I have a site with subsites - all in one site collection. I have a couple
document libraris in the master site from which I would like to link
documents in the subsites. I'd rather not use a standard URL link. Something
like the Content Query Web Editor web part might work - except it's limited
in its ability to select groups of files without tapping into metadata of
those files.

Any suggested approaches to this would be much appreciated!

Use Data View Web Parts.

Scenario: document library in the master site; amendments made there.

Sub-site: Use SPD 2007 (I presume you are using WSS 3.0 rather than WSS
2.0 where you would use FP 2003) to create a Data View Web Part using
the bove document library as source. Changes in the (master) document
library will be reflected in the sub-site's DVWP.
