Hi there

I've just installed Sharepoint Services (the latest release including SP2)
on a prestine 2003 Server with SP1 plus SQL 2000 SP4. I opted for utilising
the existing SQL install as opposed to MSDE.

First I created an additional virtual server in IIS to host me WSS sites on
that virtual server, following the instructions in KB 816576. I did this
because otherwise the default Web site will be used and I will not be able
anymore to host 'normal' Web sites (due to the ISAPI filter installed by
WSS). Which is what this article claims anyway:
http://weblogs.asp.net/jan/archive/2004/02/03/66544.aspx.

I then followed the instructions for Single Server Deployment to use an
existing SQL Server as outlined in the Sharepoing Services Admin Guide
(http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsc01.mspx).
When I was finally greeted with the message that the Virtual Server had
successfully been extended I then tried to connect to my new sharepoint
website, and to my dismay was greeted with the following error: "You do not
have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you
supplied because your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header field
that the Web server is not configured to accept. HTTP Error 401.2 -
Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration. Internet
Information Services (IIS)".

Hm. I believe I did all the right things, but obviously something isn't
quite right. While looking for a solution I came across an article which
suggests that using a virtual server is not supported
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;897614) which upset
me a great deal.

Right now I have a situation where I cannot access Sharepoint either locally
on the server nor via the network.

I would very much appreciate if someone could point me in the right
direction.

Many thanks
