Q1: I'll confess to not knowing what a routing slip is that makes it
non-sortable.
Can you explain what kind of field you are using for this ?
In my experience if the field itself is impossible to sort (or impossible to
sort in the way you intend) then the simplest way is to create another field
that will be used only for the sort and fill in its values when filling in
the value of the routing slip field(s).
This additional field could be numeric; text or probably Choice (if you know
which options there are).
