because these are things I'd really like to see them address in the near future.) These are things that deal directly with the user experience in WSS and not administration or extensibility. 9. No Gant charts. It would be really nice to be able to create a Gant Chart view of a task list. That functionality would allow better project management. 8. Discussions lists. There's nothing more annoying than attempting to read a discussion thread that is deep. You click on a post to read it and then when you use the back button to return to the main list, everything has collapsed and scrolled to the top. It would be nice if I could at least click on the deepest post and see all of the posts back to the root. 7. No support for summary tasks. I realize that this is venturing into MS Project territory, but if we're going to pretend to use SharePoint in project planning, let's do it right. 6. No support for calendars based on calculated dates. This isn't as big as some of my other items, but it is something that I have found annoying. 5. No granularity in Alerts. There's nothing less useful than an alert that tells me a task item has changed without any indication of what has changed in that item. Along those lines, I'd also like to have the ablility to set up an alert that is only triggered when the status of a given item changes. 4. No personal default view. Each list has a default view that is set by an admin or web designer. It would be nice if a site user could set a different view as their own default so that when they visit the list, they see what they want, not what the web designer fealt was an appropriate default view for the masses. For example, in a task list, a developer probably wants to see "My Tasks", not everyone's tasks. 3. No item change history. It would be very nice if I could turn on a change history for items in a given list. This would allow for a better post-mordem look at what went well or not-so-well on a project. 2. No support for lists of items within a list item. For example, I can add a Hyperlink column to a list item, but I'd like to be able to add a list of hyperlinks to a list item. Why can't I simply designate an Exchange group and add additional metadata about those users (e.g, add roles for each user.) Likewise, why can't I connect a SharePoint object to an Exchange public calendar? Then updates in one place would appear in the other. This would be nice for users who use SharePoint sites behind a corporate firewall but have access to the Exchange server through Outlook Web Access... no need to create the VPN connection to lookup something in the calendar. It would also allow the roadwarrior with Outlook 2003 to effectively take the calendar with them on the road because of Outlook's local caching. There's some other potential integration points that would be really nice, like integration with an MS Project Server installation or the up-and-coming Visual Studio 2005 Team Services server.     - Virtual server error - no server in the configuration database? I have WSS and SPS. The site is working great, but when i try to configurate my virtual server(for example change maximum file upload), i get error this error message: "The virtual server that is refered to, can not be found in the configuration database(translated from Norwegian)" When i go to "Virtual server general settings", i get this error. But if i go to "manage user rights for the virtual server", at the SAME server. It works?? I did not set up the server, so im right now learning SPS/WSS, but started in the wrong end i guess;).     - Smigrate error Hello, I'm attempting to migrate 2001 Team Services (without portal) to WSS WITH portal. I successfully used Smigrate to backup the data. I have around 60 backup#.fwp files ready to load into WSS with portal. When I attempt to load them I get the following error message. Progress: Finished open service http://blahblah Progress: manifest.xml not found within cabinet Progress: unable to deploy package: unable to locate manifest file I searched the harddrive and indeed there is not a manifest.xml file on the new server. document library I get an Error message that
states "Cannot complete this action. Please try again.
If this problem persists, please contact your
administrator." How can I fix this?
