HI!

I have a WSS site with office documents. When I open the site on a machine
with Office 2000 I can open the documents without getting prompted to
re-authenticate. If I open the site on a machine with Office 2003 I get
prompted to re-authenticate. This leads me to believe it is not a problem
with IIS or IE but with the version of Office. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks,
ReneeDD

Check, Check and make sure the user has rights to the file.. make sure you
have the User Authentication in the Security Setting set correct. Can IE
open a txt file without re-authenticate. Does the user have permission to
the IE or Office temp directory..... A number of directions to look in, but
tell me what happens.. This should work.. (Do you have the latest upgrades)

Colin,

I am logged in as an administrator of the site so I am sure I have
permissions to open the documents.
Text files(Ex. Test.txt) open without prompting for a username and password
as do PDF files so this is definately an Office 2003 issue.

Sharepoint has SP1 installed and my version of Office 2003 is fully patched
and all available updates have been downloaded.

As for "Does the user have permission to the IE or Office temp directory"
the answer is "NO". I am logged into the extranet using a different username.
I don't think this is the problem though because if I re-enter my username
and password when prompted, the document opens.

Thanks for you suggestions. I will keep looking.

Regards,
ReneeDD

This is probably this KB article

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;871155

"You are prompted to enter your user name and your password when you open an
Office document in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or in Windows SharePoint
Services"

see that for the fix (in IIS) - it's caused by using Basic Authentication

(If of course you are not using Basic Authentication, it won't help you)
