Editing a List
We have MSP Server and WSS Server installed and operating together
where MSP server will autoprovision a WSS automatically based on a
WSS.STP template. We have rolled this out to users and now have over
40 sites with content in lists and documents uploaded.
My issue is we have over 40 WSS sites and now want to change some of
the lists columns without losing any of the content and automating the
update of the list items.
What options do I have to automatic the maintenance of WSS sites once
in use? Tag: Importing Excel contents into an existing Issue List in WSS Tag: 19984

Email Alerts
Is there a way to turn off the initial alert? This is the alert a user
recieves telling them they have set up an alert. We have a web part
that lets users manage all their alerts, and they are on o topology
that includes over 200 lists that could be included, so we don't want
to send these alerts, and would rather send a link to the web part
where they can manage their alerts.

About using HTML tags for formatting with Netscape Navigator and other browsers
Hi All,
Please help. We host numerous WSS sites on Win2003. One site author
wants the ability to paste/enter in formated html into a discussion.
For the column in question I have verified the 'Allow rich HTML text'
is checked to yes but the tags show in the disscussion text not
rendered. EXAMPLE <b>some text</b> shows up just like I typed it, not
in bold text. If I use the controls in the discussion text box to
format the text, it renders correctly. But thats not what is desired
nor insinuated by the check box for the collumn. I understand the
security concerns in allowing this....I just want to find out why its
not working.
WSS help reads:
When using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and later, Microsoft Windows
SharePoint Services provides convenient tools for formatting and
editing text. By default, rich HTML text is enabled for many columns
with multiple lines of text, allowing users to take advantage of
formatting tools such as font, font color, and background color. If
rich HTML text is turned off, site administrators and users belonging
to site groups with the Manage Lists right can turn on this feature.
When using other browsers, such as Netscape Navigator, you can also
enter rich text formatting by using HTML tags. For example, you can
use the <b> </b> tags to apply boldface to text, as in <b>bold</b>.
When viewing the page, users will see the proper rich text formatting,
such as bold. You can use other HTML tags such as <a href>link</a> for
adding hyperlinks. For more information about HTML tags, consult an
HTML language reference.
Notes
For security reasons, Windows SharePoint Services blocks certain HTML
tags and scripting.
Windows SharePoint Services wraps text within <div></div> tags to
prevent double-spacing. When editing content, enter text between the
<div> and </div> tags.
Any help is much appreciated!!!

Customizing QuickLaunch Bar in SharePoint Services
WARNING: Inexperienced SharePoint Services user here. Is there a way within
the SharePoint Services UI (i.e. without resorting to editing in FrontPage)
to customize the QuickLaunch bar? For example, rather than grouping all the
document libraries together, could I group them with lists and discussion
groups covering the same subject?
Also, is it possible to have the QuickLaunch bar appear on pages other than
the home page (i.e. Contacts, Lists, document libraries). It would be highly
useful to create a site navigation that's always available wherever you are
within the site without having to go back to the home page.
Sorry for the very basic questions -- I've played around with the site tools
for ages and haven't found a way to do what I want. I'm becoming frustrated
that the much-touted "highly flexible" nature of SharePoint Services is not
all it's cracked up to be without FrontPage! Tag: Importing Excel contents into an existing Issue List in WSS Tag: 19968
SMTP not working through WSS
I have a WSS server in the DMZ that cannot send email via SMTP. I
have tried several configurations but the two main ways are as
follows. I configured SMTP on my WSS server and configured the
default server settings on the Central Administration pages to use the
local SMTP server. At that point, I attempted to send a notification
through WSS but I receive an error that the E-Mail configuration on
the server is incorrect. Looking through the SMTP folders, the
message is not there and never received. Then, I attempted to telnet
to port 25 on the SMTP server and the message went through without a
problem. Blat on the server works as well.
The second configuration was to point WSS to my mail relay and attempt
to send a message. Again, WSS gives me the error. I then attempted
telnet and blat through the mail relay and all works.

Impersonation from code
Hi,
I have some trouble understanding and implementing impersonation from code
in a WSS webpart.
It quite well documented in the WSS SDK how to use impersonation when
writing document library event handlers. It works ok.
But how can impersonation by used from code within a webpart ?
This is my situation:
The content of a webpart needs to depend on the current user. The code
checks wether the user is in a certain (custom) role and shows more or less
content depending on the role. There is no problem when the current user is
allowed to check the membership of roles, but when the current user is only
a reader, a logon box appears because the code cannot be executed with the
current users permissions. (in the web.config, identity impersonation =
true)
I thought using impersonation from code for that bit of code would help:
... impersonate with account that has permissions
... execute code
... undo impersonation
However, the result is the same. I'm sure the impersonationcode is ok, I get
a token etc. but SharePoint does not seem to take over the credentials. I
don't no if impersonation from code is possible when identity impersonation
is set to true.
Any ideas ?

Microsoft Excel Files in WSS
I have an Excel file that has fields that are linked directly to the

my users copy the files through windows explorer do I? Any help or

Save Document Library Locally
Just noticed this difference between SPTS and WSS.
From a document library in SPTS, you had the option to download the document
locally. In WSS I can't figure out how to do that. When I click on Name
(linked to edit) or add the column Name (not linked to edit) the results are
still the same; WSS wants to open the document from the server. This is ok
for standard file types but for other more arcane file types this can be a
problem.

A little clarification on Office .DOC and .XLS files
Hello,
Mike Walsh suggested, in an older reply, that you should open a doc or xls
file using the drop-down list and not just by clicking on the title showing
in a shared document library (WSS). That's fine and how I've been doing it
all along. But someone here wants an explanation as to why just a click on
the link, which opens the doc xls in IE, can't then be edited and saved back
to WSS.
Anyone have a bit more input on this?

