Locating .Net apps inside the Sharepoint IIS virtual server
We have just started running WSS3.0 for our Intranet (http://intranet).
We have several reports written with .NET (aspx pages) that are located on a
different IIS server
We need to have the URL's for the aspx pages to be http://intranet/reports
These pages are not going to be elements within Sharepoint, we just want to
use the Sharepoint server as a web server hosting the aspx files. So far we
cannot get it to work because the webconfig of the Sharepoint server takes
precedence and the aspx pages needs different settings.
How do we get IIS/Sharepoint to exclude a folder? WSS 2.0 had a method to
exclude a folder/path. WSS 3.0 does not have the same

column settings
In base columns we have a column titled start date. This evidently
feeds most lists/calendars. The box that said "update all list columns
based on this site column" was checked "yes". Then someone unchecked
that box. Now it is not available in any list/calendar and the only
way I can get it to come back is to customize the new, edit and
display form and that does not work perfectly. Anyone know how this
can be resolved? Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67793
SharePoint Audit Data Table (dbo.AuditData)
We have a heavy used site that has all auditing enabled (Site Actions, Site
Settings, Modify All Site Settings, Site Collection Audit Settings, All items
checked under Events to audit)
This has caused the table dbo.AuditData in our WSS_WebApp_Content1 database
to become very large. Currently is has 135,614,755 records and is 33.8 GB in
size!
I have seen other posts where info on this table has been requested, but
nobody is responding. Some users thought that items were deleted out of it
after 30 days, this is nottrue. We have items in it dating back more than 6
months.
Here are my main questions:
- Is there any risk to moving this data out of this table into an archival
database?
- If we uncheck events to audit, will it automatically remove the space?
- Is there a way to automatically clear it after X days (without writing SQL
jobs)?
- How does this affect performance? Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67787

Change redirect URL?
Is it possible to change the redirect URL during a gradual migration from
WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0 without killing the migration/web app and starting
everything over again?
I see in the SiteMap table in the WSS 3 config database, there is a column

Install WSS3.0 to SQL 2005 Standard
I'm attempting to install WSS 3.0. I do not want to use the embeded

moving document libraries from WSS 2.0 to MOSS 2007: how?
Hi,
I have been tasked with creating a MOSS 2007 site that centralizes
department information that is now scattered on file shares, plain old
HTML pages, and some WSS 2.0 sites. The WSS 2.0 sites run on a
different web server, but it is in the same domain.
There are some document libraries on the old WSS sites (but not all of
them) that I would like to "migrate" to the MOSS site. It is not
feasible to download all individual documents and upload them again to
the new site. First because of the large number, and second because I
need to keep the user and modification date intact. If I just upload,
they will all be on my name on today.
So how can I achieve this goal? Also, I am not an administrator on
either of the WSS/MOSS servers, I am just the "owner" of a MOSS site.
TIA,

Login problems for external users
Internally everyone who should have access get access without logging in, but
we have external users using our WSS using VPN. Since they login to their

Word 2007 Won't directly open documents from Sharepoint
A few of my users (consultants) are using Office 2007. When they click on a
document in my sharepoint document library the document will not open.
Instead Word opens and just sits there.
However if they do "download a copy" they can open the document just fine

It's not a permissions issue since they have complete access to the site and
can upload/download documents just fine.

Agenda ID or ID Column - How to restart to 1 in a Recurring Meeting
I am using SharePoint 3.0 as an Admin or with Full Control. I have a

bug with custom list from site collection template
Hi.
I have a problem. Then I create a site collection from template I
can't make my custom list web part to appear in my favourite view.
Here is my sequence:
1. Create custom list
2. Add some columns.
3. Make a custom view with some number of columns.
4. Add a custom list web part on home page.
5. Change custom list web part and select my custom view.
6. Save site collection as a template.
7. Create site collection from template.
And I see my custom list, but with only one column - "Name". It is not
the view that is in the template.
Yes. The custom view exists and I can change it manually on every site
I create, but it is very strange behavior for Sharepoint.
What's the trick? Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67711
Authentication: the Torture Never Stops
I'm really not having any luck designing authentication for my sharepoint
site: we have a wss 3.0 site for our intranet and then subsites for each of
our customers to log into and view team disscussions and documents. The goal
is for internal users to be able to open the intranet site using domain
credentials and without needing to give a username and password. On the
outside I would like customers to be able to come in and just give username
and password. Additionally when opening documents I don't want any
authentication dialog boxes to come up.
After alot of work, the internal portion is working - employees can open IE
and get into their resources without re-entering a username and password.
They cannot get where they don't belong.
However, when customers try to login remotely (http over the inet) they are
being required to give their username in a <domain name>\<username> format.
Security is set up:
IIS - Integrated Windows and Digest Authentication.
Sharepoint through Site Admin - IIS has Integrated Windows with NTLM and
Type is Windows.
IE trusts the site(s).
MVP Todd Klindt earlier suggested I use Basic Authentication, but I had a
problem with opening documents (security prompt) which KB 871155 had me
uncheck Basic in sharepoint Central Admin. Also, it's clear text and I
didn't really want to use SSL, so I chose Digest Authentication which I
understood to be kind of the same but secure.
Just to make things more fun the whole shooting match has already been
pushed into production, so I am limited as to how much boat rocking I can
do...
Thanks for plowing through all that! Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67706
Search within Documents WSS 3.0 - SQL 2005
Hello,
I am running WSS 3.0 with SQL 2005 on a separate server. I would like
WSS to return the results if it finds my search term inside the
document. I thought this work when I had installed it in a previous
life, but I am wondering if I forgot to enable something on this
install.
If I am searching for the word test1 and the word test1 appears in
doc1.docx, doc2.docx, and doc3.docx, then I would like the results to
be doc1.docx, doc2.docx, and doc3.docx. The search itself is working
if I search for doc1, I get doc1.docx returned.
Please let me know what I should look at.

