Multiple line field in Document Libraries
I have noticed a difference in behavior between the
multiple line fields of a document library andother
lists. In a document library, I am not allowed to save a
record which has more then 255 characters of text in a
multi line field. I have tried this on several document
libraries on multiple servers. There seems to be no
limit in the amount of text you can have in a multiple
line field in other types of lists.
I have also noticed that when adding or modifying a
multiple line field in a document library, there is no
choice to allow rich text editing. That choice exists in
the properties in other lists.
Can anyone confirm this behavior, and explain why there
is this limit? I want to enable users the ability add
their comments on a particular document, and this will
severely limit that ability.
Thanks

Links in new window, and Mess. status
Hi,
I have two questions:
I want to make that all those links which navigates away from the portal
would open in a new window -- so for example the "Links" list items would
open in a new window. Is that possible?
And the other one:
How can I put the Messenger online status next to someone's e-mail addredd
in a Contacts list (I want the same thing as it is with the "Modified by"
things, but in a contactlist)?
If you know answer for at least one of my questions, please let me know.
Thanks,

Data View Web Part Caching
I'm using the dataview webpart to display RSS feeds. It works
beautifully, but I'd like to know what the cache options actually do.
I have it set to "Default" in the Miscellaneous section of the options
for the web part and the cache time-out setting is 0 by default.
What does this mean in practice? .... is the server downloading the
RSS file every time the page is requested, or does it mean something
else......
Also, I can't open pages with these webparts in Frontpage 2003 ("A web
part or web form control on this web part page cannot be displayed or
imported because it is not registered as safe on this site...." etc)
Is there any documentation on this?

Installing DC after WSS has been installed means trouble ?
Hello people,
First of all: a very happy 2004 to you all !
Now, I had a Windows 2003 server installed with WSS on SQL 2000 working just
fine (all on the same machine, together with IIS). For some specific
reasons, I had to upgrade the machine and install active directory (make it
a DC) at a later stage. This installation has "broken down" my WSS and I am
having some trouble to get it back on line.
I first got the "Service Unavailable" errors and cured this by selecting the
right application pool on the virtual server in IIS (why was this changed
during the DC-installation ?).
However, once I go to my WSS home page, I always get a "You are not
authorized to view this page" error, even if I'm loged on as the
administrator on the server itself.
I think the connection between WSS and SQL or at least the rights of the
account that connects to the SQL-server got messed up somewhere along the
road, since the initial settings in the "set configuration database server"
of my WSS administration pages now gives me an "create database permission
denied" error.
I think I should be able to solve this by adding an account to the SQL WSS
database (NT Authority/Network account ?) and set the correct rights to it,
but I don't want to mess around with this before I'm sure. Also, if this is
the case indeed, why do I need to do this ? Should I had the DC installed
before installing SQL/WSS/DC/IIS ?
If so, what would be the best thing to get this up-and-running ? I have no
problem re-installing one of the above applications it this solves the
problem, rather than messing around with accounts and maybe forgetting a
couple of settings...
Many thanks in advance for your advice !

Benoit. Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 3100
reinstating mssql$sharepoint service
I still have the problem from my original post (12/31/03 - can't
connect to configuration database), and I'm wondering if (part of?)
the problem is that I don't have the mssql$sharepoint service
installed.
However - If I attempt to reinstall msde, I get an invalid instance
name error. I know that I can specify the instance name on the
command line, but when I run setup with INSTANCENAME=SHAREPOINT, setup
runs *almost* to completion, then silently fails. The application
logs just say that installation failed with no additional information.
Am I on the right path here. I've done nothing but read articles and
try various things out for the last day and a half, but I'm no closer
now than I was when I got into this mess.
I'm installing sql server 2000 sp3 on this machine now, because I've
tried everything else I can think of, and I'm hoping that will give me
some more options.
If anyone missed my original post, here's the summary:
1) Sharepoint was working great
2) I accidentally uninstalled msde
3) I tried reinstalling sharepoint (choosing repair)
4) Access requests result in "configuration database not found)
The database is still there - I just don't know how to get them
connected. If I attempt to access the server through the sharepoint
admin site, I get an error that "the virtual server referenced here is
not in the configuration database" - but I don't know how to get it
there, nor do I know if it's the same or different problem. Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 3097

