Ok, as I mentioned in an earlier post, this is my first
day trying to figure out SharePoint, so bear with me if
these are simple questions.

I went through a couple of tutorials that were
recommended to me and I never saw anywhere that mentions
how to edit the launch bar. Yes, I figured out how to
add things, and then delete the things I've added, but
how do you delete the "original" headings like Documents,
Pictures, Lists, Discussions and Surveys? This is going
to be for simple, non-technical users and to many choices
are going to confuse them.

Also, I went to the http://www.wssdemo.com/ and
downloaded some of their templates, in a vain effort to
reverse engineer their sites, and ran into a problem when
I loaded them up. I can see them just fine, but I can't
modify the home page at all. It says that there are
either no web parts on the page or I don't have
permission.

Any help and suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

The easiest way is to edit the page in FrontPage 2003.

To delete the default links for the quick launch bar open the ONET.XML file
for the site template you wish to edit. Search for the <NavBars> element in
the file and remove the ones you no longer wish to see on the site.

For most uses (and admins) Jeff's solution is the way to go and you should
in my opinion certainly try that route (which is open the site in FP 2003;
open defualt.aspx; select the Quick Launch section; Right-click etc.) before
looking at Todd's suggestion which removes them for good and is probably
overkill in most cases (again - in my opinion)

The WSS FAQ (European mirror) site at www.wssfaq.com shows the result of one
method of removing these headers by using FP 2003 (moving the Quick Launch
links from the left to the top centre).

I've written up how I did this in section IV.23 (How do I remove the
"headings" in Quick Launch) of that same FAQ.

Both methods accomplish the same task. However editing the file directly on
the file system without utilizing FrontPage 2003 provides this key benefit.

Performance should be faster when a MySite loads because SharePoint does not
have to head to the database to find the changes you made to the page in
FrontPage 2003 and load them at runtime. Instead the file will be loaded
from the virtual shadow copy of the file that exists in the memory on the
server.

Ah, but this is the WSS newsgroup and WSS doesn't have MySite.
