RSS Feed being cached.. please help!
This is driving me nuts. I am grabbing the daily dilbert feed on our portal
site (http://feeds.feedburner.com/DilbertDailyStrip). This was working fine
for a while, but now it has not updated since the June 8th (two days ago). I
logged onto my sharepoint server (moss 2007), and verified i could access the
site under the sharepoint account, and was not getting blocked.
I then proceeded to add an RSS web part to a different sharepoint site, on
the same collection (i only have one collection), and pointed it to that
feed. That again, only showed feeds from before the 8th.
I turned of the caching data view options for the web part, to see if that
helped. I then deleted all caches and disabled caching, just to see if that
would help. Nothing has! Any suggestions? Tag: Importing problem Tag: 67015
Automatically Update Document Properties from Files other than office
Hi,
when I update an Office file like word the document properties, e.g. Title
are automatically updated in the doc lib of WSS. How ever this does not work
for files other than doc, xls, ppt.
For example it does not for work pdf documents. Is there a solution for
this?
Thanks for any comment

Sharepoint services document libraries - replacement of shared folders?
Hi,
I have about 20 users on my network. They all work together in little
departments and so need to share files. I have done this in the past using
shared folders on network servers. Super standard stuff, its what everyone
does.
I do notice though that these folders have aboslutely no structure
whatsoever, and they tend to just grow and grow and grow. I was wondering
if I could get some feedback on whether Sharepoint Sevices Document
Libraries lent itself to a better structure of folder (or site) hierarchy.
I don't think at this stage that they willl use all the other features in
Sharepoint Services so I am concerned that it might be a bit of an OTT
project for me to undertake moving all shared folders on to Sharepoint, if
all they are going to use it for is shared folders. Is that correct, or is
there more to it than just being able to book document in and out, and
version control? Is it easy to create and share sites.
I am aslo concerned about storage and backups. What tools are there out
there for this. Can I just do a SQL backup of the database and backup the
website and that's it? How do I restore a single file.
All help is appreciated.
Bottom line, what I want to know is if it is worth moving to Sharepoint
Services solely to provide shared folder capabilities.
TIA,

Links in Document Library
Hi,
Running WSS 3. Question is can i create links to documents in a document
library rather than creating lists in the quick launch.
I dont want to create an extra option in the quick launch which says LIST
and create links, rather I would like to create links to douments in a
document library.
Is that possible? Is so how?

dataviews.... help please
hi all
I'm new to sharepoint\sharepoint designer etc but have the job of
trying to build up a project management type area from scratch.
I have the basics in place but am trying to create what i think needs
to be a dataview. I have a milestones list and a tasking list. When i
click on and view a milestone underneath i want to be able to see all
the associated tasks that have that milestone associated. The tasking
list has a column which looks up a milestone and allows the user to
select one.
I am using sharepoint designer to edit the dispform.aspx in milestone
and then try to insert new datasource i then select the datasource by
chooing the tasking list and then drag and drop the milestone field
across. I'm not too sure what to do next. Have played around with the
filter but cannot get the associated tasking to show.
I'm guessing that i am missing out a chunk of the process and some
help would be greatly appreciated.

Need help with Search
I needed to migrate a WSS 3 server to new hardware. It is up and running
with the exception of search. I ended up creating a new Search database as
the first one created when I installed WSS gave errors and would not run. I
can start a full crawl and see the CPU spike and the search service and
SQLServer running hard. The event logs show the search session run, master
merge complete, etc. The Search MDF file is about 18M right now and the log
file 15. The mdf file on the old server was about 36M... not a lot, but I
could search for everything. I have checked via stsadm and search is set on
the content database so it should crawl. I set the SQL ##SSEE and Search
services to run under the same account that the application pool runs under.
Search gives no results. Even for new content. Wait a day, nothing. Trigger
full crawls, nothing.
When I stop and restart the SQL server ##SSEE I get these:

WSS FAQ additions and corrections - 1st - 7th June 2008
Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS /
Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can't guarantee that they still are.
(This is also posted to my blog at http://mikewalsh.bilsimser.com)
(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new
items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com
daily.)
From 1st - 7th June 2008
NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date
of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change
(so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than
important as important text changes ought to result in a major version
change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future
not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version
change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major
version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB
articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

Questions regarding installing "Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0"
I'm trying to install some application templates for my new WSS 3.0 site.
I'm using the documantation below and have run up against an error message I
need assistance on.
I've already completed the first part "To install the Application Template
Core solution" with no errors so I'm now working on the second part "To
install an Application Template".
In Step #6 -
"Next, run "stsadm -o deploysolution -name
<template_name>.wsp -allowgacdeployment". Additional attributes may be
required based on your Windows
SharePoint Services configuration.
I get this message at the end "Please specify either '-immediate' or
'-local' or 'time' parameter.
Now I assume this is in relation to the end of Step #6 where it says
"Additional attributes may be required based on your Windows SharePoint
Services configuration."
Anybody no what this means and which attribute I need to use and where in
the command line I insert the attribute?
Thanks in advance.