Link to "New Document" in SharePoint Form Library
Hello All,
Simple question:
How can I link to the "New Document" action in a SharePoint form

I just want to know the syntax of the link that will open InfoPath for

For instance:

where http://mysite/MyFormLibrary/Forms/AllItems.aspx opens the form
library itself.

Issues with directory management services after installing
After installing the July Infrastructure Updates for MOSS, our server
has been having issues with the Directory Management Service.
We originally set up Incoming E-Mail on the MOSS server using the
SharePoint Directory Management Service for creating groups in Active
Directory. This has been working perfectly in conjunction with our
Exchange 2007 server and we've been managing group memberships through
MOSS web interface.
Unfortunately it seems the WSS Infrastructure Update has broken this
functionality. Now when approving the creation of Distribution
Groups, the group itself is created and the email address is attached,
however the users are never added to the group in Active Directory.
Adding a user to the SharePoint Group results in the following error
when the Directory Service tries to make the change in Active
Directory (see below for a log file extract) :
The Directory Management Service has reported an error which is not
recognized by Windows SharePoint Services.
No other changes have been made to the system, or to the permissions
or structure of Active Directory.
I have been able to recreate this scenario in the same network
environment using a development VM - creating Distribution Groups
works fine until the WSS Infrastructure Update is loaded.
Anyone else experienced this problem?

New solution for Microsoft SharePoint usage statistic and reporting:
MAPILab Statistics for SharePoint is a simple and effective tool for
collecting and analyzing data about usage of site collections of the
SharePoint product group.
With the help of the solution's reports you will be able get detailed
information about dynamics and intensity of visiting site pages,
length of user visits on different sites, depth of visits, information
about operating systems and browsers utilized by users, popularity of
site pages, start and end of visits on pages and visit sources,
intensity of queries by day, data about successful and no-result
queries and other essential information.
Due to integration with Active Directory, any report may be generated
just for users of a concrete domain, for organizational unit or even
for specific user. For example, it is possible to evaluate employee`s
involvement in projects according to dynamics of user`s visits and
queries to the search system.
The current version of the program has over 20 reports which enable
you to get detailed information about portals based on Microsoft
SharePoint.
MAPILab Statistics for SharePoint is FREE for commercial and non-

Companyweb Helpdesk from SBS 2003 to Windows 2003 Standard
We had a massive failure of our production 2003 Small Business Server
and I decided to change out infrastructure to multiple Windows 2003
domain controllers for greater resiliance and redundancy.
The problem I have is that I do not know how to get the helpdesk we
had on Companyweb on the old SBS server onto our Sharepoint
installation on our new Windows 2003 server. We have hundreds of calls
logged and no way of accessing them.
All the files are iintact on the old hard drive ie inetpub directory
etc.
Does anyone know how I can create the same Helpdesk companyweb on my
new server and merge the old data?
Any help is greatly appreciated - I am nearing the end of my tether.
Regards,
David Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67666