Quick Launch Bar and Template question
Ok, as I mentioned in an earlier post, this is my first
day trying to figure out SharePoint, so bear with me if
these are simple questions.
I went through a couple of tutorials that were
recommended to me and I never saw anywhere that mentions
how to edit the launch bar. Yes, I figured out how to
add things, and then delete the things I've added, but
how do you delete the "original" headings like Documents,
Pictures, Lists, Discussions and Surveys? This is going
to be for simple, non-technical users and to many choices
are going to confuse them.
Also, I went to the http://www.wssdemo.com/ and
downloaded some of their templates, in a vain effort to
reverse engineer their sites, and ran into a problem when
I loaded them up. I can see them just fine, but I can't
modify the home page at all. It says that there are
either no web parts on the page or I don't have
permission.
Any help and suggestions is appreciated.

Problems with linked files, Bug?
I'm continuing to have problems with local versions of .doc files linked to

why, but it's no big problem, I can recreate it by opening the workspace

Add web part into web part page dynamically
Hi,
I have a set of web parts (runat server) and I want only one web part
to sit on my web part page at one time according to user's selection.
I have made a master web part whose UI is like this: a dropdown list
which contains items such as Web part 1, Web part 2, .... When the
selected index changes, the previous web part will be deleted from the
page and the selected web part will be added into the page.
I have tried to use the WebPartPagesWebService to add the selected web
part into my page. Below is a code snippet I have for this:
====================================================================
Sub AddSelectedWebParts(ByVal selectedWebPartXMLFileName As String)
'get the current
Dim curWeb As SPWeb = SPControl.GetContextWeb(context)
Dim curPageUrl As String = curWeb.Url
Dim webpartXML As String =
LoadFile(selectedWebPartXMLFileName)
Dim svc As New mySharepointServer.WebPartPagesWebService
Dim credentail As New
NetworkCredential(Me._sImpersonateLoginName, Me._sImpersonateLoginPWD)
svc.Credentials = New
NetworkCredential(_sImpersonateLoginName, _sImpersonateLoginPWD, "AD")
Dim newPartID As Guid = svc.AddWebPart(curPageUrl, webpartXML,
mySharepointServer.Storage.Shared)
End Sub
here, the body of selectedWebPartXMLFileName is the file I export from
the corresponding web part.
But each time svc.AddWebPart is executed, I get exception. The message

List Temoplate without Title
We are attempting to fill a Scheduling requirement
(First off - I know this might better be done in Outlook, but that is
another tack all together)
We wan a list wher e a user can add an item by selecting theirself from a
lookup of from another list of staff
there would be one date column and a choice column where they could specify
if they are on vacation , phone duty or an out of office assignment
ideally we could connect the out of office assignment entry to a list of
assignments
My problem is that every list template has a primary column of Title.
I want this to be a lookup but Title is a single line of text
Can I create a list or template with a lookup as the primary item,
I would want this to be the value which shows up in a Calendar view
And I dont want the slingle line of text Title at all. Tag: Importing Excel contents into an existing Issue List in WSS Tag: 19831

Windows 2000 Professional Cannot Access SharePoint via UNC
Good day,
We have installed WSS 2003 SP1 on Windows Server 2003.
We created a host header 'websitename' so that users do not have to access
the site via the 'servername.' The servername and the websitename are not the
same. An 'A' record has been created in DNS pointing both servername and
websitename to the same IP address.
We can access a document library via the UNC path, i.e.
\\website\libraryname. All Windows XP machines can access the share. However,
all Windows 2000 Professional machines cannot access the share, returning an
"invalid network path" error.
The same user can login to a Windows XP machine and see the share; yet,
the same user cannot see the share from a Windows 2000 Professional machine.
All users and machines can see the document library via
http://website/libraryname.
All of the client machines have Office 2003 installed.
Is this a known issue, isolated to Windows 2000 Professional? Is there a
fix or a work-around available?

App Root Authentication on Paths Below Virtual Server
I have an App Root below the Sharepoint Virtual Server. I have added the
App Root's path to the Excluded Paths list in the Managed Paths setup. I
have also changed the trust level to "Full" in the App Root's web.config as
well as added the .aspx httpHandlers entry required to get the pages to
work. General ASP.Net pages seem to work, but the one thing that does not
appear to work is the Forms Authentication defined in the App Root's
web.config. Basically it doesn't get enforced redirecting the user to the
login page. My guess is that the sharepoint domain authentication is
somehow causing the App Root to believe its already authenticated but that
is just a guess.
I understand that I can install sharepoint somewhere else on the same
server, but I would rather keep this structure. Is this possible or is the
SharePoint domain authentication going to override the app root regardless
of configuration?

smigrate issues-author, modified by
What are the prereq's for the author, modified by properties to get
migrated when run smigrate.
We are migrating sites to another server.
From the destination server, the logins (of users who are author,
modified by) can be resolved.
What should we do with the source sites to get these properties
migrated when run smigrate? Tag: Importing Excel contents into an existing Issue List in WSS Tag: 19822
"Include Content" disabled?
Hi,
I have a couple of new document libraries in our site. When I try to save
them as templates, "some" of them have the "Include Content" option greyed
out?
- The libraries are definitely not > 10mb - it also happens with a brand
new library with 0, 1 or more documents or folders.
- I am trying to save to a template logged in as the administrator.
- The libraries are originally created from the standard WSS document
library without any modifications
- I cannot find anything on google..
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers,
Brad. Tag: Importing Excel contents into an existing Issue List in WSS Tag: 19818