WSS 2.0 anonymous access

PDF Files not indexed after installation of PDF IFilter 6.0
Hi!
I'm trying to set up my wss site to index contents of PDF files. I've
installed PDF IFilter 6.0 and followed instructions in the readme file.
In fact, they only thing I couldn't do is Step 6 in readme.htm:
6. [SHAREPOINT ONLY] Add PDF as a file type to be included in the content
index. On the SharePoint Site Settings Page, in the Search Settings and
Indexed Content section, chose Configure search and indexing. On the
Configure Search and Indexing page, in the General Content Settings and
Indexing Status, choose Include File Types. On the Include File Types page,
choose Add File Type. On the Add File Type page, in the File Extension box,
type PDF for the file type that you want to add to the list of file types
for the content index. Choose OK.
Maybe I did something wrong or maybe IFileter 6.0 doesn't work for WSS. Is
there any way to resolve this? Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66959
Sharing pdf files between several sites
Hi!
I'm building a local intranet site for our company, where there're several
sites for each department.
I have many PDF files in various folders spread around several file servers.
Each department has certain permissions on folders containing this data. I
need to reflect that in my WSS site without uploading same pdf files in each
site if possible.
Let's say, the structure of the intranet site is like this:
Home // Sales // Purchase // Administration // Accounting etc.
Let's say that Sales has access R+W to pdf files in folder A, and Purchase
department has R access to the same folder.
I also need to make those pdf files be visible both under Sales shared
documents and Purchase department shared documents since Sales must not have
access to the Purchase department's site.
How can this be accomplished? Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66955

files. I've restarted the MS Search Service, the Microsoft

have any ideas?

WSS 3.0 Calendar Edit "Manage Lists" permission failing
I have WSS 3.0 and I have set the calendar advanced settings/Item-level
permissions so people can only edit the entries they make.
According to the page, so long as the user does not have the "Manage Lists"
permission, they will be unable to edit any entries they do not make.
To test this, I logged in as a user in the Contribute group (which does not
have "Manage Lists" permission. and created an item in the calendar. I
logged out and logged back in as another user in the Contribute group, and
was able to successfully edit the item.
I'm in a bit of a quandry because this is directly contrary to the
information about permissions, I should be unable to edit an item that I
didn't create.
Any ideas? Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66949
Projects - Modified date
Using WSS 3.0 and created a Project web part and noticed there is no
tracking of when a project task is updated. its hard to figure out which
parts have been updated in a project due to this. Our work around at this
point is to modify the title of the task to append the modified date to it,
but thats rather silly.
I tried to add a new column and make it a date/time but thats clunky at
best.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Seeking good documentation for migrating websites and data from WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0