Hidden Files in SharePoint Folder
Hi,
I have been having a problem with a specific folder on my SharePoint
server. People who have only read access to the folder cannot see any
files in that folder but they can see the general folder structure.
As soon as I add them as a user with read/write access they can see
the files in the folder. Has anyone had a similar issue? and how
would i go about resolving it?
Thanks,

put_document and a column name "subject"
For a while now, we've been using the RPC call put_document to upload files
and various columns with meta-info. Everything works fine, but for some
reason we cannot seem to upload information to any column with the name
"subject".
Part of the request:
... snip ... Subject;SR|Schema+voor+de+komende+dagen ... snip ...
Part of the response
... snip ...
<li>Subject
<li>SW|
... snip ...
Again, all other columns work fine, encoding works fine, etc. Any suggestion
what could be wrong? Is subject a reserved name? Any workarounds? Is this
documented anywhere? Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67655
How to add webparts to a customized Login page in a sharepoint site
Hi,
I want to customize the login page of a sharepoint site with form
based authetication.
Right now the login page of sharepoint uses default asp:login control
for logging into sharepoint site. i want to customize that page with
additional functionlity of webpartzone in it where i can place
webparts.
But the login page doesn't allow me to do it as it is inherited from
namespace Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.LoginPage.
How can i customize this page so that it will allow me to add
webpartzone so that i can place my webparts in it.
Thanks

Remote Access to SBS companyweb
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage!
After installing windows SBS, setting up OWA etc. the companyweb did not
work, I uninstalled & re-installed the IIS components & the companyweb came
to like. However over the internet itâ??s possible to arrive @ the Welcome page
& from there we can sign into the Remote Web Workplace, but itâ??s not possible
to view the companyweb. I found an article (KB838429) & followed the
instructions; no joy! The workaround failed, I return everthing to it's
orininal state so as to start again. We have another domain set up on SBS &
remote access to the companyweb is working fine, I have checked all the
settings (that I can think of) & they are all seam to be the same on both
domains, can anyone help me sort this out please? Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67650
Web site pages?
Hello:
We have a client that uses a financial application called Microsoft Dynamics
GP 10.0 that integrates with a Sharepoint-based piece called Business Portal.
Since it cannot be done in Business Portal and since the client is not on
Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server, we need to develop a web part or page in
Sharepoint where the customer's web site is pulled from the accounting
application and displayed as a URL that is "clickable" in Sharepoint/Business
Portal. Ideally, too, it would be good to have a "Map" feature similar where
you can link directly to map
software so the address plugs in directly and you can pull up directions to
the customer site.
Any thoughts on developing this in Sharepoint?

WSS FAQ additions and changes - 3rd - 9th August 2008
Special Note: The next issue of this will be on the 31st of August.
Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS /
Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can't guarantee that they still are.
(This is also posted to my blog at http://mikewalsh.bilsimser.com)
(This is also posted to the WSS newsgroup at
microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - web access via
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sharepoint.mspx)
(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new
items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com
daily.)
From 3rd - 9th August 2008
NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are now not amending the date
of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change
(so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than
important as important text changes ought to result in a major version
change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future
not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version
change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major
version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB
articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

How do you change the e-mail address of an email enabled list?
I am trying to change the e-mail address of a list, but when I try to
do so (through "Incoming e-Mail Settings" on the Document Library
Settings page), it just gives me an error ("Error in the
application"). In the fine tradition of MS error-message-speak, it's
one of the best.
Some details:
- I am trying to reuse an address that had previously been assigned to
another list.
- I removed the contact that had been created in AD/Exchange 2007 for
the list that previously owned the e-mail address
- I have searched through AD and the address does not exist (both
through dsa.msc and by dumping all e-mail addresses using LDIF)
- I checked the tables in the Sharepoint database and I only see
"valid" e-mail addresses.
I think it is choking on the re-assignment because it "sees" the
address somewhere else, but I'm buggered if I can find it.
Anyone have any ideas or work arounds?
Thanks.... Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67636
WSS 3.0 sends new subscription alert, but no further alerts
wss 3.0; windows server 2003 farm (1 web front end, 1 database backend)
i'm sure this issue is not SMTP. i have several other applications using my
smtp server without problem.
the issue is that sharepoint is not generating alerts. when a user
subscribes to a list, the initial "you have successfully created an alert"
email is generated and received by the user. however, users receive no
further alerts when the list is updated, even if the subscription is set to
send the alert immediately.
this problem arose a few months ago... just after i applied SP1 to wss 3.0.
in fact, i would say it was working before SP1 and stopped working after it
was installed.
i have tried various ways to track down the problem, but i can't find an
error anywhere... so i have no clue what the problem is.
what i have tried:
1. enable smtp logging. logs show smtp never receives mail from sharepoint
(i.e. nothing happens because nothing is given to smtp from sharepoint)
2. turn up sharepoint logging... i can see where i add a new item to the
list... but never see the logging for an email being generated... and
there's no error either.
3. no errors in event viewer.
4. reboot sharepoint server. no change
5. check timer job definitions. one exists for immediate alerts, and shows
last run time that is recent.
i'm at a loss. ideas?
thanks. Tag: Displaying "Site Owner" at the bottom of every site. Tag: 67635
