    - password and documents Hi I have various files uploaded in General Documents folder. If a file is an Office file (doc, xls, etc.), Office lauches the app and tries to open the document. When this happens, a prompt pops up asking for user name and password. -How can I get these documents to open without being prompt for password ?     - preventing users from seeing other users Hello, This may seem strange, but I got the request from a custom to prevent users seeing who and how many other users are allowed to get into a WSS site. This includes power users who know how sharepoint works and know how to access web services... We can assume that users will not have permissions to create or change lists - so the user information lookup field is not a problem. the problem is the documents in the site (when opened, the task pane shows the "members") and the web services (and anything else I missed). For security reasons we cannot allow users to see how many other users are allowed to the site. Oh, we do need seperate users - anonymous is not an option... Ideas?     - Unable to save Sites as templates This used to work. My supervisor is the one who uses our Sharepoint Services to create team sites etc. He claims he has been able to save sites as templates in the past and created new sites from them. We do have our content/configuration on a remote MSSQL Database server. I verified i CAN create/edit/upload/delete content etc from the sharepoint services. Nothing else appears out of the ordinary, but I am convinced a setting/permission was changed either in the Sharepoint Central Configuration or on the database. When we try to save a Site as a template, i receive an ERROR "Cannot open file "_catalogs/wt/xxxxx.stp". I would appreciate any input on this issue. Tag: Installing sharepoint Tag: 42697

