Problem with SharePoint 2007 Backup and Document Library

I am having a major problem with WSS v3.

Every few days random office documents uploaded to document libraries
will not open. The browser reports the document could not be opened
and that the path or filename is invalid.

At the same time the SharePoint backup stops working. If a backup is
run from Central Admin, the process hangs when it gets to the first
content database. Both issues can be resolved by rebooting the
server.

These problems are related and I'm assuming the content database is
the cause. There are no errors in the SQL server or event logs. I
have run SQL profile traces on some counters to get some indication of
what is going but haven't turned up anything. The only thing unusual
about the farm is that it was migrated from Beta 2 TR and moved to a
new server with MOSS RTM.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any help is appreciated.

I.e. you have MOSS 2007.

This is the newsgroup for WSS .0 and WSS 3.0 installations.

Admin questions for all SharePoint products and versions are at

or MOSS 2007 questions can be posted to the old Portal Server newsgroup
microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver

When you post to one of them the usual questions will be

a) what kind of documents these are
b) whether there are any non-English characters in the names of the files
c) which version of IE are you using
d) are you running Vista on the clients

(for the not opening part of your question)

perhaps you could add that info to your question when posting there.
