    - Saving PDF Document to Website I am attempting to save a PDF document to a web site on a server running IIS6 and WSS. Application pools, configuration and content for the site are located on a second SQL2000 server. Before WSS I would simple click Save AS in Adobe Distiller, navigate to the site (inetPub\wwwroot\website) and store the document in the appropriate folder within the site.     - WSS vs SAP EP Collaboration Hi, I have been doing a comparative analysis of WSS and SAP Enterprise Portal's Collaboration module. I still have a few things unclear. Here's the list: 1. SharePoint sites can become unmanageable as they grow in number. Without the SharePoint Portal, it is cumbersome to manage the disconnected islands that are created. Is this true? 2. WSS lacks in document management capability comapred to SAP. Especially, WSS does not have a strong versioning functionality. I don't know the specifics regarding this statement, just quoting what I read. Is this a valid statement? 3. Searching in WSS is limited to site level. If I need to search across sites, I need the SharePoint Portal. Is this true? 4. And lastly, if you know how well (or otherwise) SAP integrates with MS Office and Windows Instant Messenger, please let me know. Any help on this will be deeply appreciated.     - Interesting idea Yesterday while I was working with Visio 2003, specifically on an organization chart, I wondered about how I could integrate Visio with a WSS list. For instance, with Visio you can import user information from AD, Excel, but can you import from a WSS list? Anyone tried this? The documentaion says "Using WMSDE may be more secure than using SQL Server, because WMSDE cannot be connected to remotely".     - Word template.doc not being found Hello - My WSS Sites don't seem to be integrating with Word out-of-the-box. I have a Word template.doc specified in a document library: Shared Documents/Forms/template.doc (which translates to: http://sharepoint/sites/cs/Shared% 20Documents/Forms/template.doc). When I click on "New Document" in this library, I get this error when Word comes up: "The document name or path not valid Try one or more of the following: * Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly * On the File Menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box. (defaultsavelocation=0_47=http://sharepoi)" The cut-off at "sharepoi" makes it difficult to debug. Apparently I am missing template.doc or something. I can tell you that the server itself does not have Microsoft Word installed, but the client machine I am using where I get this error message does. Thanks very much!     - Looking for "Announcements" Web Part I want to add an "Announcements" web part to my SharePoint portal server, but it's not listed in any Gallery, nor does it appear on a search of available web parts. I checked the Web Component directory on the MS SharePoint site and it says it's bundles into shipping copies. Is it tucked under another web part or otherwise hiding, or am I missing something? I'm testing a trial version of SharePoint atop Win Server 2003 & SQL Server 2000. I don't have Office installed on this server. Thanks.     - SharePoint Site disappeared Have sharepoint services installed as part of SBS2003 installation. All was fine till I tried to put the sharepoint site on a new IP address. Now http://companyweb doesnt respond at all. In Sharepoint Central Admin I can see the site and apparently administer it ok but cant access it by http:// & IP address which is what I need.. Would be grateful for any tips or advice on how to make it viewable again or to trash it completely and create a new top-level site using the specific IP I need it on.     - add app as a service in Win 2003 I am trying to install an application as a service in Windows 2003. I have installed the Win 2003 Resource Kit (the freebee, without registering) and I still cannot figure out how to add a new service. I know in Win 2K you can use srvinstw.exe to add a service, but this exe doesn't seem exists in my version of Win 2003 Resource Kit. In Win 2K the srvinstw.exe opened up a wizard that allowed me to enter the desired info and it added the service into the registry, does Win 2003 have this ability? If not, any other ideas?     - Issues List Customization I've setup an issues list to help in problem tracking. I want the "Requestor" field in the list to automatically be populated with the person that's logged in (LOGON_USER server variable). In addition I want people to be able to specify a different value. I've created the "Requestor" field as a choice allowing people to specify their own value but want users names populated from the server variable rather than the choices i've manually entered. I've gone down this road before.. i'm thinking I need to create a web part or something that contains the LOGON_USER value and than reference that value from within my list...     - Struggling with DWTs I want to create a series of pages with identical navigation areas across the top & down the left hand side. Ideal use for DWTs, I thought. So I took the default.aspx page, edited it to strip out the bits I didn't want in the template, defined the editable regions & saved the dwt. I then created a new .aspx page & attached the previously created dwt file. Where there should be some WSS bits like the link to the portal, the Modify Shared Page menu, etc, I'm getting errors like: WebPartPages:SettingsLink - the Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.SettingsLink class does not derive from the Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.WebPart class and therefore cannot be imported or used in a WebPartZone control.     - Summary View sort order woes I have the stnadard Links web part. I can not get the items in that list to be ordered as I need them when shown in "Summary View". I added a field called Sort Order where I put a 1-5 in then sorted by that field. But this only shows up when you go into the Links.aspx page itself.     - hiding "Site Settings" link from readers Is there a way to programatically hide the Site Settings link for users (like a Reader) that have no business seeing it? <rant>This is probably the thing I hate the most about Windows Sharepoint Services in SPS2003. I know there is a "My Information" section under Site Settings that any registered user should be able to access, but why show ALL of the options to users who don't have rights to perform those actions? Furthermore, why even let them access the pages for those actions. To most people it appears as if they are able to do things they shouldn't.     - Moving WSS2.0 to Another Server I need to move my Windows SharePoint Services from one server to another (the second having a bigger hard drive). I would just burn an image, but management has decided that the name of the link needs to be changed (the server is, let's say, \\SHAREPOINT\XYZCOMPANY; it needs to be \\SHARE\NEWCOMPANY). Both of these servers are already running Windows 2003 Server. Can anyone let me know a sure-fire way to do this? I've tried two things: (1) Using the SMIGRATE utility, which seems to be only for STS1.0. (2) Trying the steps in Microsoft's knowledge base article number 825536, which I thought would work, but for some reason, in FrontPage 2003, the option of Tools - Server is grayed out.     - Prompted for Credentials I've got a top level site with the people added. No problem. My WSS server is in an NT 4.0 domain that fully trusts the CORP domain. A few people, even when logged into the CORP domain and added to the site, keep getting prompted for credentials. I even had them logon to my workstation. Prompted over and over. I logged on. No problem. Is this a WSS problem or maybe where their account is located in AD and how that type of trust authentication works? Deleting them from the site and re-adding them does nothing.     - Moving a top-level site to a sub-site I've run into an issue that I cannot seem to solve, short of using Frontpage 2003 to do a backup and restore. Which works, but the permissions of the site are not kept. Here's what exists now: AATS (top level site) EC (top level site) What I want: AATS (top level site) EC (sub-site) I've got a full backup of EC using the STSADM.exe. When I attempt to use that utility to put the site as a sub-site of AATS I receive the following error: C:\temp>"c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\60\bin\stsadm.exe" -o restore -url http://teamservices/sites/aats/ec/ -filename D:\WssBackups\ec\ec.dat -overwrite You cannot create the root Web "http://teamservices/sites/aats/ec" unless an explicit inclusion or a proper wildcard inclusion is defined.     - web part dev I want to start developing web parts for my WSS site. So I downloaded the Web Part Templates. I get this prompt when trying to install "enter the path to the folder containing "Microsoft.Sharepoint.dll"" I don't have this file on my computer. I DO have Visual Studio.net. I'm not trying to create webparts on the server but rather create them on my machine and move them to the server. The server is a dedicated one through a hosting company. Is there a way to install the web part template on my machine? My understanding is that I need it in order to choose create-web Part Library in visual studio.net. Please help!     - Document Library read or post errors. I had trouble beefore with document libraries and I had to reinstall all of WSS and then everything seemed to work. That is until I tried to figure out why our outside sales people coming in thru the VPN couldn't log onto the SharePoint site. I made two changes to the WSS site in IIS Admin. First I changed on the Document Security tab to Add Digest Authentication and then I checked Basic Authentication (Clear Text) When This didn't change anything I changed the settings back to just Integrated Windows Authentication only. Now no one (incl. Administrator) can open documents and no one can upload new documents etc. same issues as before. Config: Windows 2003 Web Edition, SQL 2000 running on a separate server (2003 Advanced) All updates applied. This is realllllly getting old and I need to find out why this is happening and a solution to fix it w/o reinstalling WSS and going thru a lengthy install process and wiping out information already uploaded to WSS site.     - User Accounts and Email Background: We are currently running Sharepoint Team Services running in non-AD mode, on a 2k3 Server backended with a seperate SQL 2k box in a 2000 Domain (Mixed Mode ~200 Users soon to be ~1100+) with Office 2k3 clients and Exchange 5.5. Scenario: I have created a new list based on the Issues List that is temporarily replacing our current ticket system as we migrate our desktops to XP and Exchange server to 2k3. In this list we have two drop-down Lookup fields that uses the User Information Display Name for the "Resolved by" and "Assigned to" fields. In order for those fields to be populated properly I have found that either A) I need to manually create each user or B) When a user visits the site their account is created but they manually have to change their email address in their profile. Neither choice is ideal but it makes more sense for us to add the users as we all know not all users comply to tech requests. The problem though with creating new users manually, is that if I add them via Address book I need to then add 200 logon names manually. On the same note, if I add a domain group it only binds the authentication but does not break up the members into seperate accounts(understandable). Real Question 1: Is there a way to upload a list of users in bulk in Sharepoint that contains both Logon name and Email? (Are Exchange 2003 or AD 2k3 required?) Real Question 2: Does this seem logical to you (and will it be fixed) that each user has to be added to Sharepoint individually as Microsoft has always pushed to use group membership assignments over individual accounts. Ex. Why would I want to add each individual user just to have it populate a list when if it tied to AD I could just add the Domain Users group and assign the Reader rights to the group (it could pull the members from the group to populate the list) then create cross-site groups to manage users that need additional permissions to web parts and sites. Seems a little assanine to me and an administrative headache especially for companys with a lot of users. (Unless Sharepoint Portal Server fixes this issue, I'm surprised in the architecture) Believe me, we have Crystal Enterprise Server and this is a big enough headache for the same reason, at least CE though synchs with AD.     - Default permissions in My Site SharePoint creates a Private and Shared document library when a new My Site is created. The Shared doc lib comes up with Reader, Contributor and Web Designer as the default site groups with permissions. Can anyone tell me how to control/set those default permissions at the time of creation? I.e. when My Site creates the Shared doc lib, we want it to create the lib without any permissions assigned at all.     - howto delete a zone Working in WSS, using the default sites created by SBS 2003, I can't figure out how to delete a "zone" from a page within WSS itself. The Modify Shared Page submenu items let you remove all webparts from a zone, but the zone persists.     - Need help with folders Part of the company is setting up a document repository relating to the products we sell. I've created a doclib per product and each doclib has a similar folder structure within it in order to provide some sense of where different documents should be stored. As our sales people need leading by the hand, the contributors have asked for a description field to be added so that they can put an explanation of what the document contains. So far, so good - it is easy to do that and easy to get the description displayed alongside the file. The problem is that folders don't follow that model - you can only enter the folder name and that's that. Faced with the problem, the contributors have built the description into the folder name so you end up with something like: Presentations - includes customer presentations and presentations for internal use only, these will be clearly labelled. It looks OK on the screen but the URLs are getting long and, guess what, you get to the point where you can't submit a file because the total length has exceeded the maximum.     - tracking when open/view event occurs for documents Hi all, I am doing asked to produce a report on who opens a particular page and when. The scenario goes as this- my company has a new policy and procedure and everyone must read it. Now it is my job as the Sharepoint administrator to track who has and who hasn't open/viewed the document so that the bosses can prove that the memo was read by all employees (roughly 200).     - Outlook and document workspaces I really like the idea of shared attachments in Outlook - attach a file and you can store it in a document workspace and, if the workspace copy gets updated, the recipient of the email can easily get the document. What I *don't* like, however, is Outlooks insistence that a fresh workspace must be created every time. Why can't it support the concept of a document being stored in an existing document library? What is it about document workspaces that ordinary WSS sites with doclibs don't support? It totally negates the benefits as far as I can tell.     - SPFile.TimeLastModified returns wrong time I have written a web service that returns the last edited documents in a document library. The web sevice works perfect in every way, except that all time stamps is 2 hours less than they should be. It is really ALL time stamps, TimeLastModified, TimeCreated, Created (on all versions). Everything is 2 hours behind! The clock on the server is correct, WSS own GUI shows the right time everywhere, WSS own webservices returns the correct time stamps on all items ... it is only the time stamps I get in my own web service that are messed up.     - Publish from source location to existing workspace I keep all my documents in the toplevel domain. This is where they are edited and stored by internal users. I need to give to external users access only certain documents that are stored in the top level domain according to their login(wss is published through ISA server). ex. doc x, y and z are located in a doc lib in the toplevel domain, I want to allow external user1 to login preferrably to a subsite that he has access to (because i don't want user1 to have access to the top level site) so he has read only access to doc x and y not doc z. I was able to accomplish this with a document workspace that was published for doc x and add user1 as a user. But i cannot figure out how to add doc y to the workspace and i cann't figure out how to edit doc x from the toplevel and have the changes show in the document workspace that user1 has access to. It seems that adding any more than TWO criteria to the <Or> node causes a "Cannot complete this action. Please try again." error.     - Problems with office integration - document library I am on a WSS site as an administrator. When I click on a Word document in a document library my browser opens it. I would like to have things setup so that Word documents (or PDF, etc) are opened in their separate, native application (Microsoft Word in this case) when I click on them. I realize that I can't group by a choice field that allows multiple
selections. Any thoughts on workarounds? I've got a contacts list that
includes a multi-choice field to track employee committee assignments. I'd
like to create a view that groups people by this field.
