Is it possible to configure SharePoint Services so that the user is not
prompted to log in? I am looking to use this to update our organization's
intranet and would like to know if I can set SharePoint to allow access based
on the credentials of the user that is logged into the machine rather than
prompting them to enter a username and password. Thanks in advance, Chanda

You can make the WSS site anonymous access. This removes all need for the
user to be prompted for access but does not "allow access based on the
credentials of the users that is logged into the machine".

That could be done however by a change in ever users' IE Security settings.
There you can specify in the "Internet Options / Security / Custom Level /
login section that the credentials of the users that is logged into the
machine are used by WSS.

It means that all people in your domain are assigned access rights to the
WSS site - it actually assigns a single Group to the site.

(You can afterwards delete the group if you want; it is listed normally just
as if it were a person that you had given rights.

Thank you very much for the reply - this may in fact accomplish what I'm
looking for. Another question...on the page within WSS where you enable
anonymous access there is another option to Allow All Authenticated Users
access to the website. Can someone explain what exactly this option is?
Thanks again, Chanda

Engelbert, you said:

would this be the AD group 'domain users' or is that an AD group
specific to our company's installation? What would be the title or
label of this Group as seen in Manage Users?
Thanks,
Clark

almost certainly - I still haven't got a box accessible from here (hence my
floundering early on with the name) that has this set, but that's my memory
of the name.

For the same reason I can only remember (hopefully correctly) that this is
the name used in Manage Users where it is at the bottom of the list with a
separator between it and "normal" users listed there.