Question/Feedback for MS Product Managers in SharePoint & InfoPath
I would like to post a question/feedback for the Product Managers of
SharePoint and InfoPath. (Alex Xie... could you pass this along to the
Product Managers?)
I would also appreciate feedback from the rest of the community to see if
you agree with this.
I really enjoy using SharePoint and InfoPath. I've been using the
combination for about nine months now and find it has a lot of potential for
enterprise use. I do, however, want to pass along my frustration with finding
solutions to development roadblocks.
I have lots of information sources, but I have still had a tough time
finding solutions. Iâ??ve tried Newsgroups, Forums, Web searches, blogs, and
online book systems. It seems to me that there is limited information about
InfoPath with WSS/SharePoint. That makes me worry that maybe MS isnâ??t fully
behind this product combination.
I have both MSDN and TechNet subscriptions, but neither offers a managed
newsgroup for InfoPath. I use InfoPath almost exclusively with WSS 3, so I
have to try posting questions to the WSS group and hoping that the managed
newsgroup team feels that the question is appropriate.
When the issue is clearly WSS related, the Managed Newsgroup team has done a
great job of helping me. Crosscutting issues between InfoPath and SharePoint,
however, are sometimes rejected as not appropriate for the WSS newsgroup.
When I've had purely InfoPath issues, however, there is little help
available. The non-managed InfoPath newsgroups seem to have very low
activity. Alex Xie from the managed newsgroup team recently pointed me toward
the forums. I understand that these are becoming a focus for the MS teams. My
recent question there, however, took several days to get a response from a
community member.
It's not just the forums and newsgroups that are frustrating regarding
InfoPath & WSS. I have access to 24x7 Books, but nine months ago there were
NO InfoPath books there. I asked 24x7 to look at that and they have slowly
added six books on the topic. Safari also offered a limited selection.
Web sites and blogs about InfoPath with SharePoint are also more limited
than I've found for other tools. Only a handful of MVPs offer info on
SharePoint/Infopath.
SharePoint has a better community, so you might ask why this community
should care about InfoPath? My experience is that SharePoint is limited
without InfoPath's forms abilities. SharePoint can have a strong presence in
our enterprise environment when it fully teams with InfoPath.
MS has done a lot to make the software work together, but it can't spread
out unless developers feel comfortable with the level of support. I don't
want to use up my MSDN/TechNet phone call on issues but I need to resolve
them without waiting days for advice.
This lack of information makes it an uphill struggle to advocate SharePoint
throughout the enterprise. So, my suggestion for the MS Product Managers is
that there be more effort in building a community of developers around
InfoPath & SharePoint.
There should be a managed newsgroup (or forum) for InfoPath or InfoPath with
WSS/MOSS.
Not many developers would be willing to take the leap I have in trying to
learn how to make the two products work. I'm excited about what I've learned,
but I don't think I would recommend that other developers try this route at
this time.
Iâ??m posting this here hoping that the Managed Newsgroup team will pass this
along to the appropriate MS people.
In addition, ***I would appreciate feedback from the SharePoint
community.*** Your support here could help MS pay attention.
If you have integrated WSS/MOSS with InfoPath, have you found similar
issues? Are there support resources I am missing? I'm hopeful that the
non-managed Forums will be better than the non-managed Newsgroups.
I think MS should do more to support a community of developers using WSS
with InfoPath. A managed Newsgroup or Forum would be a great first step.

Stored proc and dataview.
Hey all,
I have a stored procedure which i have one parameter in built username
which i am passing the current users username. I'm having the
following issues when i attempt to change the filter or add additional
parameters after i've added the stored procedure into a data view
webpart. The data view breaks and no data is available afterwards.
Is it even possible to apply filter's on data from a stored proc in a
dataview? Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66931
Calculated field total of tasks rolling up to a project
I've created a "task" list and a "project" list. I'd like to get a
calculated field total of all tasks rolling up to a project.
Example:
Project 1
Task A = 5 hrs
Task B = 10 hrs
Calculated field for total task hours = 15. Ideally this field would
be a column in the Projects list. From what I can see the calculated
field in a list can only sum from columns in it's own list. Does
anybody know of any workarounds I could do with SharePoint Designer or
possibly something easy within Visual Studio (newbie).
Thanks,
Colin Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66928
Pulling data from InfoPath form submitted as email
I'm interested in having users submit InfoPath forms to a Sharepoint site via
email, then take the data in the form and perform workflow tasks based on
this. As of now we are unable to get the data from emailed forms to be
imported into the list. If we submit directly to the library it works fine,
but this is a security problem for us.
We need to enable users without access to the site to submit forms. We need
to do this to preserve privacy on the site-- we need to have multiple
submitters but don't want them seeing other folk's data-- and multiple sites
is not an option. Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66922
SharePoint Calendar View Issue
Hi All,
I have just found several issues with Calendar View from WSS 3.0:
Unable to filter by [Start Time] and [End Time]
I am not sure why these 2 columns doesn't appear in the Filtering
column in the View Settings. The workaround found in the internet is
to create calculated column for Start Time and and End Time. However,
it doesn't work for Recurring Event, the calculated column will show
only first recurring event Start Time.
Unable to use "Group By"
When I create new view in Calendar using format: "Standard View, with
Expanding Recurring Events", there is no option to specify "Group By".
Anyone knows how to show all recurring event in List view and grouped
by Start Time (or any other column).
Thank you and apprecate for any idea. Tag: Importing problem Tag: 66918
Workflows dont run after deploy (but I open and save ...)
Ciao to everyone.
I build a sharepoint site (WSS 3.0) with SP Designer.
In this site there are many workflows. After testing I saved the site
as template, but when I created a new site using template I got a
surprise because some workflow dont run (Error: Impossible start). So
I opened the workflows with Designer (on the new site) and saved it
without any modify. After this action the workflows run correctly.
Do you can understand why? Do you think what I can do to resolve this
problem?
I must deploy the site on a Sharepoint Server where I can't operate
with SP Designer.

