Hi,
In fact, Word downloads the file from the server into the client box.
However, it stores the file at the folder "termporary internet file" and
the file name will be changed. For accurately locating the file and its
position, you can use the filemon from Sysinternals.com to monitor the file
activity of Word during opening the file from doclib. You can search the
log using the keyword ".doc".

From my test, when I open one doc file "test.doc" from my doclib. It is
downloaded into the folder with one different name as below (from the
filemon log):
959 9:27:48 AM WINWORD.EXE:4916 OPEN C:\Documents and Settings\v-wdxu\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\YUGF7A82\KPCWMA1Z\Offline\i\000003e1.DOC
SUCCESS Options: OpenIf Access: All
960 9:27:48 AM WINWORD.EXE:4916 OPEN C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\V-WDXU\LOCAL
SETTINGS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\YUGF7A82\KPCWMA1Z\OFFLINE\I\000003E1.DOC
SUCCESS Options: Open Access: All
