I have been trying to get WSS 2.0 installed on a Windows 2003 Standard
Server and I'm getting the same error message over and over on a couple of
the servers when running the SharePoint Central Administrator after the
installation appears to complete. This happens on two of four servers
running a typical install with the following command line to get the data to
be stored on the D:\ drive on the system.

C:\Progra~1\STS2Se~1\setupsts.exe /datadir="D:\STSData\\"

Server Error in '/' Application.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom
error settings for this application prevent the details of the application
error from being viewed.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable
on the local server machine, please create a <customErrors> tag within a
"web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current
web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode"
attribute set to "RemoteOnly". To enable the details to be viewable on
remote machines, please set "mode" to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom
error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's
<customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Follow the instructions in the message you got (and reproduce here) and
amend the web.config file as it says.

When you next get the same problem you will get a more meaningful message.

In my case that message (on a couple of machines) was then a timeout
situation.

But do the change and you'll find out.

Even though I seem to see that error with many .net applications?

I have no idea with .Net applications.

I do know that I have seen this message on several WSS machines (in fact all
test and prod machines = 4 at work, 2 at home). I made the amendment it says
and then later on almost invariably saw (instead) a message saying that
there was a timeout problem (otherwise a different message). I refreshed and
equally invariably the time-out was gone (that time).