WSS FAQ additions and corrections - 25th - 31st May 2008
Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS /

From 25th - 31st May 2008
NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date
of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change
(so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than
important as important text changes ought to result in a major version
change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future
not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version
change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major
version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB
articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

wss 3.0 survey issue
For some reason regardless of whether I add a user with read permissions
they're able to export all survey responses to excel.
Are people experiencing the same issue as well?
Is there a way to fix this issue? I tried changing the advanced settings so

they're still able to export to excel.

Creating a default view for document libraries?
I've poked around the group a bit but don't see this question
specifically (or at least my searches didn't pick it up.) :)
At my company we create a document library on sharepoint (WSS 2.0) for
each individual project that we are working currently. Inevitably we
want to sort the documents into categories, but not all of the people
who create the libraries know (or care) to enable the category lookup
when they create the library.
Is there a way to set a "default" sharepoint view for new document
libraries? In this way I wouldn't have to go back and add the column
in later, and then be stuck editing categories in 20 different
documents.
Thank you for any replies,

WSS 3 & InfoPath: Pull Values for Dropdown
I need some help with an InfoPath dropdown box that shows values from a WSS 3
site. The InfoPath form stores data in a WSS 3 Forms Library. Each form
stores an ID value that uniquely identifies the form.
I need add a new dropdown to the form. The dropdown will allow users to
select the ID of another, existing form. The user should click the dropdown
and see a full list of valid ID numbers. They will select the correct ID
number for the cross-reference, then save the new form.
I've been able to create a datasource connecting to the list. Infopath
successfully populates the dropdown, but only only returns the first 100 ID
numbers, the ones that show in the default view.
How can I retreive a value from each form, not just the first 100?

WSS 3: Problem Opening InfoPath Form from Forms Library
I am having some trouble opening InfoPath forms from a forms library. The
error seems to be on my machine, not on others. I would appreciate
information on how to fix the association with InfoPath or other advice on
fixing the issue.
Here's the background: I am building an InfoPath form stored in a WSS 3
Forms Library. To create a new document, I have been able to click the "New"
button in the form library. Clicking that button used to cause the form to
load in InfoPath.
Recently, however, this machine has been giving me error message when I
click on the "new" button. Here is the info on the message box....
Title:
"Windows Internet Explorer"
Message:
"The document could not be created.
"The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for
this document library cannot be opened.
"Please try the following:
"1. Check the General Settings for this document library for hte name of the
template, and install the application necessary for opening the template. If
the application was set to install on first use, run the application and then
try creating a new document again.
"2. If you have permission to modify this document library, go to General
Settings for the library and configure a new template."
This maching already has both InfoPath 2003 and InfoPath 2007 installed.
Both run fine.
I have checked the template in the forms library... it is linked correctly.
Testing on another computer works fine. Using another machine, I am able to
use the "new" button without problem. That other machine has InfoPath 2003
installed.
What do I need to do to fix the association with InfoPath and this form
template?

WSS 3: Deploy workflows to production
I am trying to deploy WSS 3 workflows from a development server to a prod
environment. I would like to copy the approved workflow to the prod server.
For security reasons, we've blocked use of SharePoint Designer on the prod
box. I can use Designer to build the workflows on the dev box, but I CANNOT
use Designer on the production box.
I really don't want to enable Designer on the prod box. Instead, I would
like to complete the workflows on the development box, then deploy them to
production WITHOUT using Designer.
I CAN connect to the prod server using a UNC connection, allowing me to copy
files using the folder interface. I've tried to copy the four files I found
in the workflows folders:
--aspx file
--xoml file
--xoml.rules file
--xoml.wfconfig.xml
The file copy succeeds, but WSS 3 does not recognize the changed workflow.
If there a way to update the workflow by copying files?
If not, is there a way to do this without using SharePoint Designer on the
production box?

I really running into to troubles with incoming email and i just can't
figure out what the real problem is.
First off my system setup

nothing special at all
smtp service installed

* Authentication - Anonymous
* Connection - All except list below

Drop folder
* default C:inetpub\mailroot\drop
* Folder permissions set to modify for the application pool account
* This will set automatic the permission for sharepoint accounts

*Created new mx record based on servername
* nslookup everything goes fine
Active Directory
*Created new Organization Unit
*Delegate Control to application pool account with the following

-> Incoming Mail
*Enable it
*Select Automatic Mode
*Directory Management Service -> yes
*Accept every e-mail ( not only from authenticated users)
*Almost everything will be automatic configured.
*Distribution Groups are allowed to created
And now the big issue.
If i want to create a new Document Library with incoming email support
i get a few errors like
* Error in Application
* The list have been made but Cannot Create e-mailalias: Error in