Can't connect to configuration database on reinstall
I was pointed here from the sts group. I debated titling this post
"I'm an idiot" - because I sure feel like one.
I was removing some old software from a server today, and accidentally
uninstalled msde (I meant to select the item above msde in add/remove
programs - feel free to make fun of me now).
At that point, I probably *should* have just reinstalled msde, but I
didn't
notice the separate installation directory on the cd (this is sts 2.0
on
server 2003). I reinstalled sharepoint, but now when I attempt to
connect
to the server, I get a "can't connect to configuration database"
error. If
I launch the administration pages on the server, and attempt to access
the
configuration pages for this virtual server, the config page can't be
found.
I've verified that the application pool is set properly in the IIS
configuration for this web site, and I've also verified that the
database it
*should* be connecting to still exists.
I'm willing to try anything to get this server back up. It's
frustrating,
because I think it shouldn't be that difficult...
If it will help at all, I have an unused copy of SQL Server 2000
enterprise
that I could install if the tools included with SQL would help me out.

Using text formula in default value for a field
Hello:
I can't seem to figure out how to set up a text field so
that the default value (for new records) is a concatenation
of other fields in the same record.
In this case, I have a single-line text field called "Full
Name," and three other single-line text fields called
"First Name," "Last Name" and "Honorific".
According to the online help that comes up when I click the
"Show more information" link on the Change Column page, I
should be able to enter as a "Calculated (default) Value" a
formula such as:
=[Honorific]&" "&[First Name]&" "&[Last Name]
and have WSS enter "Dr. Victor Zhivago" in the Full Name
field after I type in "Dr.", "Victor", and "Zhivago" in the
other fields.
But in fact, when I enter that formula, WSS returns the error:
The formula contains reference(s) to field(s).
Well, duh. I encounter similar problems when trying to use
date formulas to create calculated default values.
So WSS seems to evaluate functions involving other fields
correctly if the target field is of type "Calculated Value"
but it does not do so to create a default value for a
target field that can be edited. Or am I missing something?
Editing the properties of the list in Frontpage2003 doesn't
work either.
Am I missing something? Any suggestions?

Solution Accelerator for Recruiting
Hi,
I am having a problem (a few, actually) with the Solution Accelerator for

you direct me to the right one?
My first problem is that I have installed the pilot and are in the testing
steps of the documentation. In planning for an interview, I get prompted
for user name/password and then a "You are not authorized to view this page"
error when I try to plan an interview. I have tried the following

- grant all domain users permissions on the Interview_Data form
- grant all domain users permissions on the equivalent inetpub\wwwroot
folder
- grant all domain users permissions on the \Program Files\Microsoft

Components\Web Services folder
- if i enable anonymous access on the recruiting web (equivalent to

Any ideas as to why my installation is failing?

Info - the remit of this newsgroup
[Given the occasional question here that is not covered by the remit of this
newsgroup, it seems important to spell it out occasionally. This is the
first attempt.].
This is the newsgroup for standalone Windows SharePoint Services (WSS).
That's its main function.
The products SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) 2003; Project Server 2003 and
Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 (both editions) also include a WSS
"element".
(In the case of SPS 2003 this WSS element is a lower layer of the product.
In the case of both Project Server 2003 and SBS 2003 this is an
implementation of the WSS product itself which is installed in addition to
the other product(s) in the package.)
As most of the functionality of WSS is common between all four products
mentioned above, it is sensible that discussion on those common functions
take place here to avoid having parallel threads happening over several
newsgroups. The "common" functions are those functions that are supplied
with standalone WSS.
Note - "Discussion on those *common* functions!" ONLY.
What should not be discussed here are matters that require that particular
product (SPS 2003; Project Server 2003; SBS 2003) to be present as these
then do not fall under the "common functions" banner.
These include for all three products *installation questions* and -
for SPS 2003: web parts that are only supplied with SPS 2003 and not with
standalone WSS; anything to do with the top layer such as My Site; Areas
etc.
for Project Server 2003: any special web parts supplied only with Project
Server 2003; and special list types provided in the Project Server 2003
implementation of WSS.
for SBS 2003: any special web parts supplied only with SBS 2003 (possibly
there are none); and special list types provided in the SBS 2003
implementation of WSS (such as the Fax Library).
Please try to follow the above guidelines when deciding whether to post to
this newsgroup or whether it is best to post to the Product's own newsgroup.
Please do not multi-post - people running standalone WSS do not want "their"
newsgroup filled with threads that have no relevance to standalone WSS.

of your WSS sites? Anyone have to deal with this? Is it
even possible to restore from databases? I've tried
creating a new site, and restoring the database, but it
does not work. TIA. Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 2968

Small Business Server 2003 issues?
I'm interested in installing WSS on a Small Business Server 2003
platform and hope to identify any issues that may be of concern.
Does anybody have any comments related to WSS on SBS?

