    - Alerts & permissions I'm having a problem with alerts and permissions: Iâ??d like users to be able to submit list items, and be able to only view & edit their own. Iâ??d like members of a special group and the administrator to be able to view, edit and delete all list items, and set alerts to be notified when a user submits a new list item. So, I set list item level permissions to â??read ownâ?? & â??edit own.â?? As expected, the users can see only their own, and the administrator can see everyoneâ??s. Yet the administrator cannot set an alert to the list. An error page appears, stating : "You cannot create alerts for lists for which users can only read their own items." If the administrator has permissions to view and edit items, why canâ??t he be alerted of a new item? Is there something I can modify on the permissions to solve this?     - Sharepoint List Question Ok, I have a company directory that is currently hosted in lotus notes. I have imported this information into a sharepoint list but the problem is that some of the fields contain data seperated by a ; Ex) States Registered In: CA;CO;IA I would like to accomplish 2 things: 1) Display a web part/data view of the list that is grouped by the states So the grouping would contain the states like: CA - CO - IA - Instead of CA;CO;IA - Also to allow filtering in the same fashion.     - Explorer View does not show documents, only the menu Hello, when opening the Explorer View in IE 6 under Windows XP, the view takes very long to open, then shows only the left-hand menu but not the documents. If I click on My Documents on the left-hand menu, they are shown ok in the view (so, the view itself seems to work, and the view shows quite quickly).     - Cannot connect to the configuration database Problem: When connecting to Sharepoint website via web browser, following message is displayed: "Cannot connect to the configuration database." After a few weeks of running fine, all of a sudden the Sharepoint app is unable to connect to the WMSDE database, and there are no obvious indiciations as to the problem. The MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service starts up fine and no errors are logged in ERROLOG or NT event log, however it is impossible to connect to the database using the Sharepoint user or admin website, OSQL, or the sharepoint STSadmn tool. The only way that I have been able to temporarily resolve the problem is to: - uninstall Sharepoint - uninstall WMSDE - reinstall Sharepoint and WMSDE - restore the Sharepoint db using the command STSADM.EXE -o restore Everything then works fine again for a weeks util the same problem resurfaces.     - NEED HELP: WSS Search List and filter resultant listitems... Hi All, I am trying to find a method to specify a list, then filter and sort the listItems based on an expression such as 'ga' would return again, garet, garnet, and so on. I have tried wssDAL and it works fine in windows, but when I converted it into ASPX it didn't like listItem (seemed to conflict with something) but I did get it to return Lists, just not listItems..... I have tried getListItem, which seems to be a good fit, but cannot find a complete project, just tid-bits. The vb/c# code is semi-understandable but then it goes into XML/CAMAL and that's where I loose it. I'm assuming the preferred method to get items froma list is via webservice, but a good example would be helpful. Is there by chance a way to access it via SQL Server? I'm comfortable in SQL.     - Adobe IFilter with WSS in SBS using SQL Server - help please Hi, I am trying to get our SBS based WSS to index pdf files. I have downloaded and installed IFilter 6 from Adobe but the instructions tell me to "Add PDF as a file type to be included in the content index". Various sources talk about using the "SharePoint Site Settings Page, in the Search Settings and Indexed Content" section. I can't find this and assume it must be a Portal Server version configuration. How do I do it in WSS? Other sources talk about the need for re-indexing and I seem to need some assistance here to. The application tracks POs, Invoices etc. The POs are generated elsewhere, but there are nightly batch feeds to our system. We have different user levels, with different permissions. Now, we want to know if this application can be built in WSS (Is it really required or not). f the application is built using WSS, will there be any plus points (in terms of non-functional requirements like performance, availability etc) when compared to the application developed without WSS (i.e., developed using pure ASP.NET and SQL server)?     - Form Validation Error Hi all, I'm receiving a form validation error when attempting to upload a doc with a '#' in the finlename to a shared library in WSS sp1. My understanding was that this issue has been resolved in sp1. The error: ?------------ Form Validation Error Please correct the information you provided by following these steps, then submit the information again: The URL 'Shared Documents/New Wordpad # Document.doc' is invalid. It may refer to a nonexistent file or folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current Web. ?------------ The server is running W2k3sp1, slipstreamed, (non-slipstreamed is not an option) Windows Sharepoint Services, sp1, slipstreamed (as provided of the MS website) WMSDE, as provide by the above install.     - List Converted to XSLT - Title is not always the same I've created a list (referrals) on my sharepoint site then wanted to change the format of the view. I went into FrontPage Converted it to an XSLT and did my changes. Now when you first load the page the Title of the page shows up as 'Our Families', which is another list, then you hit F5 to refresh and it changes to 'Referrals' hit F5 again and it could be either. Check it out: http://www<dot>redthreaddreamers<d o t>com The list contents is always the 'Referrals' content. though the name changes between 'Referrals' and 'Our Families' when it displays 'Our Families' the links on the left nav bar are also related to the 'Our Families' list. A buddy of mine on a different sharepoint site (though the same Server) wanted to also modify a list, and the same type of issue is happening to him. Is there something we are missing?     - Can someone explain how to use a file server as a backend server for WSS 2003?     - First Site Load - 2mg Download of Files - SPS vs WSS Hello, WSS has a large 2mg download the first time that you open the site. This causes the site to open extremely slowly (30 to 45 seconds).     - *IMPORTANT* More on .chm issue There has been a recent tread pertaining to .chm help files stored on a Windows SharePoint Server or SharePoint Portal Server and the contents will not display. A KB article was identified to have the solution. That solution works but has a flaw and it is known my MS. They will sending out an article shortly. We tried to implement the solution with no success. We then contacted a Performance Support Engineer with MS's Enterprise Platform Support. He said the fix was to create a registry key with the following values: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions] "MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000003 This opens the zones: local machine, local intranet, trusted sites and internet. MS (in writing) declared that this solution is NOT RECOMMENDED because it opens you to internet vulnerabilities.     - viewing shared docs but hiding other users in workgroup?? We're experiencing a problem with a sharepoint site that stores docs for customers related to various deals. These custs are bidding against each other and need to be anonymous to each other. But when a user opens a shared document using Office2003, they see the shared workspace task bar that reveals all the other interested parties. Any ideas for strategies for hiding this information? These are customer machines so they're not under our control. And I should add that this site uses the win2003 version of SP and not the full Portal.     - Change Sharepoint URL to FQDN with Subsites I have a Windows Sharepoint Services server running. When I first set it up, I apparently configured it so that it was only accessible using the url: http://sps1 We have since created a subsite (http://sps1/subsite) I would like to be able to access both of these sites using the fully qualified domain name of the server, e.g.: http://sps1.domain.com and http://sps1.domain.com/subsite I tried just adding a host header to the virtual server in Internet Services manager, but this does not work. (I have since reverted that change, so I have now made no changes). Is there a specific sharepoint supported procedure for making it possible to access the sharepoint site and subsite via the FQDN instead of the hostname? Thanks.     - Cotnent Editor Web Part - unwanted caching I am using the Content Link functionality of the Content Editor web part to pull in an HTML snippet from another server. It seems that the content is getting cached. The HTML snippet was updated, but the old content is still showing up in the Content Editor Web Part. When I click "Test Link", I see the new content, but the page shows the old. Is there any way to control (turn off) this caching behavior?     - Sharepoint Services and NLB Error Hi, I have Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with SP1 configured in a NLB mode. SPS 2003 is running web and search components on these two servers. Each of the Server is running the web and search component. Sharepoint Services is runinng 6.02.6411 version. When I open a browser and access the virtual IP address , it gives a login Pop-up and after I put the correct credentials , it gives me a page not found error. If I continue to refresh the page for couple times, the sharepoint portal site loads of fine. The portal site is installed of the Default Web Site and I have tried the Default Website running on both the virtual IP and the ALL unassigned in IIS. But whenever I access the sharepoint portal site by accessing a particular node, it works fine. To make sure that NLB is working fine, I created a generic site with a html page and its works fine.     - adding items to a document library Hi, I receive the following error when I tried to create a new item to put within a list: "To add an item to a document library, use SPFileCollection.Add()" From what I undestand, the SPFileCollection Add method is used to upload a file in a document library, which is not what I want to do.     - How to customize the look of the Calendar Hello, my apologies if this has already been answered but I have not yet found an answer. I would like to customize the Calendar. Is it possible to do this using FrontPage? For example, I would like the text of the items that appear in the calendar to wrap. Currently, only about 16 or so characters are visible.     - Version Restore No File with URL Hello! I have a document library with version tracking enabled. There is a spreadsheet within this document library that needs to have a previous version restored. When Restore is selected from the dropdown menu for the file in the Versions listing, the following error appears: There is no file with URL '<Name of DL>/<Name of File>' in this Web. But, but...huh? I created a test document library with version tracking turned on and put a brand new spreadsheet with a small amount of data in it. I changed the spreadsheet and then restored the prior version without any problems. I also created a document library in which I uploaded the file mentioned in the error above. The same error occurred on the new library when trying to restore a prior version. It seems to be tied to the file, but I am not totally convinced of that. On the other hand, I have a server where I had Front Page Server Extensions and hosting web pages (programmed in ASP.NET). Well.. I now realize I created the Users's Display Name in the wrong format (created John Smith but it should be Smith, John).     - Page on WSS Site cant make up its mind what to display? I've created a list (referrals) on my sharepoint site then wanted to change the format of the view. I went into FrontPage Converted it to an XSLT and did my changes. Now when you first load the page the Title of the page shows up as 'Our Families', which is another list, then you hit F5 to refresh and it changes to 'Referrals' hit F5 again and it could be either.     - Domain\username prompt We have 2 domains parent.com and child.parent.com wss is installed on a server in the child.parent.com and is working fine. I can pass through fine when connecting through the parent domain. But if I am on a server in the child domain it prompts me for a username and password. Not sure why it is not passing authentication throught. when it prompts the use sername is the DNS entry that we added for the redirect to sharepoint (sharepoint.parent.com) Antother thing that is odd is that the account that sharepoint was originally installed under never gets prompted it passes right through. Is there any way to keep SharePoint library folders from showing up in
explorer? I.e. When I go to Windows Explorer, under My Network Places,
I see "Shared Documents...". Can I prevent this in any way?

You could delete the Shared Documents list <running and ducking>

But seriously My Network Places reflects what is logically (logically as
really stored in the database) in the path below the web site. If you have
such a WSS List, you have such a logical directory so I can't see how you
can avoid seeing it it you haven't deleted it.

Anyone know better?
