I don't want the Reader Site Group of my portal site to add or edit items.
That's easy to set up. But I would like to make an exception for the
Discussion -- here they shoud be able to participate.

When I try to change the Site Groups Rights for Readers there is no
distinction between Discussions and other items.

How do I solve this?

Open your discussion list

Modify settings ...

Change Permissions for this discussion board

Click on Reader

Amend Reader to View, insert, edit, delete items

(Next time please look at the product a bit before posting - this wasn't
rocket science, I didn't know the answer and it took me less than a minute
to find it)

Mike,

Do you own this NG or something? Last time I looked it was public. Relax a
little there on the "advice". Just because you run a well known FAQ doesn't
give you a license to be rude to everyone. Nearly every one of your posts
has something to say about the post, the poster or your definition of
"netiquette"; but rarely about the question asked. If you don't know the
answer, refrain from posting.

Quality over quantity.

Thank you.

- Oisin

Look at then all and then work out how many don't answer the question.

What's wrong with this answer for instance ?

It says exactly what to do. Step by step.

What kind of answers do you want ?

I'm not talking about the answer Mike, it's the comments in brackets you
placed afterwards about how they "should look harder before posting" and
that it "only took you one minute to find". Not everyone is familiar with
SharePoint. Its UI is scattered and difficult to navigate as a beginner to
the system. That's why the NG is here: for beginners as well as the more
advanced users. The spirit of usenet is about help, not sarcastic and rude
comments. So keep them to yourself. Please.

Oisin,

I totally agree! 9 times out of 10 Mike's posts are to let the user know
it's in the wrong NG and he stops there. I believe Mike is very well
educated in several key MSFT technologies. Too bad he doesn't try to share
his knowledge a little more than he does.

'fraid not.

I just have a reasonably good grasp of what is in WSS and thus by extension
what isn't.

I'll try to cut out the comments - a visitor to ATE at Tech-Ed Europe said
I was much nicer in person :)

(in this case there were two postings within five minutes from the same
person, both of which I answered with I think correct answers but both of
which seemed to be coming from someone new to the product. I thought I was
encouraging him to play around with it a bit rather than simply posting a
question right away as in the case of his second question - obviously in
language that offended some of you. I suspect the only way to avoid that is
to cut way down on my postings.)

Mike,

Perhaps an alternative to the text in brackets could have been.
(i found the answers to your question, aswell as many more in the 'help'
section of your wss site)

leaving out the "rocket science" would be helpful.

Like I said before, you appear to be very knowledgeable in these areas. I
hope for the sake of myself and others you continue to share the knowledge.

just my thoughts.

This is what I'm looking for, but I can't find it(!?)
My options at this point is:
Change general settings
Save discussion board as template
Delete this discussion board
Select a portal area for this discussion board

In General Settings I can't find anything on permissions. Am I looking in
the right direction at all?

I'll admit that I'm a total newbie, I've (just) spend half a day with this
version on the product and I'm still having a hard time getting used to it.
Working on it though!

I'm just opening my portable and Virtual PC to get access to a site there so
please hang on for a reply.

I'm wondering meanwhile if you are running standalone WSS as I am or
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 where the answer may (=I don't know) vary.
Certainly I'm wondering a bit about your choice of

"Select a portal area for this discussion board"

in your general settings.

I want step-by-step answers! :-)

If it wasn't for people like Mike Walsh who takes the time to answer even
very simple questions, this newsgroup would be a lot less usefull.

Hmmm ... Am I in the wrong newsgroup here?

OK. Site now open.

By Modify settings I meant exactly "modify settings and columns".

I get in the General Settings section

Title:
Web Address:
Document Template:
Desription:
On QuickLaunch Bar: (Yes)
Generate Versions: (Yes)
Content Approval Required (No)

followed by

Change general settings
Save discussion board as template
Change permissions for this discussion board
Delete this discussion board

---------------

I'm beginning to think that maybe I was right and you are not using
standalone Windows SharePoint Services.

If you are using SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (I don't have a copy (yet) in
VPC I can look at to see) then this question at least should be asked in
their newsgoup (microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver) as if that's the
case the answer would seem to be different for that product.

I don't know but I suspect that if you create a discussion list however in a
WSS site within SPS 2003 you will see there the same options I see in
standalone WSS - perhaps you could try that first if you are at the moment
creating your discussion list with the top SPS 2003 layer.

My intermediate reply should give you the options as I mostly assume there
that you are probably using SPS 2003.

Most questions on the WSS "layer" of SPS 2003 can be asked in either place
(and might be better located here). The ones to send to the SPS 2003
newsgroup would be ones about installation; WSS in connection with SPS 2003;
and about various things that are only in SPS 2003 and not in WSS such as
"My Site"; Areas; Exchange/Outlook web parts and a few more.

There are four main products that include WSS (including SPS 2003 that
includes a WSS layer; SBS 2003 and Project Server 2003 both of which include
WSS plus a few extra web parts) and most of their WSS problems are common
between them and those can thus be asked here (as can questions specific to
standalone WSS such as installation of that).

I hope this is somewhat clear - it's a murky grey line.

I just found that newsgroup -- and I'll ask my question there.

This confuses me a bit. Where do I chose which layer to use?

Thanks for your time.

I am by no means a SPS 2003 expert. However in SPS 2003 you can create WSS
sites (which are then in the "WSS 'layer'") - the discussion lists in those
WSS sites probably have the same options as the discussion lists I am seeing
in standalone WSS.

Discussion Lists created in SPS 2003 itself (i.e. not in a WSS site and thus
in the "SPS 'layer'")) presumably don't.

Is that clearer ?

["Layer" is not an official term!]