Lookup column limit
Is there any way to change the maximum number of lookup
columns allowed in a list? We've gotten up to 16 but can't
create any more. This is the error we receive: "There are
too many columns of the specified data type. Please delete
some other columns first. Note that some column types like
numbers and currency use the same data type." Is this a
problem in SPS 2003? Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 2961
Connecting a Web Part in the Display Form
I'm looking to add a web part to my list display form (dispform.aspx) that
shows related records in another list. The related records are designated
using a lookup field. When I add the part to the page however, it doesn't
seem to enable me to add a connection to the existing display form fields.
Is there any way of getting this scenario to work? It would make for a
fantastic master/detail view.
Thanks!

Link to Outlook button is not there
I am trying to link my events calendar in Sharepoint to my Outlook
calendars. I've done this on several other machines but have a
machine that does not have the "Link To Outlook" link available. I've
looked at the site configurations and don't see anything that allows
me to show or not show this option. Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 2949
Problems deleting/adding users
I have several users that I deleted from my wss site. These
users were deleted from WSS and AD. I now need to re-add
them. When I add the users thru the add users wizard - it
does not show the checkbox option that wss is sending the
user a password, it does send the email saying you have
been added. When I try to change the users pwd in WSS -
it says "user does not exist" I see the users listed
under "manage users". I have also tried to manually add
the users to AD, still no luck. New users, users who have
never been invited to the site, receive the email with pwd
and user name and can log in fine. They are also added to
the ad with no problem. Has anyone else ran into this? Any
feed back or suggestions greatly appreciated. Tag: SharePoint installation can put Exchange at risk Tag: 2946
fax viewer
I'm having a problem viewing incomeing faxes.
Faxes are being stored ok in the incoming faxes library. If I use internet
explorer from the server then clicking on the fax brings up an image ok.
However... When I try to do the same from my XP workstation I just get a
picture symbol but no image. I have no idea what setting I have changed to
give this behaviour. Any ideas.

Printing problem with DispForm.aspx after FP 2003 amendment
I've discovered what seems to be a printing problem with amendments made to
DispForm.aspx in FP 2003.
Just as I used to do in STS v1.0, I amended the DispForm.aspx file in FP
2003 so that the main (multirow) text field of this custom form was
(coloured; larger; and) filling just as wide a part of the screen before
wrapping that would allow the text to be printed without any letters/words
being dropped.
In STS v1.0 this worked fine.
In WSS printing this text (in IE 6.0) ignored my pre-made line endings and
thus missed a couple of words per line.
I then went back and made the entire screen narrower (rather than just the
fields with data) including moving the "Back to the team site" text to the
left. I then refreshed and printed again.
On screen, the WSS page is narrower; but the printout of the page has
exactly the same number of characters printed (and the same number of
characters missing) as with the standard screen size and just field length
adjustments.
------------
Now when the page has not been amended in FP 2003 and the screen page is far
too wide to be printed in A4 as is, wordwrap comes into play and the screen
is printed just fine (with even some white space at the right).
Odd, very odd ....

Info - WSS KB Articles from 22nd to 29th December 2003
Here is the weekly roundup of all the KB Articles I could find from the past

As always with the rider that while these articles were available and
relevant when I checked them a few months ago, Microsoft can at any time
withdraw them or change their addresses. (This actually happened with one
recently).

Import Spreadsheet (Excel)
Hello,
I am using WSS v2 on Windows 2003 Server. When I try to create a Custom
Lists via Import Spreadsheet I get an error message "Can not connect to the
server at this time. Your list has not been published". I am on a LAN no
firewalls and the sharepoint server is on the same subnet. The site is
published on port 80. Has anyone ever run into this? I am running excel
2003. When Excel connects to Sharepoint is it trying to connect to the
database directly? Can anyone shed some light on how this feature works?
Thanks,
