I have a list with several fields, including 2 "lookup" fields. The first
one allows the user to select an item from another custom list defined in
the same site. The second one allows the user to select a person from the
"User Information" list (which seems to be a built-in list containing the
users of the site).

These fields seem to work fine when adding and editing items. The user can
assign values to the fields by selecting from the drop-down lists.

But, when editing in DataSheet view, the drop-down for the first "lookup"
field (the one listing items defined in a different custom list) is always
empty! The second drop-down (the one containing users from the "User
Information" list, works fine.

Why can't items from my custom list be selected while in DataSheet view? Is
my custom list somehow different from the built-in "User Information" list?

Thanks for any direction!
-Joel

I would imagine that with the above you have answered your own question.

But it would be interesting if someone would come up with a quote from the
on-line help file or the admin guide to confirm this. Anyone with a good
memory (or search skills) ?

I would but I just found this in the Admin help file...

this document may be reproduced, stored in or introduced
into a retrieval system, or transmitted in any form or by
any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying,

I guess my wrights under copyright allow me to copy and
publish this very small percentage of the original work.

Did you know you can decompile a chm file into html and
save it in a document library. Just check the copyright
first...

I've already (about six months ago) pointed out to MS that the combination
of this clause and WSS is not a happy one.

Several people up a chain said this was (although they didn't use the word)
crazy. But they were unable to get a blanket ruling through that everybody
could post MS documents on their sites - at least none that came back to me.
I suggest people / companies wanting to do this (put MS documents on their
WSS sites) should ask for individual permission.

But quoting small bits of Admin Guides is (ought to be) completely OK.

Ok, I figure out why this wasn't working.
It was actually a problem on the WSS server. The custom lists could not be
correctly pulled from the server to populate the dropdown for the lookup
field (in Datasheet View).

I had an old version of stssoap.dll (or something like that) that was left
over from a BETA version of Share Point Portal Server 2003 that I had
unistalled a while ago.

Using gacutil.exe to uninstall the old dll and reinstall the new stssoap.dll
from the WSS install (on the server) fixed the problem.
