We have 3 servers that we are running Windows Sharepoint Services and/or
Portal (2003) on. This scenerio happens on all of them.

On restart - we get the "service unavailable" from Sharepoint Portal 2003
website.
Log events show a failure to login (see below).
IIS's CentralAdminAppPool is running, but MSSharePointPortalAppPool is
stopped.
Manually starting MSSharePointPortalAppPool starts the website running again.
DNS Servers are running Win2K.

Anyone know what might be causing the login failure and how we can fix it?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Had exactly the same problem last week....
This happened to us after the password was changed for the sharepointnapp
pool.
If your apppool identity is set to a network service change it to a domain
account that is a member of admins.
If it is not a network service identity then set it to a network identity,
restart iis and then set it back to a normal account.

hope this helps

Please in future post SharePoint Portal Server 2003 questions to the SPS
newsgroup at

microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver

This WSS newsgroup is only for problems which can occur in any
implementation of WSS.

In this case you are clearly complaining about getting service unavailable
from a **SPS 2003* web site so the question goes there not here.

Mike,
I'm sorry I mis-typed with my reference that I get the message "from the
Shareoint Portal 2003 website". This error happens on the server that is
running only WSS as well as the ones with portal. I went through the MSDN
Managed Groups interface and I could not find the site for Portal (besides
development), so I took a shot. I hope it didn't sound like I was
complaining; I'm just asking for help. I will be more careful with my
postings next time.

Dave, thanks for responding. We are give it a shot today.

Thanks,

Anne-Marie

I didn't read any complaint into anything.

Sorry about jumping in perhaps too quickly with the SPS 2003 re-direct.
(Habit, I'm afraid)

I hope Dave's suggestion works. Let us know if does (or not).
