Hello,

Regarding the issue, would you please explain more about "short term lock"?
Do you mean the lock on an document, and the document is currently editing
by others?

Here is an article which may be correlative:

You receive a "<FileName> is locked for editing by 'another user'" message
when you try to modify a document in Windows SharePoint Services even
though you are the user who previously opened the document
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899709/en-us

You may take a look to see if it can address the issue.

Sincerely,

Luke Zhang

Thank You for the reply. The KB you refer to is a similar situation but what
I need to do is unlock a document that another employee has opened.

For example, an employee opens the document by clicking "Edit in Microsoft
Word". The document now has a short term lock in the document library. The
employee then locks their computer and goes to lunch. While the employee is
at lunch, I receive a phone call from the users department and they need the
lock released right away.

I can not wait for the employee to get back from lunch to release the short
term lock. Also, I can not power down their machine or restart the servers
and we will not be upgrading to Sharepoint 2007 for several years. I need to
be able to break the short term lock while the document is still open.

Hello,

We cannot release a lock manually from other user account. However, the
lock added by WSS will only be hold about 10 minutes, and we can even get a
read only copy during these 10 minutes and edit it locally. If there is a
urgent issue, we may get a read only copy for editing and update to WSS
after 10 minutes. I think 10 minutes is enough for most situation.

Luke Zhang

That only works if WSS does not get a response from Word after 10 minutes. If
a user locks their computer it does not stop Word from sending updates to WSS.

I tested it out on two computers. I logged on to Computer 1 using Account A.
I then opened a document for editing from the Document Library on Computer 1
and locked the computer for the day. A day later I logged on to Computer 2
using Account B and could not edit or checkout the document because Account A
has it checked out.

Thank You

Hello,

Members of the Administrator and Web Designer site groups (or members of
any site group with the Cancel Check-out right) for a site can override a
document check-out if necessary, and force the document to be checked in
with the previous version. To force a document to be checked in, you use
the same command as the user would use to check in a document normally.

Generally speaking, Check out a document allows users to obtain exclusive
write access to a it, eliminating the need to merge changes from multiple
authors. So, after a user check a document out, other users are intend to
work with a read only copy or local copy. For example, a document is
checked out and edit by someone, and an urgent request income when he is
out for lunch, we can have an administrator force the document check in and
get a original copy. ( changes made by the user may get discarded anyway).

Sincerely,

Luke Zhang

You got a little confused. The topic is on short-term check outs not
long-term check outs. I would like to do a similar action on a short-term
check out that is done for a long-term check out. Short-term check outs are
when you open a document for editing with out selecting the 'Check Out'
command. Is there any way to break the short-term lock?

Thank You

Hello,

I may be misleaded by the "check out". Regarding the question, there is a
work around which may help:

1. When another user is currently editing a document, and we need to update
the document on WSS site right away, you may fisrt open a read only copy in
Word and and then save it on local disk.
2. In Windows Explorer, expand "My Network Place", and select "Add new
Network Place". Add a network place to the WSS document library like
http://Myserver/Shared Documents. It will be opened in Windows Explorer
like a share folder.
3. Copy the file we saved locally in step 1 to the Network Place folder.

I tested this on my side, it seems to be update the document successfully.
Can you take a try on your side?

Sincerely,

Luke Zhang

This did not work either. I got a write failure. Thank You for all your time
and effort but I think I'm going to open a case with Microsoft.
