Hi there,
We have a legacy file system which has Word, Excel, PPT documents and we
want to import them into document workspace of Sharepoint portal server. The
main purpose of this is to have a powerful search capability from SPS and
this way we can also control the versioning of document. If anyone could help
me in finding a solution for this it will be really helpful. I tried spin.exe
but it works only for a sharepoint port V1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John

This is the newsgroup for Windows SharePoint Services.

Despite you asking about SharePoint Portal Server 2003 I presume you intend
to add them to a WSS Document Workspace as you posted here and not to the
Portal Server newsgroup. (.portalserver)

I don't however understand the problem.

A document workspace contains document libraries and you can use any of
several methods to copy documents to document libraries such as

Multiple Upload (if you have Office 2003 on the client)

Copy Paste to the doc lib in My Network Places

Copy Paste to the doc lib set up via Net Use as a local drive (also needs
Office 2003 on the client)

so what is the problem ?

Or is it just that this is not a WSS question at all and it should have gone
to the Portal Server newsgroup?

Thanks Mike for your input. I have also posted this query in PORTAL Site. I
was just wondering if there is a way to import Word document with the meta
data into the portal server so that the index can be created for this
document. This actually will be much efficient when we do a search on the
document. So if there is any tool which can convert the word document or
excel into Portal DB format and get the index generated for them it will be
much helpful.
ANy thoughts
Thanks
John

As you specifically talked in your first message about the "SPS search
capability", that is very definitely *only* a question for the SPS newsgroup
not this one.

This newsgroup doesn't cover things which are SPS-only; SBS 2003-only;
Project Server 2003-only and which thus don't apply to all WSS
implementations.

You should have a look at the GotDotNet opensource project SharePoint
Import Export tools and other utilities. It has a file system export option
to prep the XML files for spin to use.
