The astonishing aspect of this issue is that it started overnight after 2
years of using STS flawlessly. Here is the event I get:

Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description:
Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.1289, stamp 41afccc8,
faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1289, stamp 41afea95, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00028679.

This event appears anyone tries to access the site. The page they get reads:

Server Application Unavailable

The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is
currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser
to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific
request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server.
Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur

I have found no information other than this issue has reported as fixed in
SP1 and SP2 for STS and I have SP2 loaded with the same results.

Running Windows Server 2003 Standard SP1, v.1289

Anyone know anything about this or have run it to it themselves?

Any help is much appreciated!

I think that you are actually using Windows SharePoint Services (WSS),
despite you saying that you have been using "STS" for 2 years (and that you
have "SP1 and SP2 for STS").

Can you confirm that this is the case before we look at the problem?

Yes you are correct, we are using WSS.