    - Server Error in '/' Application. Since updating our SBS2003 SP1 with .NET Framework 2.0, the "Companyweb" page fails to load, however the "Remote Web Workplace" still functions. I have checked in IIS Manger and discovered that the Website "Microsoft Sharepoint Administration" has version 2.0.50727 of ASP.NET while all the other sites have version 1.1.4322 of ASP.NET. I am unable to utilize the drop down to change it to version 1.1.4322 like the other sites. I have tried taking the other sites to version 2.0.50727. I then get the "Companyweb" to work but the "Remote Web Workplace" begins to fail. I have also run .NET Repair options. What else should I look for?     - Email alerts in Helpdesk WSS Application I have installed and massively configured the free HelpDesk application for WSS that Microsoft released. It's absolutely perfect for our needs and I was able to make it do everything required. On the eve of releasing it to our users, I discovered that the alerts did not work as I had anticipated. What we need is when a supervisor puts in a submit, they receive alerts when the ticket is modified or closed. Now I know I can have them turn on alerts for the list, but they will notify them of every other item in the tickets list. I only want them to be notified for the ones they do.     - Properties of InfoPath Form Library Hi, I have a question about the user-defined property of a form library. When create a new document library or a form library, we are able to add new columns for displaying. We can also specify a new column as "requires that this column contains infomation". In case of a word or excel document library, when set up as described above, and when save a new document to the library from one's desktop, a dialog box will pop up to require use to enter the required information as defined in the column. HOWEVER, this doesn't work for an InfoPath form library. When click "Fill out a from" from the library, and save it back, even the required column is defined, no dialog box pops up for collecting required information. Also, if an InfoPath form is saved in a document library, it is same as well. I'm trying to use this mechanism to implement certain workflow. But it can work for InfoPath form library.     - Inviting attendees to meeting workspace Hello, when I invite people to an existing meeting workspace by Outlook, a new meeting workspace with a new ID is created; then, there are two instances of the same meeting (same date, same time) on the left hand menu. It then looks like a recurrent meeting, but it is defined without a series. How does one accomplish to invite (or add by invitation) attendees to an existing meeting workspace without increasing its ID and generating new pages? If you have an issues list that, for example, contains two categories of issues. Is it possible to set permissions on the categories so that only a certain group of users would be able to see all issues in Category A and all the rest of the users can only see Category B.     - Creating Links to Files on Hard Drives Thanks for reading my post. As a new user I have managed to get Winserver 2003 loaded and WSS up and working . With that said I have a need to create links to files that reside on an external hard drive attached to the server that is running WSS. I'm running the Desktop version of SQL and have roughly 40 gig of data that needs to be available (doc's, images, spreadsheets...etc). My vision is simple...something like the "Documents Libary " with the excpetion that it has a link to the file on the external drive...not uploaded to the SQL database.     - WSS installed without removing FPSE first - fixup options? It wasn't me! But now I have to clean up the situation. This is highly annoying because FPSE isn't even being used by anything. So I uninstalled FPSE after the fact. I noted that FPSE lingered on in the IIS web server extensions (even after an iisreset). I tried upgrading the virtual server anyway as per popup instructions (stsadm -o upgrade), but got the message "Cannot upgrade virtual server http://myserver/. Windows SharePoint Services does not support in-place upgrading of SharePoint Team Services v. 1.0 from Microsoft or FrontPage Server Extensions. You must migrate the content from this virtual server to a new virtual server extended with Windows SharePoint Services." I don't have spare ip addresses for new virtual servers, so hoping for another workaround. Any suggestions? Would a stsadm forceupgrade succeed without breaking everything?     - Question about adding .net 2.0 to existing 2003 server with WSS Hi all I have a 2003 server with all the latest MS patches Running WSS with SP2 and SQL 2000 enterprise with SP4. I also have a second non WSS site running on the same server. I am planning on installing .net 2.0 and SQL 2005 Express for the second site. The WSS site will remain as is with .net 1.1. My quesiton is if I do install the .net 2.0 and sql express 2005 will that cause any issues to my existing WSS setup?     - Possible to restore WSS site or list to different Virt server? OK so we're in the "proof of concept" stage deciding how best or if at all to use WSS or plunging into SPS for our company. This explains why we haven't hired anyone who knows what their doing. For now I'm "the guy" even though I'm a network security guy. (funny huh?) I blew away telecom's WSS site by accident. Its not a huge deal since no one's been given the official "go" to start using WSS in production anyways. But they had some calendering and contact lists I'd like to get back if possible. I restored the file structure originally at c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions to my home drive. But where the heck is telecom's site? Shouldn't it be in a default.aspx or .xml file somewhere deeper in the path? Is what I describe even possible?     - WSS backup procedures Hi, I would like to backup a WSS site running on SBS2003 and have referred to the WSS administrator's guide but am still confussed as to the best way to accomplish this. Is using the stsadm.exe tool the recommended way? If so, can you provide script or instructions on how to best run this tool. I have tried several ways from the examples in the admin guide without success. I would like to backup the complete site daily. The site is using MDBE not SQL server DB.     - strange sharepoint permission problem Hi, On one of our top level site http://host/sites/test , only users in "Administrators" group can access the site. If they are "Reader", "Contributor", or "Webdesigner" then they don't have acess. Before everybody were able to access. Also strangely, sites beneath it, users can access just fine eg http://host/sites/test/subsite1x. Has anybody encounter this and know what to do ? We are running Sharepoint Portal Server 2003.     - shortcut to website in document library Hello everyone, This has been a problem that has perplexed me and now it isn't working at all. My users want to be able to access a website address from a document library. The way I did it in the past is to go to the url, and drag and drop the .url file into the doc library. This latest time I tried, it is pulling up the website, which is a framed site, with no content in the frames, just 'page cannot be found errors'. I tested the .url file by clicking on it from my desktop and it works fine. What is the best way to do what I am trying to do?     - Unable to login to WSS All, I am using windows 2003 Standard SP1. I installed WSS 2.0. I'm pretty sure it is SP2, how can I check that? (I used stsv2.exe to install.) On this server when I access the site (logged onto server as administrator) I get into the home page without being prompted for username and password. I then added users via the: site settings/ Manage users/ Add users and was able to add user, when I go to my laptop and try to logon as newly added user, (domain\username and password) when I click ok at the prompt it just acts like it wants me to put in the password again, after the 3rd try it gives me the "You are not authorized to view this page" error. In IIS under my Sharepoint website properties, Directory Security, I have it set for "Integrated Windows authentication". So, for example, when I allow a new user to use a virtual SharePoint server, it is not possible to send an e-mail to this user.     - Document Library - Forms - Cannot add a template I am now stumped. I created a child site and in the child site added a new form library. When I go to Explorer view on the server I get an error, and when I go on a client I get the Explorer view but no "Forms" folder, if I try and create a Forms folder then I get an error message saying it already exists. So I decided to try on the main site, there I see the Forms folder but if I try and copy a file there I get an access denied error, even if I am logged in as administrator I have looked everywhere to find where I can change these rights, I cannot find it. Hi all

I'm trying to install sharepoint services on windows server 2003 (SP1)
if I do a default install I have no problems. However we have a sql
server and I want to install in server farm mode and this is fine as
far as it goes, when I get to the configure sharepoint for central
administration part of the install I have a problem.

I created a new domain user account specifically for sharepoint I
create a new app pool and then use this new account for the app pool.
>From what I have read this account is granted necessary rights during
install I also added it to administrators for good luck. After I have
restarted IIS I can no longer connect to the admin pages using the
specified account (or any other) either locally or remotely. Which kind
of wrecks my installation :-)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to make sure that accounts that you use for the various bits match.

One place to look would be to go to IIS and look at the app pools you are
using. It might be that you will there see that there was a problem using
the app pool for the admin pages.
