All,

I tried to get answers to this query on "sharepoint.general" newsgroup but
no one responded. Trying my luck here. Apologize for double post!

Thanks,
Rohit

Below is my post:

Hi All,

I made some improvement regarding restoring site from .fwp files. There were
some 150+ .fwp backup files (each averaging around 20-30 MB) which were
numbered in sequential fashion. I ran smigrate program to restore these
files into SharePoint Portal Server 2003 blank site (created by using
SharePoint services which comes along with portal server).

The restoration starts fine (takes around 40 minutes) performing various
tasks and then comes to a section where it has to upload files into the
site. It successfully uploads around 2000+ files before encountering a
problem. There around 16000+ files which needs to be uploaded (according to
smigrate console message). Smigrate keeps out putting this message "Web
server is busy. Please try again. Retrying, bad file <lists the file name>"

This message keeps repeating for rest of the 14000+ files (I think so..never
had a chance to verify this). It then proceeds with successful site
restoration message before coming out of the smigrate.

Nobody is using the web server as I am restoring this site to a dedicated
server with plenty of HDD space and 1 GB RAM. Smigrate is the only program
working with the web server for site restoration. I also checked the site
settings on the web server and everything looked fine. I have set the
connections to unlimited in the IIS.

I haven't applied Service Packs to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or
SharePoint services. Do you think the above problem was because SP was not
applied? Or was something else wrong? Can somebody please guide me on this?

Regards,
Rohit

P.S If I need to apply SP, can somebody send me a link to the SP for both
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and SharePoint Services 2.0 (I think this is
what is shipped with portal server 2003).

Obviously you have SPS 2003.

This newsgroup is for people who are running either the WSS 2.0
*product* or the WSS 3.0 *product*.

Questions from people running SPS 2003 go to the parallel SPS newsgroup
which is microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver

(or indeed to one of the new newsgroups, but that's where you came from)

Yes. I have SPS 2003 but the blank site which I have created is in services
and I am trying restore the backup in a site which is created in sharepoint
services 2.0. I am also assuming that the sharepoint services which comes
along with SPS 2003 is 2.0. Hence the post in this newsgroup.

The WSS that comes with SPS 2003 is indeed WSS 2.0 but that still
doesn't mean that this newsgroup is for people who are running SPS 2003.

There is a clear division.

WSS 2.0 *product* is here

SPS 2003 *product* is .portalserver

Restoring a WSS 2.0 site (whether from the WSS 2.0 product or from the
WSS 2.0 part of SPS 2003) to an installation of SPS 2003 is a *SPS 2003
question.

If you consider it to be both a WSS 2.0 and an SPS 2003 question then
one of the new newsgroups (which are for all SP products) is the place
to post it.

To remind everyone, this is what you wrote "I ran smigrate program to
restore these files into SharePoint Portal Server 2003 blank site" it is
completely clear from this that you are restoring to an SPS 2003
installation.

P.S. "Help" as a Subject is less than useful.

I would like to disagree. If it is WSS 2.0 related question..irrespective
whether it is WSS 2.0 as a product or it is a part of SPS 2003, I would
think this newsgroup was correct for it. Is the underlying
code/functionality different for WSS 2.0 if installed as a stand alone or
clubbed with SPS 2003? I would not think so.

You can disagree all you like.

The fact is that for people like you who refuse to accept that that WSS
newsgroup is for people who have installed a WSS product and the
.portalserver newsgroup is for people who have installed the SPS 2003 or
MOSS 2007 product there are newsgroups available for all products.

If you ask in one of them, no-one will say you have the wrong product
for the newsgroup. (They might however say you have the wrong newsgroup
for the question - if for instance you post an installation question to
.development_and_development)

Why don't you just post your message to
microsoft.public.sharepoint.setup_and_administration

It's an admin question for a SharePoint product after all.

Show me a place where it states that this newsgroup is only for WSS product
only and not WSS with SPS. This is a newgroup for exchanging information and
helping others regarding sharepoint services. If I think that my
product/query falls into this category, I will post it here.

If this was the case, you should have directed me to the newsgoup which you
advised below and not get into an argument why this newgroup is incorrect
for this post in the first place.

My argument is that if it WSS related question, people have right to post it
here.

I advised you in my first reply that you could post to one of the new
newsgroups. As you had already posted to .general,
.setup_and_administration ought to have been the next logical choice.

I can't see why you are arguing. Why not just accept that this newsgroup
is for people who have installed either the WSS 2.0 or WSS 3.0 products
- everyone else has.

You have already been given two suitable newsgroups for your question.
If you post it to one of them with a sensible title you will probably
get an answer to it.

You mix up things and your posts are rude. Most of your responses are not
to the point. This is my opinion. Others feel free to disregard this. I have
my reasons to think why they answers are right. I can continue arguing about
it but not in public. If you wish, we can take this off-line and private.

My Apologies to everyone on this mailing for letting this happen.

Rohit

There's no point in taking this off-line.

You are obviously never going to accept that this is not the right
newsgroup for your question.

You've already been advised as to the two possible newsgroups that are
correct for a admin question for someone running SPS 2003. There's
nothing I can add off-line to that.
