Hello!

I have a custom list that is rather large, about 40 fields, and there =
are 20 entries so far in this list, and when I try to add another entry, =
i get this error:

The list item could not be added because the length of the fields was =
too long. Please shorten the new entries or remove some fields from =
this list.

Also, I can add data through other lists fine, i.e. annoucments and =
contacts. AND I can add an item to this custom list through SQL, simply =
entering the data directly into the table, this works fine. There is =
something up with Sharepoint! =20

I take back my first reply. I went back and checked through my messages =
from where I had the problem and this was my solution:

In the Lists table in the Database, there are two columns: tp_ItemCount =
and
tp_NextAvailableID. If you added data manually to the database (which I
wouldn't recommend) you have to update these two columns for the list =
that
you're adding data to.

Had you manually added any records prior to having this problem?

Dave,

You ARE limited by the number of fields in the list. This is due to the
database schema that is denormalized for lists. You may have hit that limit.

Generally the tp_NextAvailableID is one more than the tp_ItemCount =
value. If you only added one record, I would increment each value by =
one. In theory I'm not sure it matters what the NextAvailableID is as =
long as it doesn't think it's one that's already being used.=20

However, as I said, I would STRONGLY recommend not adding anything =
directly to the database. As you can see from this one problem you're =
having there are repercussions. :-) =20

The field tp_NextAvailableID was set to 18, meanwhile I already had an =
item with tp_ID of 18, so when it was trying to assign it it errored? =
Typical microsoft for returning an error message that doesn't pertain to =
the issue ;) I set the value from 18 to 36, which is the next ID.

dun forget, accessing the database directly voids any support agreement you
might have wth microsoft. which u should change ur subject ;)
