I have a spreadsheet that I would like to import into a list. The
problem I am having is the fields that are the type "Person or Group"
never get populated on the import. I have tried copying and pasting the
information into the bulk editor, exporting to access and syncing and
the same with Excel.

Its a rather big spreadsheet so I dont want to have to do it all in
shreapoint by hand

Have you considered creating a new SP list from the spreadsheet rather
than trying to copy cells into an existing list.

If you need them in the existing list, it might be easier to transfer
the cells from a new SP list.

Just a thought.

One of the Create List options is (far right column I think) from a
spreadsheet.

Ah, yes, I have tried that. Everything gets imported apart from any "Person

Hi craigward,

I noticed that the problem is caused by that particular column (with person
& group value) in the sheet, if convenient, would you send me a simplified
copy of this sheet(with data necessary to repro the problem). I'll try some
tests on my side. Also, please tell me the detailed steps to repro the
problem.

You can reach me at the following address:

Hi Steven,

LIST CONFIG
Employee Full Name Single line of text
Username Person or Group
AD Group Choice
Owned By Person or Group
Access To Person or Group
Diverted To Person or Group
Send on Behalf Person or Group
Email Addresses Multiple lines of text
Created By Person or Group
Modified By Person or Group

EXCEL FILE
Employee Full Name Joe Bloggs
Username jbloggs
AD Group Sales
Owned By jbloggs
Access To hsimpson; cwigum; bsimpson
Diverted To
Send on Behalf
Email Addresses jbloggs@domain.com; jbloggs@domain.co.uk

When I import the file the only columns to receive data will be
Employee Full Name
AD Group
Email Addresses

Sometimes the username gets populated but only for some users.

All the "Person or Group" fields can have multiple selections and can be
left blank
There is about 80 lines of data yet only around 50 gets imported.

for the person or group fields I have tried
jbloggs
Joe Bloggs
domain\jbloggs

and nothing gets imported either by using the bulk editor, exporting to
Access and hoping it will sync or exporting to Excel and hoping to sync.
Importing as a new list does not work either.

Sorry I can't send the data accoss but by the time I was to edit out the
sensitive information it would be worthless anyway.

Hi craigward,

I've performed some tests regarding on the test data you provided. I've
tried creating a new List in sharepoint site from an excel spreedsheet with
the following two means:

1. Use "import from spreadsheet" when creating a new item in sharepoint site

2. In Excel 2007, export a Excel Table into sharepoint site

In both ways, seems all the data/columns can be imported into the list,
however, the column type is set to "single line of text". And If I tried
changing the column type, there is no "People or Group" available.

I've also found the following reference declared that when importing excel
data into sharepoint list, there are only limited column types:

#Export an Excel table to a SharePoint list
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA101314721033.aspx#ExportTable

Text (single line)
Text (multiple lines)
Currency
Date/time
Number
Hyperlink

Therefore, I think the importing behavior here is an bydesign limit of data
from excel sheet.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng
