I would like to put about 40GB of files in a Sharepoint site running Windows
2003 Standard with SQL2005 Express. Can I do this. I will follow the
suggested max files per folder of 1,000 and max file size of say 50mb. Is
there a total max on size of all files and folders. I've seen some sites say
max file size can be 2GB but nothing says total max storage.

How will this affect storage, and how big does the server need to be.

I'm moving all of the file storage for a large company to sharepoint. Has
anyone else done this in this way and how did it work out. What were they
server specs. I've read alot of the Microsoft BP documents and understand the
total numbers, bt they don't say anything about total size. GB's...

Thanks,

Jeremy

40 GB of files in a single instance of WSS is not too much. There is 500
GB of data in the deployment of WSS that I manage however we use SQL 2000
SP3a so I can't comment on how SQL 2005 Express will manage.

You should not, however, upload all the data to a single site collection.
Read this:

If you can divide the data into multiple site collections and multiple
content databases, it will align with the suggested deployment strategies.

I'm almost certain SQL Server 2005 Express has a limit of 4GB for the
database.

He should use WMSDE if he wants a free database system with no database size
limits.

But for that amount of data I too - like you - would go for SQL Server 2K
(or 2005).

WSS might not be the best tool for a file storage. Since all files go into
a database and are indexed there is some overhead involved. What kinds of
files are they? WSS is really positioned for collaboration, not storage.
Unless it's a lot of Office documents or something that can benefit from the
search capabilities of WSS, I'd consider something else.

Most all of it is excel and word. The excel I hope to move to infopath and
sharepoint and remove the need for files.
