SharePoint Portal Search

I would like to know if it would be possible to use SharePoint Portal
Services to index and search for folders across different non-SharePoint
Servers. We have a number of File Servers distributed in remote sites and
would like to have a way of indexing and easily searching for
folders/documents and we are hoping that SharePoint Portal can do that.

If you post it to the SPS newsgroup they might

(microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver)

This is the WSS newsgroup and WSS doesn't include the SharePoint Portal
Search you are asking about.

(So it's not really surprising you didn't get a reply - anyway 2 and 1/2
hours later is far too early to repeat a request for a reply. If you want
that sort of turnaround ask Microsoft (paid) support)

And the answer is yes - Portal Server can index file shares.
