I want to replace the default website for an SPS 3.0 installation with a
custom site defined template. If I go into Create a site the only option is
to create one under the http://default/sites/enternewnamehere. I have done
so once before, but for some reason can't seem to do so now. I am clearly
going to the wrong options to perform this function. my http://default site
is not in existence at the moment because yesterday i deleted it, and
replaced it, then deleted again to tweak the custom definitiion, but for some
reason i guess i forgot overnight... or something is really squirrley here...
how can i do this?

This is a newsgroup for questions about standalone installations of WSS 2.0
and 3.0 only.

There is an equivalent portalserver newsgroup at
microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver or you can post your question to
the admin newsgroup for all SharePoint products at
microsoft.public.sharepoint.setup_and_administration.

I am sorry, maybe I was not clear enough, but this IS as standalone
installation so my questions stands.

Just to make it quite clear.

SPS stands for SharePoint Portal Server. The third version of that (your SPS
3.0) is called MOSS 2007. (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007) - the
second version was SPS 2003.

Both SPS 2003 and MOSS 2007 are not covered here.

Now, did you mean WSS 3.0 when you wrote "SPS 3.0" ? If so, you *are* in
the right newsgroup.

Hi,
if you want to replace the default site in sharepoint with a custom defined
template then follow this steps:

Create a new Virtual Server (VS) in IIS and extend it to sharepoint then
when you create an web application (called so in Version 3) choose you
custom defined template!

Hi Daniel.

When creating a new web application I never select any templates -
only when creating a new site collection.

My problem is that even though I've added my custom template (an .stp
file) to the master site template gallery for the admin site I can't
select it from the list of templates when creating the default (root)
site of the WSS 3.0 site collection.

Am I missing something? Have I added the site template the wrong way?`

I'm going to fiddle with stsadm.exe to see if that helps any.

TIA.
